Road trip to Carbonear today! The Stone Jug is perfectly situated on Water Street overlooking ... the beautiful water. The Stone Jug has so much history and character. Windows and doors wide open you feel the fresh air off the water. Couldn't ask for a more perfect way to spend the afternoon or evening with friends or family over a drink +/- food. Despite the pub fare focused menu I threw caution to the wind and ordered the vegetarian pizza and it didn't disappoint. Good size for 2 people, light, airy, yet chewy crust (?wood fire oven) and full of flavour. Paired with a Mill Street Organic Lager and you've got a great Saturday evening meal. Our waitress was fantastic! Super warm and friendly. Made us feel very welcomed and comfortable. I give The Stone Jug 4/5 stars only because they do not have many "vegetarian options" on their menu (fish & chips, salad, and veg pizza) AND the building is not easily accessible to folks with mobility challenges; there is no wheelchair ramp. read more

Great place and it always has a lot of history, I think it was around since like 1780 or something, other than that the food was also good, one thing I found neat about the place is one of the booths they had was in a jail cell from back in the day, and the waiters were very friendly. I have celiac disease and asked about gluten free options on the menu. I was told I could have a gluten-free bun with my burger. I asked if the soup of the day was gluten-free, the wait staff went to check and told me that it was. I ordered the soup and a gluten-free burger. When the food arrived, there was a bun alongside my soup. I asked if the bun was gluten-free. The waiter went to the kitchen to check and came back and told me it was not. They took the bun away. I was not offered a gluten-free bun. A few minutes later, I was several bites into my burger when the waiter returned to tell me there had been a mistake, and the burger bun was not gluten-free. They took the burger away. I was not offered a replacement burger. The manager came to our table to apologize for the error. I explained that this would make me very ill, within about an hour. A few moments later she returned with the chef, who also apologized. They told me took my information and told me they would go over what happened with their staff to make sure it didn't happen again. They took my phone number and said they would call me to check on me the following day, and the day after that. They never called. This is serious. Eating gluten not only makes people with celiac disease very sick. It also causes permanent intestinal damage. read more

My sister, mother, and I decided to take a small road trip out of town to visit Carbonear during the holidays to try out this respected pub-style restaurant. The interior is beautiful, especially considering it is a restored building in a not-highly populated region of the Avalon Peninsula. The service was quite slow, but there was a lot of time to wander around the upstairs areas and check out their nice washrooms :) I ordered the Lamb Burger ($17) which was an Newfoundland-raised lamb with feta, arugula, onion, and red pepper. The toppings and bread of the burger were alright, but the burger itself was pretty darn tasty. The dish came with cajun-spiced potato wedges as well, but they did arrive quite cold, as the time to be served took a while. I want to give this place a 3/5, but considering the surrounding competition and sheer beauty of the interior, I'll bump it up to a weak four. Very yummy food. The garlic parm fries were delicious and the pizzas were well made and arrived in good time. The staff was friendly but not too attentive. The real treat though was the beauty of the place and all the old photos on the wall; personally I think they should take the tvs down. Didn't get to try the food, waited an hour for a spinach dip with no drinks for 45 minutes even after asking for just water. Tables next to us got food and drinks even after being seated after us. Server paid no attention and when asked about the spinach dip, only went and talked to her friends at another table. If you're looking for service probably wouldn't go here. But the inside was beautiful to look at because we had nothing else to do but look around. read more

We had reservations for 6pm on a Saturday and we were seated upstairs at a window table, all as requested. While the order for beverages arrived quickly, our food was not served until after more than two hours of waiting! No apology or explanation was offered. We both had the baked Newfoundland cod and it was delicious, as was the side of coleslaw. Bottom line, the kitchen and serving staff need to be expanded to handle the suppertime rush. If you do not have two hours to spend waiting for your food, patrons should either arrive at 5pm for an early meal, or make reservations for 8:30 or later. read more

They accommodated our earlier-than-planned arrival, which we appreciated. Our server was very friendly and efficient. The food, unfortunately, was an entirely different story. We were very hungry. You know when you have a big appetite almost anything will taste good? The truffle chicken pizza was utterly tasteless, greasy and with far too much dough. The dough was soft and chewy, apparently undercooked. There was way too much cheese, and I counted nine tiny pieces of chicken which were of the chicken nugget consistency - rubbery, fatty, flavourless. Overall, it was just terribly greasy. I couldn't get through more than half. So I had a quarter of my partner's hamburger. Better flavour than my pizza, but only by a little. It's hard to make a pizza and burger bland, but on this count, The Stone Jug is successful. read more

We've been here before and the food is fantastic. However as we were coming from out of town and we were going to be 10 minutes late we requested that they would hold a table for us and the server said that they would do so. When we got there our table was gone. Furthermore, the waiter was very rude to us when we told them our table was supposed to there for us. She told us we could stay or we could go and it was up to us and she was very sassy with us. Don't know when I'll be back. Again I've had a meal here before and the food is wonderful. Stopped in on a Sunday and enjoyed the amazing brunch offerings, cod cakes and Salmon Benedict. Delicious!! Michele and Janet were SO friendly, suggested sights for us to visit, gave us information and phone numbers to make certain we enjoyed our tour of Newfoundland. The food was excellent, the building spectacular and amazingly clean. If you ever find yourself in Carbonear, NL you should stop for a meal and a beer. P. S. We were seated upstairs. The area looked good and the bathrooms were pristine. There was hope after all. We ordered drinks, which took a while to arrive and then we noticed there was a band, we were a little excited because we are all big music lovers. Nope...they were doing a sound check, a very annoying sound check that lasted the entire time we were there. We ordered appetizers, that took forever to arrive. I will say this though, the Seafood Chowder was amazing, not that we could tell anyone though, because waitresses were not to be seen. After waiting over an hour for our main meal, with drums blaring in our ears, we decided to leave. We told the waitress our situation, paid for our drinks and appetizers, and left. We ended up going to Ches's in Carbonear, (by the way we live in the east-end of St. John's. There is another Chess's restaurant about a five minute walk from our house). Feeling very dissatisfied my wife sent an email to the manager of the restaurant. We went there in early August and it is now Oct. 18th. Nothing...not a word. I did hear back from a staff member who said that the manager did receive my email and was going to get back to my wife. Lol! When? She also said, I am very sorry for your bad experience, this is not what we want to happen. She didn't want it to happen! Really! How nice of her. All I can say is save your money and head to Chafes Landing in Petty Harbour. I have never tasted fish like this in my entire life. I jokingly said to the waitress, The fish must have been caught this morning. She said, as a matter of fact, it was. The owner catches fresh fish for the restaurant every day. I don't know who the owner is, but he gets my respect. Obviously someone who cares about customer satisfaction, unlike the owners of the Stone Jug. read more

Two stars!!! NO WAY!!! Should be 5 Stars for building alone. Not to mention food!!!! Really, I mean it. What a restaurant. No faux stone in this one. It's the real deal, and make sure you walk right to the top and check out truss beams. The real thing!!!! Food and service, I have been fortunate enough to have eaten at some high class restaurants and this one is all and more. Good quality ingredients, taste is as good as best in St John's. And IMO rivals Manhattan's finest. Will definitely spread the word. A true JEM. And I haven't even mention staff, small town friendly, yet sophisticated. Over priced and paying for decor not the food. We went there yesterday at 2:49 after a lovely drive from St. John's. We entered and were told when it is hot (76 f) (24 c) they close the kitchen between 3-5 pm. I was tempted to rate this place a 1-star but gave it the extra star for the actual architecture of the building itself. In a word; Rats! Or, according to the staff who were outside discussing whether they trapped mice or baby rats was all I needed to hear and immediately walk away. Unfortunately, the group I was supposed to dine with were already inside eating and I didn't want to make a scene. Once I met them back at the office, none had anything good to say. From frozen and cold fish to dry chicken and an over-priced bill was enough for them to vow never to return. There's also a lot of whispering going on about how the basement is covered in mold and damp while the upstairs floor joists were originally replaced or removed without proper authority thus making it unsafe to patrons. Again, that's pure hear-say but from what I could gather, it may have a ring of truth to it. It's a shame really because the area needs a nice restaurant and this should've been the perfect place to cater to those who don't want standard truck stop fare. The owners missed the mark by a long shot! Jacking up prices because you have a beautiful building does not make for a good restaurant experience. FOOD and great FOOD at a reasonable price, even if a tad more expensive is fine, just don't try to screw people and make it sound like you're doing them a favour! I will never step foot in there especially when I know for a fact MOST of the food isn't even fresh let alone local. Tsk, Tsk. Pity really. Building is incredible! Years from now it will be a landmark treasure of the province! The food (I had steak) was delicious and cooked to perfection. The live music was lively and added to the atmosphere. The menu is a little pricey but understandable considering the quality of the place from top to province. I will be back very soon. read more

Arrived with high expectations, having heard a lot about the restoration of the property. We were seated at the bar, and over the 2+ hours that we spent there, overheard multiple conversations between bar staff about their uncertainty in terms of what they were doing/how to make espresso/cappuccino/etc., and then watched them fumble with what is likely an expensive and beautiful machine until they incorrectly and poorly made beverages for a table of customers. It took numerous attempts to get the staff's attention for service/more drinks. While there, the main room of the bottom floor filled with a significant amount of smoke and was hazy for quite some time. Was unimpressed with the menu as well - seems that a lot thought, money, effort, and time was put into the renovation and restoration (Well worth the visit for the architecture alone!), but little to no thought and/or expertise has been put into the food side of the business. A real shame, as the place has real potential, but will not be able to compete with other businesses given its lack lustre, truck stop-y menu. read more

Our first visit to The Stone Jug in Carbonear last night - fabulous ribeye and steamed mussels. Looking forward to returning and sampling the other options on the menu ! Overall impression: This restaurant was very chaotic, no real sense of organization among the staff. Very slow service. While my wife and I were in the area on motorcycle we decided to stop into the Stone Jug for some lunch. We were looking for something light to eat and be on our way. When we arrived we were seated immediately as there were just two of us. We placed our order of two sandwiches. Not very complicated one would think. My wife had a cup of tea and I had a glass of water. She finished her tea, and after some time the server asked if she would like a top up of hot water. It took approximately 20 minutes for this to arrive. After 40 minutes from placing our order of two sandwiches we inquired and were told that our food would be ready soon. During the next 20 minutes we were told numerous times that our order was next up, was being made and then finally that our order was being placed on plates and would be out in 2 minutes. After waiting 1 hour for two sandwiches we were ready to leave at this point and go somewhere else, but figured let's see what happens, it was only another 2 minutes right? We gave it another 10 minutes and our food still hadn't arrived. We paid for the tea and left the restaurant after wasting an hour and half of our time. I will never recommend this restaurant when given the opportunity. Such a shame given the beautiful atmosphere, but unfortunately the quality of service isn't there. read more

My wife and I along with our daughter and her husband ate at The Stone Jug on Sunday, August 14th. Our first impression was now beautiful the building was. We were assigned a table in a reasonable amount of time and our server took our drink order. When the drinks came, 2 of the beer were at room temperature. The server took our food order and we sipped our beer until they were gone. We sat back and chatted for some considerable time, still no food. We inquired and was told we should have it in a minute or two. Some 10 to 15 minutes later our food finally arrived. We didn't think to note the time when we placed our order, so our best guess we waited a minimum of 50 minutes for our food. The meal itself was good, but not unlike what is available at a number of other bar and grill type restaurants. While waiting for our food, I had ample time to observe the kitchen and serving staff. It looked totally disorganized. A lot of running around with nobody in charge. When we arrived we were so impressed with the ambiance, we fully expected a pleasurable dining experience. I wish I could say more about this place. We arrived at 1:30 for lunch. There were no seats available so we were told it would be a 5 minute wait. After 15 minutes we noticed seats began to open up, however, the waitresses (who all seemed to be running around in a chaotic fashion) took another 5 minutes to even clean the tables and after another 10 minutes realized they hadn't seated us yet. My fiancé went to the bar while we waited to get a seat and could not even get a drink. When he ordered a beer the server told him the keg was empty and needed to be refilled. He told her to give him whatever they had on tap and she walked away without giving him anything. We were finally seated and it took another 20 minutes for someone to come ask us about drinks. Our server was friendly but seemed like she had no idea what she was doing. I initially tried to order a latte and was told the "one person who knows how to use the machine has disappeared," I then ordered a Moscow mule as the sign on the front said they had them on special, the server looked at me confused and I had to tell her that it was on the sign (seriously how do your servers NOT know what's on special??), my in laws orders drinks and my fiancé ordered a beer. After another 30 minutes, my drink as well as my in laws drink arrived but my fiancé was told for the second time the beer he ordered was not on tap. He ordered a water instead (he never did get that water though). At this point we had been there for more than an hour and could tell that food was not going to be arriving anytime soon, we decided to ask how long it would take to get our food, she responded with a long story about how there is a new cool in the kitchen that doesn't quite know what they are doing (in my opinion no one there knew what they were doing). We ended up leaving after paying over $30 for a few drinks and shitty service. The waitress kept saying they were very busy and they couldn't manage but with only 13 tables and about 5 servers it seems unlikely that well trained servers could not manage, clearly this is a management issues as well as a staff training issue. Don't waste your time going here, they need to figure out how to run a restaurant. We ended up going to Mary Browns, which says a lot about this restaurant. The Stone Jug has the potential to be a 5 star. Yet there is a lot of tweaking to be done. The staff (waiters) are ill inform. I am a lover of tattoos but in this environment, their tattoos should be covered. Waiters are lost with who sits where. A lot of unnecessary pacing back & forth(staff). Staff gathering in the Connor makes you feel uncomfortable. Bad as fongs with their waiters ironing table cloths while you eat. The live music (main floor) is over powering and we are on the 2nd floor. I felt some one was going to jump on the table and to river dance for us. When the main door down stairs opens,Cold air was creeping up the stairwell. Cant imagine what it would be like eating down on the main. The menu was slim pickings. Side dishes consist of potatoes potatoes potatoes few veggies, brown rice. Our Meal was serve quick. The knifes they have are for lumberjacks. It was hard to use. Their was no desert menu, They recited it to you and stood there. I had to ask if she give us a moment. I asked if they had or thought of having a cheesecake. Reply" we have food made from scratch, not frozen" I said to myself I make bake Apple cheesecake from scratch, it's not rocket science. A lot of hard work & a labour of love Into the building. But they need a lot of working into the food service. I hope in time (cause it's only open a month ) will be improvements. Would I go back? In time but in later date.
