Cambridge market and Cafe has intensified my craving for Brussels sprouts. If you like your…read morebrussels sprouts firm like little hard al dente balls of cabbage, then these won't be for you. These are cooked until they are very soft, mushy and so full of seasonings and flavorful that I think a small child would like them. Hence, my review is not just about Brussels sprouts. Although Cambridge Market has had to increase their prices in the last few years, they are still competitive. One of my favorite things to get is the four veggie plate; however, I had never ordered them to go before. Today's order prompted me to take a few minutes and write a review. You get your choice of four veggies or salads along with your choice of roll or cornbread (which I opt out on). The portions, -- especially when compared to fast food restaurants such as Popeye's mashed potatoes where you get maybe 4 tablespoons of instant potatoes with 2 tablespoons of gravy on them -- are profoundly different. Cambridge Market has real mashed potatoes and yummy gravy. (I am not completely adverse to instant potatoes, but I am adverse to paying for a restaurant side dish that has a quality and portion of a frozen TV dinner.) Cambridge market knows what they are doing for sure with my four favorites: Brussels sprouts, lima beans, mashed potatoes and gravy, and their crisply-sweet broccoli salad. Another menu item -- my friend's favorite-- Is their Manhattan style roast beef on bread with mashed potatoes in the middle. I was pleased that the young lady who took my order was polite on the phone (and in person), I was pleased that I was not charged for an accompanying glass of ice water, and I was pleased that my order had the required utensils and napkins in the bag. My total was $10.60 for all. My picture may be in here sideways, but I'm not going to risk losing the novel. I just wrote.

Harvest - You can't beat that sammich for under $5!

I visited the Harvest after a long day of working outside in below freezing weather. That is to say…read morewe were all tired and hungry and looking forward to a sandwich place that a local highly recommended to us. We went around 4pm and there were a few people in the shop. I'm not 100% sure what to call this place... a restaurant? Grocery? Butcher? It certainly fits all of those to an extent. There is a small deli in the back where they make sandwiches to order. I was disappointed to see they use plain bread from a grocery store, but they do have white and wheat options which helped. There's quite a bit of meat to choose from and put on your sandwich. I got the mesquite turkey and thought it was excellent. I do wish I had combined it with another meat though, to bulk up the sandwich and add some flavor (though the amount of meat I was given was generous- not a skimpy Subway level of meat). The lettuce she put on the sandwich tasted a little old. They don't have much in the way of toppings; there was lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, mayo, mustard, salad dressing (a southern sandwich topper, not actual salad dressing), and I think that was about it. The sandwiches are simple and I expected to still be hungry after eating it but soon realized it was the perfect size. Plus, it only cost $2.40! An excellent deal for a good homemade sandwich. They price the sandwiches by weight so if you get more meat it will be a little bit more. The grocery area has lots of necessities- fresh produce, locally made canned goods, some dairy products, and a lot of meat. Their prices on meat were exceptional and while they didn't have a lot to choose from, they did have quite a bit and it all looked to be high quality. There are also snacks available there like chips, cookies, moon pies, and a variety of sodas and bottled drinks. A few things to note: they didn't appear to have a bathroom for guests and if they did it was likely through and office or kitchen and not easily accessible. Not a huge deal but I do prefer a more accessible bathroom that doesn't require specifically asking for it and having to be led to it. There is no indoor seating. There is outdoor seating that looks nice but when we went it was below freezing and not ideal. Everyone working there was very friendly and happy to chat or help us decide what to get on our sandwiches. On the outside, The Harvest really looks like a hole in the wall but don't let that scare you off! It's a nice stop for a classic sandwich and snack that won't hurt your budget and is a much more local experience than Subway would be.

I've been sourcing nearly all of my meat from The Harvest for a couple of years now. They simply can't be beat. It's a small joint where you'll feel like family. The service is second to none.
