We chose this restaurant as it was recommended and we were craving Asian towards the end of our NZ…read moretrip. It seems promising as the waiter attending to us was Korean. However, they weren't particularly friendly, and seemed curt at times. But the restaurant is very spacious and great for groups. Banchan in comparison to what I am used to is sorely lacking. The dishes we ordered were not bad, but I have had better versions in other Korean restaurants, even all the way in Lake Tekapo. Another thing I found a bit surprising was this restaurant serving both Japanese and Korean cuisine when the two are quite distinctively different. We did not try any Japanese food though so this review is based solely on the Korean dishes we had.

First off, it seems like a happening place because it's open 24 hours and they allow you to BYO drinks so everyone was walking in with bottles of beer and wine! I noticed that all the wait staff was Korean so perhaps my expectations were a bit high. We ordered the lamb BBQ (since this is something I've never had at a Korean restaurant), the soon tofu soup, and the beef wraps. The lamb BBQ was the best thing we had, it had pretty good flavor. Unfortunately, the soon tofu soup was a disappointment, it was spicy but watery at the same time. Beef wraps were essentially bulgogi wrapped in rice paper. The banchan (side dishes) were a bit lackluster. I was glad to try a Korean restaurant in New Zealand, but unfortunately, my mum's Korean cooking is better. :)

But if we're talking best it wasn't quite there. It's a smallish place but still has about 8 - 10 tables. Dark interior. My favorite part of the decor was the trip advisor awards they had all over their restaurant walls. There were I think 4. And they only had a 4.2, so they really were proud of that low 4. And I love that they maybe thought that would be the deciding factor for someone to eat there. "Well I'm not sure if I want anything but I'm already here in the restaurant. man... That 4.2 on trip advisor really sold me. I'll stay!" Ok anyways.. Chicken was pretty good. A bit dry. They put sauces on top so the chicken soaks it up if you don't eat quick. But a nice addition. You can choose from like 8 flavors. Photo will be listed. I tried Sweet Chili. Just enough kick to make it taste good. They also have a chili bang bang flavor which is about as hot as you wound expect. Sampled it and I felt like I was shot in the mouth. Pun intended. $18nzd for a portion. The portion size is really big too, enough for 2 people easily. They serve alcohol too fyi. Something about fried chicken and beer drives Koreans crazy. I dig it too. Next time I think I'll carry out. And try a new flavor. But I'm no hurry.

The sauces were basically the same except one had pickled ginger the other had garlic chips and cloves. This restaurant really needs to learn how to fry chicken so that it is crispy! The salad dressing was tasty but they put so much on there it was over whelming!
