This is another one of those pubs that I have visited twice, and the only reason I came here a…read moresecond time was simply for my Yelp review - and it is something that I seriously regret. Actually, that second time I realised that there was a little more to this pub than simply a pokies room and a restaurant because I walked out the back and discovered a sports bar, and a beer garden. Mind you, neither the sports bar, or the beer garden, really made me change my mind about this place. Okay, the beer garden was nice, but then again it seemed as if the owner simply threw some tables into the back yard and called it a beer garden. Oh, don't let the name fool you, it is a pub, albeit a pretty shocking one.

A traditional Aussie club, the club is also where I often join my Dad and older brothers for a hearty pub lunch midweek where we can enjoy a game of pool, my brother can have a punt and the boys can escape the factory for an hour or so. Serving traditional pub fare, you can expect to find soups, steak, salt and pepper squid, burgers and parmas, each for under $20. All the meals our clan has sampled have been tasty and definitely provides bang for your buck (typical huge pub portions). A small, but quite nice, beer garden is available to patrons if you choose to sit outside, however the interior is nothing to rave about - very traditional, quite outdated furnishings that is bizarrely contrasted with a huge plasma TV screen in the back eating area. When visiting with my baby niece, the only high chair available was disgustingly filthy. Overall, more suited to tradies or local workmen wanting a quick counter meal or those who like to have a bet in their spare time.

Set with free to air and Foxtel sport channels it kept the kids happy (child and hubby). We ordered the ribs that were on a 1/2 price special and they were amazing, and as we each ordered different sauces it led to a friendly argument about who's was better. We followed that up with the dessert platter which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The service couldn't be faulted, food came out in good time, drinks were served immediately after ordering, and staff were constantly making sure we were happy and not in need of anything. We have since returned twice and become members in order to make good use of their happy hour while dining (jar cocktails are $8.90 for members, $12.90 full price) the ribs special is a regular Monday thing and they have other specials throughout the week eg steak night, Parma night, burger night, $1 ribs ect. Value for money is pretty reasonable, but fantastic if you take up the specials on offer. For 3 servings of 1/2 priced ribs, a dessert platter, a jug of cider, a soft drink and ice cream spider it cost us $90

PJ O'Brien's Irish Pub was a short walk from our Southbank Hotel in Melbourne and after a long tour…read moreday, we were ready for a nice meal in a convenient location. Another couple had been there a few days before and raved about it, so off we went. Although we were seated relatively quickly, ordering was slow, and delivery from the kitchen even more so. OK, the drinks came quickly, although I was served a Heineken (Lager), when I clearly ordered a Kilkenny (Irish Red Ale). That's kind of embarrassing for an Irish Pub to mix up those 2 very different beers. The wait for our dinner so long that a couple just finishing up at the next table offered to try to find our waitress who had disappeared. We found her later at the bar with a friend, probably just off work, and with a poor handoff. Someone else eventually delivered our meals, which was pretty good, particularly Gayle's Chicken Parma. My issue was that half of my Mussels were "welded shut", despite my messy attempts. After several minutes of trying to find someone, I basically told that flustered person to take the plate away because I was done with this place. To the restaurant's credit, they took the Mussels off the tab with a half- hearted apology at the cash register, not our table. A much need snack at the local 7-11 finished off my evening meal. Let's just call it a bad night from a franchise Irish Pub that failed these customers.

The service is excellent. The waiting staff are polite, informative and do everything they can to make your experience pleasant. The food is beautiful. I normally grab either a chicken schnitzel or the roast of the day, and they are always really well presented and taste wonderful. A bit on the expensive side (with mains starting at $23.50), but it's a great place to go with family for special occasions. Make sure you book in advance. Everyone is so friendly, and because a lot of the people who come here are members of the RSL, you see the same familiar faces time and time again so it feels like a tight-knit little community all on its own. As a member, you get really good discounts on drinks at the bar plus other special offers in the restaurant like a free meal in the restaurant on your birthday. There's also a coffee/tea/hot chocolate machine and a biscuit jar that you can help yourself to for free. This is right next to the pokies machines so it must be to help keep everyone's sugar levels up whilst they're gambling their savings away. Apparently they put on quite a New Year's Eve event here as well. Good times. I just think this place is cool for taking care of my folks and making them happy.

I have to admit that I am somewhat impressed with their evolution over time, namely in regards to the beers that are available, and the fact that they have raised the concept of a sports bar to a new level, namely that they feel much better to sit down with a drink, and a lot less sleazy, that others. Of course, one of the main things that sets them apart is the fact that they pretty much has no pokies.

The fitout of this sports bar didn't do a lot for me. A bit grey and dull, I reckon. The scotches on offer were a bit pedestrian. I chose a Glenfiddich which was ok but as always no standout performer. Service was just ok here without any real warmth or human interest. I actually prefer the pokies pub up the road - and I momentarily forget its name - despite the fact that I detest pokies. The atmosphere is better there. The staff have been lovely there when I've visited. Tim E's review encourages me to discount thoughts of ever eating at the Sporting Club. In the end the only thing I really liked was the name of the place although a person I trust likes this place. Such is life. PS - I later remembered the name of the pub up the road. It's called The Vine. The front bar is called The Vineyard. In all of Melbourne there's not a place that looks less like a vineyard.

Are you being dragged to a movie you know isn't going to be any good without at least a couple of drinks in you? This is your place. It's just across from the cinemas, so it's got a pretty decent location. The bar staff are pretty friendly, and you rarely have to wait long to get a drink. There is plenty of seating to sit down and have a quiet one with a few mates. There's plenty of pokies too, if that's your thing. I won $20 a few weeks ago there. The décor is pretty normal suburban pub style. In a nutshell, it's pretty relaxed, comfortable, convenient if you're going to the cinema, and most importantly, the beer is cold.

At that sort of time, it's quite surreal. The bar looks and feels as if it's open at 5pm on a Wednesday afternoon, yet it's getting to the wee hours. Very strange. I would have described it as a sports bar. Perhaps this is because I've never actually been in one, so seeing a large number of men all camped inside watching the soccer at 1am on a Monday morning is a pretty good indicator to me. It gets definite props for being open at said time. I like to run away from my house and go on late night adventures, and unfortunately my only option for food/drink at that time of night is McDonalds. Nice to know there is somewhere I can go for a quiet sit down chat and a cup of tea/cider if I'm awake. I don't think the staff are especially cluey (but then again, I'm spoilt by city bars). The decor reminds me of an airport waiting lounge and there's a huge emphasis on the gambling. It's still a nice place to pop in to, though, and to forget the world outside for a little while.
