Extremely disappointing and a negative experience! A spa that offers services that are below two stars at five-star pricing!! My boyfriend offered me a "spa day" upon my arrival in C'ville at the Boar's Head Resort where he is a current member. Starting off slowly I decided on a pedicure and a facial with pore extraction. I informed the scheduler of my allergies to alpha-hydroxy acids and formulations with vitamin C. She promised to inform the facialist and asked me to reiterate my concerns upon arrival the next day which I did. I was direct. The facialist claimed she was not informed and since I relied on the scheduler and didn't complete the information reguarding my allergies we would have to go over the ingredients. She asked my opinion of ingredients which primarily is something she should know as a facialist. We changed facials and she informed the receptionist that the facial I was going to get would be more expensive. She later apologized and fessed up that she actually did get the memo about my allergies but just had forgotten. After various products were applied and some promptly removed due to tingling on my face, she finally applied the exfoliation mask. When asked when pore extraction would be she informed me that this facial had no pore extraction. Prior she knew that is what I wanted and she claimed to be skilled in this and promised to make my face feel clean. We even discussed not to go near the sensitive eye area with extraction. She opted to speak to the spa manager to see what could be done. She later would inform the spa manager that I was unaware of the distinction between exfoliation and extractions which was covering up her mistake. Did I mention I was a global fashion model for fifeteen years and have had these type of facials monthly during and after my career to maintain good skin quaility! Afterwards, I enjoyed my pedicurist, but was horrified to see that the spa lacked basin liners and an ultraviolet light to dry one's toes. At $85.00 plus 22% gratuity tacked on, I found this to be absurd! The purple powder and the chemical pellet they tossed in the water caused a reaction, so we had to restart the process. Later, arriving home, I realized my heels were rough as the pumice was not applied well enough to create smoothness. I finally spoke to Donna, the spa manager, who expressed no regret for the unprofessional facial scenario and the mistruth about the extraction process the facialist told her. She offered me a 10% discount. She handled this matter poorly, as she later tried to tell me the facialist hadn't known of my allergies and tried to blame me. I explained she did but fessed up she forgot she had been told and lost precious time during the facial process. Later when home, shortly thereafter, I called to explain to her that my face was red and burning and she asked if I had gone in the sun. Again, the blame game! My partner tried phoning her to explain the disappointment several times and to fix the billing. He couldn't reach her. Subsequently, she eventually gave a 10% discount down the road with no follow-up apologies as he mentioned the bad experience in a voicemail he left. I too am currently a member of the Boar's Head Resort and Fitness Center but will not return to the spa since it is beyond disappointing. read more

Had an incredible experience yesterday at Boar's Head. Was welcomed at the front desk and given a quick tour of the locker room and lounge. In the locker I received a robe and slippers and felt that my belongings were safe and secure. Had time for a shower before waiting in the lounge with a complimentary cup of tea. My massage therapist, Mia, greeted me warmly and took me to my room. She allowed me to choose a scent for my aromatherapy massage. Mia used a combination of heat, pressure, oil, soft touch, harder pressure, and soothing motions to relax my entire body. After the massage I was free to stay in the lounge to enjoy snacks, water and tea, and then I followed it up with a long stay in the steam room located in the locker area. Overpriced and not overly relaxing. Was given a gift certificate for a massage and scrub. The spa facilities feel very clinical. The "lounge" is not that peaceful-bright lights, white walls, gives off a hotel lobby feel. Rooms were the same-white and clinical. I'm used to spas being dark and relaxing-not here. Also, the music kept cutting out which is a minor quibble but it is distracting when it happens multiple times a session. My scrub and massage were ok-definitely not great and definitely not worth the exorbitant prices they charge. I've had better experiences at massage chain shops and pay WAY less. Also had an issue with billing at the end (they tried to charge me $200 over my gift card). Thankfully that was resolved but the manager made a fuss even though the error was on their part. Poor customer service on their part in my opinion. Save your money and go elsewhere-you're just paying more because it's at Boars Head. read more

Finally had a chance to go to the spa after it reopened and let me tell you, it was amazing! We went for a couples massage and it did not disappoint. After checking in, they led us to our separate locker rooms where we were given big fluffy robes and some spa slippers to change into. We were then led to the very relaxing atmosphere coed lounge to wait. Here, they had water and tea and some snacks. Next, time for the massage. Our masseuses were super caring and asked us questions before the massage to ensure what type of pressure we wanted, if they wanted us to touch our hair (to avoid getting oil in it if going out after), and so on. Overall, they were amazing. I wish I could remember their names! After, we went back to change and check out and it was done. Everyone was really nice and the products they used in the massage and sold in their entry area all were good quality. Highly recommend! read more

I really debated whether or not I wanted to write this review, but I really wish that I had checked yelp before I decided to book a customized retreat for both me and my boyfriend. I cannot overstate that I thought that the service was great. Extremely friendly and professional staff, but their actual massage was utterly disappointing. Especially for this price. Between the two of us, it came out to be about $750. I have been to day spas like this in the past and I have had numerous massages. I was really hoping that this would be a good experience for my boyfriend especially, since he had never had a massage before and he was unsure if he would enjoy it in the first place. I really wish I had taken him to somewhere I had been in the past. The spa itself was very quaint and charming. The rooms were very clean and inviting. For the customized retreat, we selected the Blue Ridge Classic, Jefferson Herbal Retreat, and Hydrating Herbal Facial. We selected the same services, and we had hoped to be massaged in the same room, but they had separated us. When I met my masseuse, she had asked me about trouble areas I was having. She acknowledged the areas, yet decided to avoid massaging the areas I had mentioned? This was also my boyfriend's experience. He had asked for his lower back to be massaged and their avoidance seemed to highlight his discomfort in this area. I can really only describe the massage as being slathered with lotion with slightly more pressure than I would apply to my own skin. She did not work out any of my multiple knots or relieve any tension in my body. The scrub was much better. However, because the scrub was applied on the massage table and there were multiple blankets used to constantly cover my body, it began to feel like I was laying in a bed with a lot of crumbs in it. Finally, the facial was probably the most disappointing. The application of the multiple lotions seemed extremely haphazard. In addition, it was supposed to include a "scalp massage" which was really just her rubbing my hair onto my scalp with the flat of her palm in circles. I have straight hair, but it knotted my hair terribly and it really didn't feel relaxing at all. It also made my hair very greasy afterwards. Okay, let's begin with the good. Won't take long. 1. The actual therapists were good. The bad: 1. My aesthetician apparently got sick 30 minutes before my facial appointment. They called and left me a voicemail and offered me an appointment 2 hours later. If I was alone I could have accommodated the change but my wife and I had massage and body scrub appointments booked so it would have thrown off the entire afternoon. They had no other solution. No manicures or anything else were available. Fine. Illnesses happen. But we've been all over the world getting massages and if there's ever been an issue (rarely happens tho) the spa has rolled out the red carpet to fix it. Not here. We had to ask for a discount on the remaining appointments! No offer of it. No offer of a discount at the restaurant. No offer of a service at another time. In fact, the girl checking me in said "the therapist got sick in her earlier appointment and THAT guest was understandable!" Umm, k. Rude. 2. The rooms were freezing 3. No sauna. Small steam room only. 4. It appeared that no one had cleaned up the tiny women's changing room in awhile. The laundry bins were overflowing, dirty showers, clogged hair dryers. No need to come here when there's other choices in town. read more

End of summer treat...I had the Jefferson Herbal Experience and my daughter had the Sacajawea Aromatherapy treatment. We were both very pleased. Spa is very clean, quiet and comfortable. Starting with the positive, it was very convenient to our room (we're staying at the hotel) and the locker rooms are beautiful. The men's room has lockers, a sauna, steam room and showers. Very clean, updated, and relaxing. My wife and I received a couples massage as a gift. Our therapists were very nice and asked us what to focus on. However, the massage was one of the least relaxing and least relaxing massages I've ever gotten. It felt rushed and my therapist never concentrated on the locations she asked about. I ended up being annoying the second half as my back started to seize up. My back felt better going in than coming out. To be fair I didn't chose the type of massage we received, but this was one of the least inspired massages I've received. When we went to pay we asked to separate the tip from the treatment cost. They were very nice about it, but it took 15 minutes and two people to figure it out. And I found out after my wife had tried to take care of it before I left but waited for 10 minutes without anyone showing up. For the price, go elsewhere. If you're staying at the hotel and like very light massages and recently sold an Internet company, also go somewhere else. read more

My husband and I were in Charlottesville for the marathon and our anniversary, and decided to go here to get couples massages, and boy was this a great idea! The staff was very courteous, and the facilities were very nice, clean, and relaxing. The resort as a whole is beautiful! The prices were very good in my opinion since I'm from the DC area, it was a lot cheaper. We got the 90 minute massages, I wish I remembered the names of our massage therapists. I got the deep tissue and my husband got the swedish massage. The therapists made sure we were really comfortable, and the music in the room was really soothing. I thoroughly enjoyed it and wouldn't mind going back for another. If you're in Charlottesville, stop by this spa! read more

While our room was large, the Boar's Head website is more than misleading, promising views of a lake and woods. In fact, there is a man-made lake but no wooded areas. Any views from our room were boring. More than that, our dining experience was horrible - steaks ordered medium-rare were burned to a crisp. I recommend avoiding the dining room. It is my impression that the Boar's Head lacks either good management and/or adequate funds (it's owned by a foundation of the University of Virginia) to update the look and feel of the resort which has a 1970s appearance about it. Air conditioning units are old and very noisy. Some carpets are threadbare. Daily room make-up is late, about 5 pm. And, bed turn-down service is as late at 9:35 pm! My advice is to not believe the Boar's Head website and look elsewhere. read more

I came here for a weekend getaway with the ladies. Of course you can't go on a weekend away with your girls without a spa treatment. I decided to get the blue ridge mountain spa (80 minutes). I thought the spa was very cozy and cute...but was not impressed with the massage. Not knocking on the massage therapist but I've really had better. Also, they added an 18% gratuity on my services and did not tell my until I was checking out. A little heads up would have been nice. I'm pretty generous and usually always leave 20% or more but the fact that they were sly about adding in the gratuity for me was not favorable to me. I'd go back to the hotel and stay but not the spa. Too overpriced for the services received. read more

I had an aromatherapy massage done on my birthday, and it was fabulous! It was my first time going to this spa and my first time getting a massage, and I will definitely go back. When I made the appointment, the receptionist was very friendly and super helpful. They invite you to come early and stay as long as you like so you can relax as much as you'd like. Booked a 50 minute deep tissue couples massage as a present for a 3 year anniversary. Firstly, when we arrived and were walking in the door, I told a woman who worked there that we were there for our couples massage. She ignored me and kept walking out the door. I then walked up to another woman behind the counter and told her the same thing and gave her my name. She then informed me that our massages were scheduled in separate rooms. I think this was the same woman I booked the massage with on the phone, who did not seem to know much at all about the prices, massages, etc. Maybe she was new.. but if so, she should have had somebody more experienced helping her. She said the only thing we could do was go on with the separate rooms or come back another day. This was not an option for us because we have very different work schedules and had to request off our anniversary together for this special massage. It threw off our entire day and left me with no gift to give for our anniversary. I felt terrible. This place is SO expensive and is supposed to be this fancy, incredible place. I would have imagined that they would have gone above and beyond to apologize for their mistake, but no. Super disappointing experience. read more

The receptionist was incredibly rude when I showed up on time and my therapist was late. I asked her how long it would be and she basically told me to sit down and wait. When the therapist finally came almost 10 minutes late she offer no apology and lead me back to the room. I had requested when I booked the appointment a certain type of lotion as I have very sensitive skin. The therapist had the wrong kind and took even more time to go change it. We live close by and are members at the sports club, so we can use the spa at a discount. It is hit or miss. They lost a very good masseuse recently, and their replacement is not up to par. Their facials are good. Their pedicures are ok. The overall service is not good-I recently had a bad experience there, was told i wouldn't be charged until I spoke with manager. I was charged the full amount. She called me back 4 days after incident, then told me she'd give me a 15% discount because I left (I was nicked by the pedicurist). I told her I'd pay half since I did receive a portion of the service. But they had no band aids or first aid cream available for me, so I left to get some-the manager complained that I had left the service, that it was my fault for leaving. Really? I wouldn't have left if you had some sort of first aid cream to alleviate the injury (which was minor, but still) and prevent an infection. The manager is new, but with the attitude she showed towards me, I don't think things will improve anytime soon. It is a lovely setting, but if you are doing a full day thing and want food brought over to you, room service does not deliver there. Makes no sense. I will not return, just not worth the hassle. read more

Several interconnected rooms that have a lovely ambiance and you can go outside and look at the lake if the weather is good. My hot stone massage was great and the steam room was a huge plus. I have been getting pedicures at the Boars Head Spa for several years with Debra. She is a true professional who strives to make you comfortable and relaxed while she is doing the pedicure. New chairs that message you while she works are the best! Hot tea with a warm pillow around your neck enhance the experience. Debra is very careful with your feet. I had a mediocre massage recently, very disappointing, and found the atmosphere dark and gloomy.

I am new to Charlottesville and needed somewhere to get my nails done for my wedding. I didn't want to trust just any old nail salon so I figured The Boar's Head would do a great job considering the price and other services they provided at the spa. The service was just ok and it's was semi-relaxing but that was the only thing that was slightly good about my experience. I got a gel manicure and spa pedicure. My pedicure chipped 3 days after I got it and my "lasting memories" manicure lasted only 4! Thankfully my nails made it through the wedding but started chipping and peeling off the day after. I wasn't doing anything crazy like cleaning with chemicals that this should have happened. I have had many many gel manicures before when I lived in Richmond and they were far better and almost 1/4 the price of this one. I wish I had just driven back and gone to my normal nail salon. They also have a very small selection of colors and brands of polish. I would NOT recommend anyone get their nails done at the BH. It is not worth the money! read more

As a dedicated client for over 10+ years for facials, manicures and pedicures, massages and waxing, this is a wonderful and very pleasant spa. It's clean, quiet and extremely accommodating. The Boarshead's spa service fees are that of a 5 star facility (actually that's not entirely true as 5 star facilities offer 120 minute messages for the price of an 80 minute message here), but the experience delivered is sub-par. I vowed to treat myself to one spa service a month this year - as a small business owner I work 70-80 hours a week and needed a treat to look forward to - my plan was to rotate facial, pedicure and message each month and a friend was joining me on the adventure. It took a number of months of trial and error to find the most competent staff members for each service. The errors included: a hot rock message with luke warm rocks, a 80 minute pedicure where the pedicurist was gone 20 for minutes, phone reminders to the wrong person (my spa buddy's mom was called twice about our apts.), general chaos at the front desk when trying to book the next appointment. My friend's mishaps included scalding hot rocks and a facialist that insisted on waxing her eyebrows - despite her protests - that resulted in burned skin. Interestingly enough, another friend was staying at the Inn on business and suffered the same burn during a facial - at least she had requested the waxing. Today, my final day as a patron, my appointment got dropped from their books and they could have cared less. As a Spa aficionado I tried to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear due to location convenience. A spa should make you feel pampered and tended to. At best, this place makes you feel like they are doing you a favor when they provide adequate service for exorbitant prices. More typically, they make you feel like an inconvenience. read more

I got a deep cleansing facial at Boar's Head, and I was really happy with my choice. Coming here is more than a treatment- it's a whole experience. I've not a spa aficinado, but I have visited spas before and Boar's Head really impressed me. There were two fancy rooms with calming tea and a babbling brook water feature, there was a posh changing room with free stuff, fluffy robe, warm slippers, the whole nine yards. My aesthetician was attentive to my sensitive skin and even massaged my shoulders and legs while the exfoliating mask was working. I left with super soft, super clean skin and the benefits of the facial last weeks. It was expensive, but honestly not much more than other facials in town, and the experience was really worth it. Plus, they give discounts and certain deals, especially on weekdays. If you're going to get facials every week or every few weeks, maybe a less expensive spa is best for you- but if you want something really special, Boar's Head is the best. read more
