She was the best tour guide that kept us safe and got us drunk! We brought our own drinks, but undershot a tad bit so Paige sold us a 6 pack before we left. We had a great time playing drinking games and pedaling around Broadway, got dropped off at one bar for a quick bathroom and shot break, and ended our tour at Ol' Smokey distillery to continue our adventure! This is an hour-long showcase…read moreof five female musicians (sometimes with a special guest or two!), and is the sole female-only singer/songwriter show in Nashville. That isn't to say you might not find yourself at a place listening to singers in the round or in the row who all happen to be women, but this is the only songwriting showcase with that explicit intention. Song Suffragettes was started to give women a place to play, and to push back against the overwhelmingly male presence in country music. There are tons of talented ladies out there with a country or Americana soul! Let me tell you, the women playing the night I was there knocked it out of the park. These aren't total unknowns or people who are doing their first live performance, either; the evening I went included a woman who just released an album, a woman who's played the Opry five times, and other incredibly talented women. One of them, Abbey Cone, has since been named a CMT Woman of Country. Several have songs on radio, have released EPs or LPs, or have been out touring. Many of them have publishing deals from one of those places you'll see on Music Row, and some of their songs you may recognize from when one of your favorite artists released it (sorry to tell you that a lot of the time your fave didn't write the song, they just have the clout to get credit as a songwriter!). Song Suffragettes broadcasts every show on YouTube (and possibly other platforms), unless there's some sort of technical glitch, and they were doing it long before the pandemic (when I saw them in July 2018 this was already old hat for them). Each performer does two songs and then they band together to close out the night with a group number from another musician. At the start of the pandemic they were doing shows from home, but have since returned to live, in-person shows. That's fantastic for me and for anyone who loves live music because it allows me to go to a concert every week if I want. They have a tip jar online so you can help them out too. They are definitely on my itinerary for the next time I'm in Nashville, and honestly id make sure to plan a trip to make sure I was there on Monday and could see them. Check them out on YT definitely, but don't pass up the chance to go to a show live when you're in town.
