While I hate to give any historic building like this a low rating I can't honestly give it more…read morethan two stars without completely lying. Is it a cool old building with some beautiful details? Sure. Is it a good venue for any show with sound? Definitely not. Is the building one giant safety hazard by modern standards? Ummm...I'll leave this one up to who ever is handing out C of O's in Asbury Park. When I saw that Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes were going to be showing their new film at this theater I scooped up two tickets for me and my husband. There wasn't much detail on the tickets besides the start time of 6pm. When we arrived around 5:30pm we were greeted to a huge line that wrapped in front of the theater and down Ocean Ave. Turns out the doors didn't open until 6pm and the show didn't start until after 7pm. We were about midway on the line and when we got to security the guy in charge of security was yelling at everyone checking bags and people to speed it up. My bag was barely checked and they didn't even use the metal detector wand on my husband. Can't even imagine that they checked anyone at all after us. We walked upstairs and decided to grab a couple of drinks and snacks. Again we were greeted to huge lines which only got worse when everyone else started coming in behind us. We walked in to go to our seats. The usher was very nice and overly concerned about telling us where not to step and to watch our step. I didn't really notice the lack of handrails until we sat down. The railings in the balcony area are definitely not adequate. They are either extremely low or non-existent. Although the rows have a decent amount of space in front of you the actual seats are very small and on top of each other. My biggest issue here is the sound. We saw a movie and people speaking on stage so it wasn't as bad as I imagine any kind of music performance would be. There was no speakers at all in the balcony area (unless they were off). The only speakers I noticed were on each side of the stage. When the movie started it sounded like we were watching a bad bootleg. The acoustics in the theater were awful. I think this could be an amazing theater once again but it needs some major work throughout to get there.

A gem not even the Broadway critic for BWW knows about…read more Long Branch is a hike from the city--90 minutes each way on New Jersey transit--but well worth it. I went to see my friend in the F Theory last night and was deeply impressed with everything about this beautiful and quite plush theater. As a reviewer mostly of off-off Broadway in New York, this theater struck me as wildly luxurious. It's more off-Broadway-like than off-off. The New Jersey Rep is celebrating 30 years in business but 20 years free and clear in the current location on, wait for it, Broadway (street or avenue). Long Branch is an old New Jersey town, relatively desolate except for a half-dozen taquerias, a dollar store, and various small businesses (like Boost Mobile). The theater has a giant parking lot behind the theater, where you enter. It story is worth looking up on the website. The theater produces ONLY new works. As such it's unique and important. I agree with Ames A: "Producing new works for the American theater is vital." This October there will be a festival of 28 or so plays to celebrate the purchase of a 30,000 square foot facility they hope to make into a theater arts center, complete with rooftop bar, two theaters, and I think classes. If you're in Essex, Monmouth, or Ocean County, become a subscriber and support American theater. And go see Megan Loughran and Alex Trow in the F Theory.

The Secret Behind the Magic of The Stone Pony is Community…read more There is something about The Stone Pony that goes beyond music. What made the venue legendary was never the walls, the bar, or even the stage lights. It was the community. In the 1970s and 1980s, Asbury Park became a kind of laboratory for musicians. Night after night, artists gathered in clubs along the Jersey Shore to play, experiment, collaborate, and refine their craft in front of real audiences. The Stone Pony became one of the central meeting points for this growing creative ecosystem. Musicians sat in with each other's bands, traded ideas, tested new songs, and sometimes performed several nights a week. Instead of guarding their talent, they shared it. Instead of competing, they elevated one another. Out of that environment emerged artists who would later become internationally known, including Bruce Springsteen, Southside Johnny, and Steven Van Zandt. They were shaped by thousands of hours playing together in small rooms filled with passionate listeners. The sound that developed in Asbury Park reflected this collaboration. It blended rock, soul, rhythm and blues, and big-band horn arrangements into what many came to call the Jersey Shore sound. Part of what made this ecosystem so special was the geography. Within just a few walkable blocks were other gathering places where musicians and fans flowed throughout the night, including Asbury Lanes, Tim McLoone's Supper Club, and the legendary Wonder Bar, all just steps from the Atlantic Ocean and the Asbury Park boardwalk. Music, ocean air, and a close-knit creative community blended together in a vibrant hub where musicians could play one venue and then wander down the block to hear another band. My curiosity about this history grew from a personal place. Over the past year my son, Chris Renner, a young guitar player who has only been playing for two years, has had the opportunity to perform rock cover songs on stages throughout Asbury Park. Chris's playing has reminded many listeners of the legendary precision and melodic passion of Randy Rhoads. His style focuses on melodic solos and phrasing influenced by classical music rather than typical head-banging metal. Because of the NJ music community, Chris has already had the opportunity to perform as lead guitarist on stages including The Stone Pony, Asbury Lanes, Tim McLoone's, Wonder Bar, and even the Ozzy Osbourne Tribute Show at the Cutting Room in Manhattan. Watching him step onto those stages sparked a deeper interest in the story behind the NJ music scene and the culture that continues to nurture musicians today. One of the most interesting aspects of the Asbury Park scene is how cover music and original music live side by side. Many bands begin by performing well-known songs while gradually introducing their own material. The cover band scene plays an important role. It allows musicians to build stage experience, connect with audiences, and become part of the local circuit. Those shared songs create a common language between bands and fans and foster a welcoming camaraderie. Something even more inspiring has been happening recently. Several of Chris's friends from the local music community have begun forming their own original bands and performing their own songs. Chris loves supporting them, showing up to their shows and cheering them on as they cheer him. This is how music scenes grow. Musicians celebrate the music that inspired them, refine their skills through live performance, collaborate with other players, and eventually discover their own voice. Even today the Stone Pony carries that legacy. Musicians still show up, plug in, and play. Fans still crowd close to the stage the way they did decades ago. Great cultural movements rarely begin in boardrooms or corporate offices. They begin in communities, in small venues, shared stages, and the willingness of people to create together. The Stone Pony and the Asbury Park music community are proof that when talent, opportunity, and collaboration come together in one place, something extraordinary can happen.
