Nice little coffee shop on Pape. They have lots of seating inside and a nice patio. The menu is small and typical of what you'd expect at a coffee shop. Some nice bites to eat and they have a bottle shop too if you want an alcoholic drink. Great service, very friendly! read more

This is a cute little cozy coffee off of Pape Avenue. The staff were sweet and very friendly. Service was prompt. I tried the Butter Pecan Iced Coffee and it was DYNAMITE. It had the perfect sweetness for me. I haven't had a butter pecan flavoured anything since I was last in the states. So I was so happy to see that on the menu. I will definitely be back here the next time I'm in the area. read more

Decided to spontaneously visit the cafe before closing to grab a sandwich for a light dinner. Called them beforehand and they confirmed that I can still order just before closing. The staff were super friendly, helping give recommendations on which panini sandwich to choose before ultimately going with The Carne. The panini especially with the caramelized onions was delicious and freshly made. The cafe was very relaxing with many local products you can purchase and had many cool art designs reflecting Toronto vibes. read more

The Shmooz - The Carne - Cafes Near Me - Toronto, Ontario

An amazing local cafe near Toronto's Greektown neighbourhood is a hidden treasure that is well-loved by the community. It is located on Pape Ave., just 4 blocks south of the Danforth and they serve incredible coffee, specialty lattes, teas, sandwiches, salads, soups, fresh baked goods and more. I had the opportunity to visit this cozy place that features a beautiful mural depicting the locality and was warmly welcomed by Andy, the owner, and the Shmooz team, who recognize customers by their names. read more

I have been walking and driving by this place for months and I've always wanted to try it. I finally got the chance today. Inside it's very cozy and very warm colours. I could definitely see you getting a coffee to stay and just reading a book there. They also had really nice looking butter croissants and a lot of different flavors of cookies. They also have vegan and gluten-free options and a lot of other things other than just coffee and tea like kombucha and juices and even soups that you can get in a bowl cup or jar to take home. I had their latte and it was very nice. Rich flavour with the perfect balance of espresso to milk. They also have a very cute tea sniffing station so that you can check out the different teas they have to make sure that you'll like them or they just have a fun experience of smelling 15 different teas. I'd like to go back and try more! read more

Cozy little coffee shop on Pape. There's really not much around here so it's great that this place exists where it does! Decent coffee, the and the almond toffee cookie is to die for. A bit small but if you come early enough you can snag a table to study or get some work done. Also try the London fog! read more

Very watered down coffee. Overpriced food. The only thing they have going for them is they are dog friendly, with a nice patio. read more

Andy and his staff do a tremendous job of making all the best coffee based drinks you can imagine, fresh sandwiches, unique entree salads, and insane cookies. They have a large patio with plenty of seating, pretty coloured umbrellas for shade, and lush hanging planters. Sitting there often feels like you are at a dead end street instead of 5 minutes to a main city subway line. read more

I found The Shmooz while on a hungry search for a good sandwich. The café is charming with wood floors and a unique design that allows you to see the staff work. It is clean with an open feel and there is a lot to look at including a few gifts for sale. The café was busy with people working on their laptops and having lunch. I sat at the bar beside the counter/kitchen and I liked the spot because I could see my sandwich being made. I had the "Soft Cure" croissant sandwich. Toppings included smoked salmon, dill cream cheese, capers and cucumbers. The croissant was more dense than flaky and the outside was crispy. I was surprised how filling it was! The café also serves panini, which sounded good and look good in pictures, but I wasn't appetized seeing them already prepared sitting in plastic wrap in the display fridge. I enjoyed my sandwich so much that I was still thinking about it a few days later and tried to make my own at home. My version wasn't as good, probably because I didn't have a fresh, baked daily croissant like they do at The Shmooz. I plan to go back to try the cheese and pear variety. Other reviews have mentioned the prices are high. They are, but the food is good quality so I think it's fair. To drink, I had the chai tea latte. It was nice, but I think I would get a plain tea in the future considering their large loose leaf selection. There is a "sniffing station" on the wall so you can make sure you choose the right tea. I did not like that my drink was served in a glass, I found it quite hot to touch. Overall, it was an enjoyable experience and I look forward to returning. read more

The Shmooz is our local, but it's also our favourite cafe in the area by far. Coffee is literally some of the best in East Toronto, delicious sandwiches, and no less important, the staff are all lovely, without exception. Try the green eggs, the chocolate and sea salt croissants or the roast beef sandwich. You won't be disappointed! read more

Open for two months, this was my first time here and it's a beautiful spot. The decor and space is warm and very inviting. I had a cappuccino and veggie panini (roasted portobello mushroom, roasted red pepper, basil pesto, goat cheese, arugula). The panini was fantastic! They buy their beans from a Quebec-based roaster who has a roaster in Toronto. They chose them for the European roast, which I find a little on the dark side, but there's no doubt that the espresso-based drinks are made with great skill and care as is the food. They serve free-run chicken, pasture raised beef and sustainable fish. The owners live a couple of blocks from their shop and took 20-months to get it open. Their care is evident. I'll be back. read more

I want this place to do so well. The owner is so nice. The coffee is pretty good too. They could pull a better espresso but the oat milk latte was good. Highly suggest checking it out but 3 stars to just be honest and say room for improvement on espressos read more

This place feels just like home but without dirty socks lying around. And yes, this is a plus. Wall art and wood furniture together create urban yet very cozy ambiance. Espresso based drinks are made the right way and by staff who must like their job, as they're always friendly and asking me about my day. They may be thinking I'm a jerk cause I never respond but it's only because I come in before work but you guys are doing great, keep it up! A very inviting neighbourhood cafe. The Schmooz's staff are so friendly, you feel like you're a regular every time you go. Their coffee is great and food is great as well. Try the croissants and the sandwiches, both categories are excellent. read more

I live up the street - my son's daycare is 2 minutes away. After passing by what seemed like a neighbourhood long-standing spot, my wife and I finally stopped in for thermosed coffee on new parent walks early last spring. Now, it's my regular spot: great coffee, croissants, other sandwiches and snacks, and a delightful team that takes mega pride in their products. It's cozy, it's comfy, and has a great side patio for warmer weather. Oh! An App for earning rewards and paying is a perk if I've forgotten my wallet. It's nice to have a go-to spot so close and with this level of quality and consistency! read more

Fantastic local cafe, great coffee, pastries and food. Staff and owner are friendly and helpful. My husband loves their roast beef / Carne sandwich and I enjoy the roast salad. Always fresh, delicious, good portion sizes and options for GF and vegan available. read more

For over 8 months I watched the old hair salon at the corner of Pape and Wroxeter be transformed; large wooden tables, huge mural, antique lamps and even coats hooks under the windows counters. When I discovered the Shmooz cafe restaurant was finally open I was first in the door. The organic coffee and a fresh baked croissants are how I start every day. Sandwiches like the carne with grass fed beef and warm gruyere have that satisfying crunch. The home made chicken soup "is to die for" and all their ingredients are fresh and organic. It's that attention to detail, eco consciousness, care and wonderful food and staff that keep us coming back. In the short time the Shmooz has been open it has already become a hub of the our community and our go to place to meet and eat. read more

They have a great variety of gluten free food. Great choice! And it's an amazing neighbourhood cafe. Check out their green eggs,no ham croissant. One of my fav. It is quite busy filled with people with coming and going. Plus, they make a great cuppa flat white. Barry the owner is not only welcoming with his partner making an excellent cuppa coffee, but they both know a lot bout coffee. Certainly a coffee enthusiast and takes pride in what his cafe serves. read more

adorable little spot right at the corner of pape and wroxeter. my boyfriend and i spent a day in the east end this past weekend and were checking out some local spots. we came across this one on our way to riverdale perk (another great spot in the area) and decided to stop in. the barista was very nice, personable, and welcoming, and the owner was super enthusiastic and easy to talk to. my boyfriend (who is very particular about this coffee) ordered an iced oat milk latte and said it was made *perfectly*. we don't live in the area but will definitely make an effort to head back to the shmooz next time we're in the east end to try out some of their delicious looking lunch options. support local and support the shmooz :) read more

The Shmooz is such a nice place to have in the neighbourhood. Our favourite cafe in the area by far. Fantastic croissants. Friend from Montreal said they were better than famous ones back there. I've had nothing but an absolutely excellent time here! Visiting from NYC, and found myself here on a short walk from our AirBNB. Baristas were beyond wonderful, giving us so many suggestions of places to check out. We went to them all, and loved it! The coffee is fantastic, the poutine (which is gluten free, fellow Celiacs) is to die for. Don't even bother with the small-- go right for the large. You'll thank me for that! I learned that there aren't really any thickening agents in the gravy either-- just thickened with root veggies. Amazing! They have tons of gluten free options (pastries and sandwiches), as well as "normal" ones. The tea is served in a small French press and if you're unsure of which to choose, there's a wall where you can smell them all! None of them are a bad choice. It looks like I'll have to immigrate because this cafe is that great. :) read more

Very high quality food for an indie coffee shop. Not the cheapest but the quality makes up for it.

The food, service and atmosphere are all lovely at The Shmooz. My husband says it has the best poutine he has ever had in his life. It's even gluten free. Big praise! I really enjoyed their green eggs no ham on a freshly baked croissant. Plus the mural is fantastic. Sam & Marc read more

i had read a review in toronto life or blogto and since i live in the area i wanted to see what was up. plus driving to bathurst north for a good "jewish" chicken noodle soup is out of the question most nights. chicken soup - just meh, they put in penne pasta which made no sense to me. croissant was pretty good. ambience is nice. i was rather put off by the cook that day who gave me unlimited stink eye (you're not cool lady). could see returning for a coffee and a croissant if im in a pinch and probably not a bad a place to spend the afernoon working on a laptop. read more

Love this place! They have an excellent selection of delicious gluten free pastries as well as a large selection of teas. They even have a tea-smelling section where you can have a scent of almost all their teas without it being unsanitary. Staff is really friendly. Coffee is solid. Pre-made shakes are pretty decent, as well. They have large tables that are good for studying or lounging about with a board game. The bathrooms are very nice; no paper towels but a forceful enough air dryer. read more

The best! Rare to have a coffee shop where the food is just as good as the drinks. Warm, friendly, neighbourhood vibe. Great coffee & tea, but also a wicked spot for lunch. All their sandwiches are great (I've had friends freak out about the Carne sandwich, but I'm vegetarian so haven't tried it), but I'm obsessed with their salads. They make all their food fresh in-house and even have their own little veggie/herb garden. The Queen Elizabeth muffin is the best gluten free muffin in Toronto, hands down. I like the decor here, and there is an interesting selection of food. I've been twice and the coffee is ok, nothing really special, and my Americano was bitter, which to me is unforgivable. There's an older gent working here whom I find off-putting and not very welcoming. He just seems annoyed all the time! I visit such places to relax and if you don't seem to want me there I will oblige you. I wouldn't go out of my way to visit, and don't dig the vibe of this place. read more

Paid almost $15 for a tiny sandwich that would fit inside a sub anywhere else. It feels like one of those places where they hope hot servers will make up for inferior products. If I'm going to pay $15 for a sandwich I want layers of chicken, not single neatly placed slivers. It tasted good, I just wish it was more than an appetizer. read more

A great place to spend an afternoon working on a laptop. Good coffee and treats, and the onion croissants - are to die for!

What a fabulous cafe! The coffee is wonderful, including a huge selection of teas and yummy smoothies. The baked goods, croissant and panini sandwiches and salads are made in house and you can tell that they are passionate about the quality of the food. I mean who can resist peanut butter, honey and banana on a croissant? The gluten free muffin is by far the best I've ever had. The ambiance is beautiful, warm and inviting with a huge whimsical mural celebrating the neighbourhood. What a great find on Pape just below the Danforth! read more
