They have been known to mislead about the opportunities they offer and have been known to mislead about the positions, opportunities and they are offering during their initial interviewing process, at times intentionally misleading or deceiving potential employees into a belief of job stability which they may not keep their word on e.g. telling prospective employees that they will have a full time full year position with a pay increase after the first four months, then blindsiding these employees by terminating them after the first four months by insisting that they only actually hired said employees as short term seasonal workers. read more

Halifax Seed is almost as good as it gets when it comes to gardening supply stores in Hali-town. The only draw back is their lack of organic and local seeds. Coming upon this brick building today with my sweet avid gardener and plant loving pal, Jess, a slew of childhood memories came flooding back. I haven't been to this store since the days of playing amongst bags of peat moss and touching every single thing in sight. The store was abuzz with sunlit energy, as patrons scooped up shovels, seeds, bags of soil, as well as ready to plant goodies like strawberry bushes and daylilies. There were quite a few staff members who were ready to assist shoppers, like Jess, who inquired about grape vines. The store is quite large with a lovely outdoor space filled with greenery. I couldn't help but snap some photos of the gorgeous blooms! I urge you to take a trip to this unique store. The paintings outside on the brick exterior will let you know you've found the place just fine. Bring your green thumb and sense of adventure. I suggest buying pea seeds, ooh, and there were cool little asparagus sprouts, too. You should buy those as well. read more

Halifax Seed was packed Saturday as everyone was looking for a Mother's Day gift. Packed with goodies for gardening from anything to gloves and gardening tools to shoves and spades. Great bags and rubber boots and these are fancy. I purchased Gladiola bulbs that you can actually plant now and should come up late June early July 25 bulbs for $15.96. As well they have alot of seeds as well as vegetable seeds to start a garden. Out back in the fenced section there are shrubs and trees as well as bagged dirt and lime for the lawn. Honestly I wish I knew more about gardening but the staff here are great and they are friendly and willing to help. Great information was given to me for my purchases. read more

Needless to say this is one of my mothers favorite stomping grounds, and it's really a great store to find a huge variety of plant starting supplies. Whether you are looking for seeds, bulbs or stems- you'll find them here. Halifax Seed also offers a number of unusual but essential plants like aforementioned grape vines, and a wide selection of trees and shrubs that puts many grocery chain garden centres to shame. If you have a green thumb, (or more importantly if you don't have a green thumb), you should check out Halifax Seed. They have all the fixings for a great summer of gardening. read more

I have to say that I have not spent much time (up to this year) at Halifax Seed. It seemed every time I went there it was so busy that one on one questions with staff was impossible. This year is my year for growing my own food (that's not to say that I would eat out frequently so the reviews will keep a-coming). I noticed on twitter that Halifax Seed are conducting seminars so off I went (to two thus far). What a different experience! Lots of time for questions and their knowledge is astounding! Check out the classes for those who what to become a gardener - you won't be sorry. In all honesty I will probably avoid this place on the weekends during growing season. It is just too busy. But if you know what you want and just need a gesture in the direction of it, this is a good place to go. I will have to check out their transplants this year. I will update you on it. read more

I have to say I was a little let down here. I had never been but always admired the charm of the building and its location and figured that the steady stream of peninsula dwellers coming in and out couldn't lead me astray. When we popped in to the garden centre, the selection was a bit unpredictable. Some things that we had expected to find with no problem were nowhere to be seen, and then a lot of the things that we did find were poorly labeled or organized within the outdoor selection. To be honest, aside from being locally owned and operated (yay!), there wasn't a whole lot more to the experience that I've seen at your average grocery store garden centre. Staff were slightly more personable, although quick to write off questions by just walking away mid-sentence with no resolution. There wasn't anything that really put me off, but nothing worth singing musical numbers about either. read more

I don't have much of a green thumb, but I had to review this place for the "greenery" requirement of the Yelpspiration reviews as I recently stopped in to pick up a Mother's Day gift. While I ended up settling on a gift card, I enjoyed wandering around looking at all the different options and the staff were helpful. Mostly I just love the charming building and location (love me some hydrostone area). I can't wait to have more green space of my own so I can return to get a vegetable garden going. read more

We usually come here a couple of times n the Spring to stock up on seeds to start in the greenhouse or plant in our garden. Fairly good selection of seeds here. The greenhouse isn`t large so the selection of seedlings, annuals and perennials is not as good as larger nurseries. The prices are good if you find what you want. Quite a large selection of gardening tools and accessories, most likely can find just about any tool you`ll need. The staff are generally friendly and quite helpful. This is just one of many nurseries we visit to stock our veg & flower gardens but good for those who live nearby in the city. read more

I've been here once today, but my boyfriend has been here many times before. We have a plant that has been a bit under the weather recently and we assumed it needed a bigger pot. As we're looking for a pot, one of the employees comes up to us and asks if we need anything. They were unbelievably helpful. They help us pick out a pot that's a perfect fit, recommend some soil to fill it with, and even show us some fertilizer that should get it back up on its feet (or roots). I recently had to buy a gift for a friend who did our family a very nice deed. What do you buy someone who has everything. My only thing I could think of was some flowers that would come back every year. She is a gardener at heart and you would think you were at the public gardens when you go to her house. Since I know nothing about plants, other than they look great. I asked for the help of the staff. I wanted to get her something nice. We choose a Burning Bush, and then I bought her a beautiful planter for the front of her house. The staff here is great. read more

When I want something different in vegetables such as a unique tomato or unusual flowering plants I go to Halifax Seed. It is so wonderfull to find such a great mixture. Knowledgable staff and unique plants. You won't find these plants at Kents or the Super Store Garden centre. Best tools here too. read more

I buy a lot of Halifax Seed seed packages at in my local area stores , and generally find them less expensive and satisfactory . However they carry certain varieties year after year which are just not good seeds for our area , the Valley . I have had no luck with Long Island Improved brussels sprouts , nor Green Sprouting broccoli for example , having tried them several times over the last 32 years. They do not head up , even in ideal conditions .Much better are Jade Cross E sprouts , and Premium Crop broccoli , sold by other retailers , success every time . Do not buy anything from the Rothesay Ave Halifax Seed if you expect them to honor the warranty they are so proud to tell you about when you get sucked in to buying from them. Three year warranty on a Toro snow blower the sales man said... Nothing to worry about for three years... Nothing but BS!... They find a way to talk away any warranty claim, and will charge you to look at the machine before telling you if there is a warranty claim. You are at the mercy of this outfit and they have no mercy. read more
