We were looking for somewhere that did a Sunday roast and unfortunately the City Vault don't. I was pleasantly surprised by the interior, it was cosy and a little old fashioned which I personally like in a pub! We ordered two beef roasts, costing a very affordable £5.25 each! The sliced roast beef came with half a giant Yorkshire pud, a ball of sage and onion stuffing, some roast, mashed and boiled potatoes (sounds a lot but it actually wasn't as they only put a few of each style on the plate), veg and gravy. It wasn't the best beef I've ever had but it was nice enough, especially considering the price! My favourite parts of the meal were the roast potatoes and the gravy. The Yorkshire pud was pretty decent too. We proceeded to order a cappuccino and a hot chocolate but my friend confused the staff by changing her order last minute and they ended up bringing over a cappuccino, a latte AND a hot chocolate. They were kind enough to let us keep the extra one for no extra charge. I really like it when staff in restaurants and bars do this because the alterative is chucking it away and what's the point in that :) The coffee itself wasn't great so I won't be ordering that again, too bitter. I plan on trying the chicken next time.

We actually went twice in one day, once for beer and then back for dinner. Hubby had the lamb chop and cleaned his plate. I got the Korean chicken and the fried mac n cheese, I would go every night for those alone! Every seat in the place has views of several TVs so worked out well to watch Queen Elizabeth funeral today, memorable broadcast.

This huge Lloyds Number One is directly oppposite the Bus Interchange and looks good if you are Wetherspoons fans. It is am impressive conversion of what seemed to be an interesting local cinema. Reading the plaque outside, we found it had been a number of things in its past, including a warehouse and a religious building. Inside, the feeling is that it is just in the process of conversion and will be stunning when completed. This made reading the plaque even stranger as the conversion was actually seven years ago! As with all Wetherspoons outlets, there was a selection of good real ales (not a large selection, but at least four), the advertised real cider was bottled. I asked for the draught real cider and was offered Strongbow... The food we had was actually superb. Knowing it is standard "instant" meals, we never expect anything fancy, but the cod fillet in pomodoro sauce with rice was wonderful. My wife had the fish, chips and peas and actually ate the chips; those who know her will know what a recommendation that is!

So there we were driving around on Sunday looking for somewhere to have "Fathers day" lunch…read more Looking for the usual 2 for 1 or all you can eat for a fiver deals (I'm a bloke from Yorkshire, therefore I'm tight) but to no avail....... then I just remembered this place from my youth and headed over and BINGO! Big chalk board outside said Fathers day lunch £7.50, I conned the wife into going halves (she was fed up of driving round by then) so we went in. We were greeted by friendly bar staff and a more restaurant approach but in a rural pub setting which was a bit odd but good, grabbed a couple of pints of rancid old scrotum or some other cask ale and parked at the table which the waitress helpfully showed us to. The menu had a choice of 4 meals, 5 starters and plenty of puddings (desserts if you're from that London) which were all specials for the day. I chose a steak and ale pie with new spuds etc and the wife a beef dinner with all the trimmings....... service took around 10 minutes so I bought more "Armpit sweat" or "Old bags eyeball juice" or some other beer of some strange name. Believe me when I say it was worth the driving around and having to drink beer with twigs in (I don't have a beard or corduroys or a tank top so I prefer my beer twig free) as I can honestly say it was a genuinely home made pie, in a dish with just a crust on top and filled with half a cow and some fungus pieces (mushrooms of the non magic variety) all swimming in gravy that I believe was made from the tears of an angel. The vegetables were a plenty and in bowls to share between us which gets me on to the wifes choice of roast beef dinner, she said it was the best beef she's ever had and believe me when I say she's had a lot of meat in her lifetime ;) It was melt in the mouth and enough to leave her with a smile on her face and the yorkshire pudding (no that's not the wifes nickname) was fresh made and delicious. So next time you're in the Drig area or even not but want a bally good nosh (sorry I just put my Tim Nice But Dim head on) put BD11 1LJ into your Satnav, you will not be dissapointed.

But don't let that put you off, and don't let the congregation of old wrinkly smokers outside put you off either. It's not too bad on the inside of this former pool hall. OK, so it's not the most pleasant Wetherspoons ever. It's full of old men staring into their pints of bitter, and the tables and floors are a bit sticky. However, I went here with my family when they came to visit and I had an absolutely delicious sweet potato and chick pea curry, which was served piping hot, unlike the food in many of Manchester's larger Wetherspoons. I also tried an alcoholic ginger beer which was delicious and much cheaper than it would be in any other of Chorlton's establishments. On top of this I was able to educate myself about the history of Chorlton by reading the displays and looking at the black and white photos of the good old days, that most of the patrons are likely to remember. It could do with a lick of paint and some TV screens, but hey, it's Wetherspoons and it's cheap.
