While visiting Bury Open Market on one of the Market Days (Friday), my wife and I were a little hungry and in need of a rest. This huge Lloyds Number One is directly oppposite the Bus Interchange and looks good if you are Wetherspoons fans. It is am impressive conversion of what seemed to be an interesting local cinema. Reading the plaque outside, we found it had been a number of things in its past, including a warehouse and a religious building.
Inside, the feeling is that it is just in the process of conversion and will be stunning when completed. This made reading the plaque even stranger as the conversion was actually seven years ago!
As with all Wetherspoons outlets, there was a selection of good real ales (not a large selection, but at least four), the advertised real cider was bottled. I asked for the draught real cider and was offered Strongbow...
The food we had was actually superb. Knowing it is standard "instant" meals, we never expect anything fancy, but the cod fillet in pomodoro sauce with rice was wonderful. My wife had the fish, chips and peas and actually ate the chips; those who know her will know what a recommendation that is! read more
