James and myself would have been perfectly willing to wait as we really wanted to dine at Reds, but Roweena was making hungry, growling noises and sprinkling passing children with seasoning and mumbling "that one would taste lovely with some bar-b-q relish on it!". So before there was an "incident" we decided to head down to Brooklyn Bar so Row could get her freak-on and tear into some red meat. The bar staff couldn't have been more pleasant, attentive and helpful. I opted for the rum burger and a pint of Blue Moon beer. I have never had Blue Moon before and it is a spot-on refreshing drink. When my burger came it was stacked with fresh salad and perfectly cooked onion rings. The meat was lovely and juicy and deceptively big. The fries where cooked just right. James had a rack of ribs and they looked spectacular. Definitely trying them next time. I will be checking in here again.

However, there are some things you can't fault, and that would be the service and the food. I'll, of course, go into some detail. The bad news: The bar really isn't to my tastes. Not in terms of décor, but in terms of style. The music is (and I can already hear what you're going to say) too loud and too pop for my tastes. (Whatever, I'm old.) When it's a Wednesday night and no one is in your bar, why must you ear bleed me with Rhianna and that awful awful Blurred Lines song? No one wants it. Or, at least, no one I know. I am also not a fan of TV screens, but I realise some folks do like to watch a bit of footie. People often enjoy it when a leggy man does a goal, I understand that. It's rustic looking and attractive, and has a gorgeously decked out little beer garden (big umbrellas please, for when it rains) so it could be much more - but alas, it's a little like a replica of vodka rev or brb in terms of personality. It needn't be - everyone else was in the aforementioned bars for their Wednesday shooter and R'n'B. My wish would be that it lives up to the NY name more, and actually takes that vibe on a little more. Underground and interesting music on the Spotify, to link into their (I'm assuming, haven't tried) NY cocktail menus and food. Just my opinion, like. ANYWAY! The food. My word, the food. If you come here for just one thing, let it be the burgers. Let it be the California burger, with skin on fries, and delicious crispy SFC strips. It does the same as most, and bungs them in a placcy basket to look all authentic, but when you bite down on that mother of a beef patty, and let the guac, onion rings, melty beef, jack cheese, and the rest assemble in your gob, you know you've made it. You've made it. Welcome to flavour country. I am a fan. As ever, and as will almost always be in Leeds, I wished the burger had been a touch more pink. But - my folly - I didn't ask it to be so. Welcome oh Welcome Dish!!! Having nearly an hour to kill prior to needing to be in the Carriageworks we dropped into dish. The interior reminds me more of a dining room than a formal bar or restaurant. Quirky padded window seats, feature fireplace, small or large tables to accommodate all party sizes and a piano which I'm reliably informed does actually feature in the life of the place. We sat in a raised table adjacent to the food prep area and the snug bar so we had a great watching place. My friend had arrived slightly before me and ordered so as I sat I was presented with a lovely chilled Prosecco and him a very deep and fruity red wine. The atmosphere was very laid back and a party of diners (8) seemed to be having a lovely time. We browsed the very attractive food and drinks menu which offer something tasty and suitable for all types. The food highlights good local ingredients with a tasty flair and is presented with love (believe me- I saw the effort the chef and sous put in). The kitchen is tiny yet well organised so its a miracle these dishes get so well put out. As well as the fab food and drink menu (with special 'set menu' offers) there is also a 'nibbles' menu which I absolutely LOVE the idea of. Some days you don't want to just eat dinner- some days i like to pick! I chose 'pickled chillies', 2 oysters and a pork pie with chutney. Wow, all hit the spot and well accompanied our 2nd lot of drinks wonderfully. (they also do pork scratching's which I will definitely be back to test!) The food which was presented out to the diners looked soooooo nice I kept loosing thread of the conversation we were having!!! if you join their mailing list you get 10% voucher off food and as we'd done that there and then when we got our bill they'd given us the 10% off which was nice. It was gone 9.30pm, so we rushed here and fortunately managed to catch the last service - as luck would have it there was a table for two right there waiting for us. Having been here previously, when it was still Aglassto, I was hoping that the cool ambience still remained. And sure enough, it has. The space itself is gorgeous. It feels like a Victorian living room, with a quaint fireplace, piano at the entrance, a snug bar area around the back and limited dining tables within the main space. The service, throughout, was excellent. We were seen to swiftly and in a very friendly manner, and managed to order really quickly and grab a drink. The chap was great when we asked to nip out for a cig before eating, and came and found us when our food arrived, which was really lovely of him! Whilst the menu is small, it all reads really well, so I'm keen to return to try some of the other dishes. The wines, dessert wines, puddings and other bits all sound excellent too, but on this occasion we were defeated by one main course. I had the slow cooked lamb and polenta, which was really very good. We had a side of greens to accompany, which were perfectly cooked, and the whole experience was a treat. I can't quite put my finger on what was missing, perhaps that I've realised I'm not so much of a polenta fan, but I'm sure it was more a taste thing than a quality thing. As I've said, I certainly want to come back to try more of their menu items! Another bonus is that it was really reasonable for what I'd consider edging into the fine dining arena. When we read about it in the local paper we just had to have a look and see whether it had been improved. It most definately has. The ambience of the pub remains the same. A good english pub with good food a great ambience and not overpriced. However it does go beyond pub grub. I will tell you of our experience then you may judge for yourselves. Wet dog, in laws who are not adventurous and all of us not dressed to kill after a days walking. We sat outside in the rear patio area. Wonderfully solid yet comfortable seats and tables with enough space to give you privacy but also able to feel part of the community. Each table had a very large umberella which as happened to us when it started to rain kept us dry. Although the staff did invite us in (even with the dog.) Wonderfully attentive staff, beautifully presented although a bit bemused at times by the menu but this was their first week! The menu is comprehensive you can have a light snack a main meal or a more adventurous choice at any time of the day. All the produce is local and you can tell, it's good up here! We opted for no starters although we were all sorely tempted.The fish pie is to die for, fluffy mash and a solid amount of fish white and sustainable and salmon succulent prawns and a creamy sauce. Others in the party opted for a side dish with this but it was not necessary as it was filling in itself. The vennison which my husband had was to die for. Beautifully presented and every item on the plate cooked to perfection. The steak again was a triumph and for a father in law who has the same everywhere he goes this was the best he had had, he always has pepper sauce with it which he declared a triumph and did not this time pour it all over the steak as it was to good to ruin! Nigel you have triumphed he is Scottish and this is the first time he has eaten a steak in England without the sauce. Although the sauce was splendid!Whilst we where there some friends arrived and they chose the pate which they allowed me to taste, it was sumptous and served on boards with plenty of homemade warm bread,butter and beautifully displayed in a Kilner jar. However, you cannot please everyone and our friends did not like the kilner jar?? The staff bring your food outside and place it on a small trestle table and then serve it which is a lovely idea. The interior is just as delightful, cosy with open fires in the winter and a lovely light ambience in the summer. The only downside for me was the central ordering system which seemed out of place and more suited to a fast food pub. I must add thought that this is no reflection on the member of staff as they were helpful to the unth degree! All the desserts we had were wonderful especially the seasonal blackberry creme caramel. My only slight fault was that the pancakes which I had were slightly overcooked but a small complaint in the grand scheme of things. As a seasoned traveller with dogs and the disabled this is an easy access pub and the staff are soooo helpful it is wonderful. They would have been quite happy to have moved a table for us to accomodate our needs and this can be rare. Give this place a try I do not think you will be disappointed and for you wlakers out there with dogs it is a joy. Easy parking to the rear and the front. Easy access to the rear and the front for disabled and wheelchair access although a bit tight to go to to the toilets.

However, upon arrival we had to 'search' for a member of staff to book us in. She showed us to our table and took our orders. My daughter had the vegan burger which should have come with roasted crushed potatoes. Instead it came with new potatoes. When she queried this, her plate was taken away and the potatoes crushed with the plate returned to her. My son in law ordered a bacon burger. The main ingredient to this is bacon but alas the burger was lacking bacon. When he queried this he was given two small rashers of bacon on a saucer. Both my daughter and son in law asked for unlimited drinks. When they asked the waitress for top ups they never got them. A very disappointing visit. Next time when I visit my daughter I think I will eat elsewhere. NO WONDER THE WHITEGATE INN ARE OFFERING DISCOUNT VOUCHERS, THIS IS TO TRY AND GET PEOPLE TO EAT THERE WHO PERHAPS WOULDN'T DO OTHERWISE!

Pubs and bars in or around train stations are, generally speaking, a bit weird. I am not confident…read moreof the explanation as to why this is, but if I had to hazard a guess, I would look no further than the clientele they attract. There are usually a contingent of nervous passengers who are frightened of missing their train, and so continuously check various timepieces. Suited business types linger around, checking electronic diaries for details, and men of a certain age flock to these venues with their reasonable prices and comfortable seats. The Brewery Tap has managed to buck the trend. As one of three Leeds Brewery supported pubs, there are an impressive range of ales on show. The customary Leeds Best, Leeds Pale and Midnight Bell ales sit proudly on the bar, their dominance providing a welcome example of regional identity for visitors and residents alike. A couple of expertly sourced ciders also adorn the bar, namely West Croft's Janet's Jungle Juice and Broadoak's Premium Perry. Both originating from Somerset, these ciders are CAMRA awarded, and I personally wish to award them too. I may fashion a trophy out of tin foil, depending on how many premium strength ciders I have consumed. The most impressive aspect of The Brewery Tap, is that they brew their own tipple in a microbrewery in the pub. It is visible for punters to enjoy a close up, when journeying up to the toilets. Just to clarify, a glass wall does seal the pumping equipment from the general public - there could be no unfortunate accidents regarding the location of the toilets. I have only ever indulged in the bar snacks on offer at this pub, but the sticky chicken skewers I ordered were delightfully succulent. I have jealously envied other people's food at The Brewery Tap however, practically being floated through the air with my nostrils directing me on the visible aroma, similar to a cartoon. The menu boasts a wonderful selection of pies, fish and chips, burgers and other such classics; as well as some sharing platters, ideal for sociable grazing. The Brewery Tap hosts a quiz night every Monday evening, a pleasurable distraction to the beginning of the week. The bar shows major sporting events on a pull-down projector screen, which is generally a civilised affair with a section cordoned off to allow other customers to retain a peaceful atmosphere. The Brewery Tap is a brilliant venue to enjoy a drink or some food, whether you are catching a train or not. Any bar that provides me with interesting Oscar Wilde, Chuck Kilman and Albert Einstein quotes to read in the bathroom, is outstanding in my eyes.

I've usually had a couple of cheeky vimtos and should really get on that train and head home but it'd be rude not to go for a swift half en route and the brewery Tap is that place. The Brewery Tap is a really nice bar just opposite the NCP cap park and literally two minutes away from the station. There isn't too much on New Station Street these days so it really stands out. Inside it's a cool little number. Really nicely finished off and a pleasant atmosphere. They've also got a good selection of drinks, especially as it's not the biggest venue on earth. What is really fantastic about it though is the fact it's independent and part of the Leeds brewery. So you can get proper Leeds beer lass, brewed in our fine city and complete with a large serving of Yorkshireness. Brilliant. You can also get a few tasty snacks to help wash down that tasty Leeds beverage but it's all about the drinkettes for me. It's fast becoming a regular stop off for me on my way home and if I can keep the wealth in our Yorkshire walls, I'll do it. Well done Leeds for a good pint and a good pub.
