As a family we are always on the look out for new places for yumcha, so when my mum and dad asked…read moreme if I wanted to check it out with them I was pretty much first in the car. This is the second Imperial China, from the restaurant in Chinatown. On the out skirts of Watford it's easy to find and there's plenty of parking. If you're coming for dim sum I think they serve until 5pm on week days not too sure on weekends. Staff are friendly and very efficient and the restaurant is really tastefully decorated. The dim sum we had was fantastic, and my mum, dad and aunty are not ones to throw around praise if it's not deserved. I think we may have found a regular haunt here. YUM!

We dined here yesterday. The restaurant specialises in £17.50 a head "all you can eat" buffet: two…read morestarters, two main courses, plus rice, noodles and vegetables, and more of the same to follow if you still have an appetite. Drinks are extra. A sign at the entrance proclaimed that dim sum (referred to in an earlier review) was now permanently off the menu. We were also offered an a la carte menu. But, as that contained set meals comprising the same dishes as the barbecue, but at higher prices, we gave it a miss and ordered the barbecue. To say the service was slow would be an unparalleled understatement. It was for the most part stationary. The starters took 25 minutes to start arriving, after which they emerged from the kitchen at 5 minute intervals. The same happened with the main courses. We began to wonder if they were hot-wokking on a one ring Belling. Despite the painfully slow food delivery, I noticed that drinks (priced extra) were served and refreshed very promptly, both to us and nearby tables. Chinese tea was good, and a pitcher of ice cold tap water was delivered immediately without complaint. When the food eventually arrived, it was hot, but varied between tasteless, dried-up, greasy, and over-spiced. Unusually, not one dish stood out as good; but three were inedible: a soup ordered by my companion, a vegetable puree starter, and some noodles, which smelled burned and tasted greasy. Again unusually, there were no deserts or fresh fruit on the menu. When my companion politely mentioned that the vegetable starter was not very good, the waitress pointedly made no comment, ignored her and looked away. It worked. We made no attempt to comment further. In fact, the staff were generally inattentive and hard to find. To our shock, we saw a gentleman in a wheel chair arrive and struggle to open the door while staff stood by, watched and ignored him. I love Chinese food. I have eaten excellent (and not so excellent) Chinese food in Europe, the USA, the middle east and Africa as well as all over this country. Apart from a notably terrible restaurant in Philadelphia, this was probably the worst Chinese dining experience I have ever encountered. The staff told us on three occasions that things were about to improve due to the installation of self service, hotel-buffet-style, warming counters, so that large quantities of food can be prepared and kept warm. You may think that would be an improvement, but I couldn't possibly comment... The final straw was the 12.5% service charge added to our bill. We were tempted to pay the bill and make them wait an hour for the service charge. But, preferring a hasty getaway to ruining an already spoiled evening with an argument, we flourished the plastic and drove home past the nearby MacDonald's - which had never before looked QUITE so good. (PS my dining companion mentioned our experience to a friend today, who, it emerged, had also eaten there and experienced exactly the same problems.)

Chikiyan Team- perhaps its Time to review how you deal with customers and appoint a manager so that you don't all stand around looking at each other with blank expressions - You could have changed the outcome with some communication, sense and curtesy - Maybe requesting cash from customers in return for offering them a discount - allows you to make more for doing less business as likely untaxed- but we would prefer to pay full price and simply receive what we ordered Remember you are a local restaurant and should make a better effort to avoid locals considering to go to alternative chinese - of which there are plenty ..

That said, all the food is very nice and well prepared. The place gets busy at weekends and the staff seem to find drinks orders hard to get right. It is good value if you find a night when you can't be bothered cooking, but nothing special. The toilets facilities are ok, and there is no parking on site, but a car park is 100 yards down the road.
