This is a hidden gem in Amarillo. Matter of fact, when you plug in the directions to find the place, you will actually be looking for the RV Sales Center. The "free" RV Museum is the labor of love of the owner of an RV sales center. Over the years he has come across some great recreational vehicles that were either sold or given to him. He has taken the time to restore them and showcase them in their glory. At the entrance, the sales people are super friendly and will immediately direct you to the back lot and a large building holding the museum. They didn't even try to engage me in pre or post sales talk to judge my interest. I was so thankful this didn't end up being a bait and switch for a high pressure sale. The museum is a wonderful collection of camper vans, RVs, and accessories through the ages. They have the oldest Slipstream trailer from the 1930s in addition to more recent paraphernalia from each decade since then. Many of the campers are open so you can climb the steps and wander inside to see what passed as creature comforts back in the day. Most include bathrooms, showers, stoves, refrigerators, sinks, and cushy seating areas that convert to beds all in the colors and textures fashionable at the time of manufacture. If you have done any camping in your lifetime, your sure to enjoy a walk through this free museum. It's best visited in the winter when it is cool, but bring a jacket to stay warm. During the summer months, it is difficult to keep the building cool as seen by the large fans throughout, so perhaps visit in the early morning before the afternoon sun heats the place.

For free, you can't beat this roadside attraction. We're RVers, so our kids loved looking in all of the antique RVs and checking out how the amenities have changed over time. We really enjoyed how they had time period specific memorabilia as well like toys, food containers, and newspapers from the times the specific RVs were built.

I wouldn't go as far as to call myself an enthusiast, but I'm definitely a little obsessed with RVs and what they represent. This place is free to stop and check out and the staff was very friendly. Even met the owner himself. Your even allowed to get inside the RVs and check them out! Lots of old vintage looking stuff everywhere, def not a place you want to miss when passing through Amarillo!

Fun stop for RV enthusiasts. Worth the free entrance to see the nice collection of antique RV's, bicycles, and gas pumps, etc. You can also shop in the RV store on your way out.

A must see if you enjoy travel. This is a little slice of Americana taking you through the years of vacations and how people enjoyed those trips on the road. Best of all it is entirely FREE!!!! I consider this one of those unofficial Route 66 stops that just has to be seen. Notable items inside include the Movie bus from Robin Williams RV, Maxx Factors former rolling tour bus and so many more.

My wife and I enjoyed the RV museum hidden inside the larger RV sales lot. Pull up to the welcome center, go inside and they will direct you out back to the museum. Once there you are free to climb into the RVs and take all the pictures you want. We stopped in on a quiet Friday afternoon and had the place to ourselves. They have exhibits dating back to the 20s and 30s that had been wonderfully restored. In addition to RVs, they also have quite a few Harleys on display. I enjoyed the original Winnebago dating back to the 70s. Overall the museum is very done. We got through it in less than 60 minutes. Stop in and say hi plus it's free admission.

Okay this was one random stop we made while driving through Texas and it was honestly one of our favorites! You by no means have to be an RV enthusiast to snobby this stop. We certainly were not however we are fans of vintage items so this was a real treat! The RV's were so fun to look at, you get to go in most of them and peak around, many of them were 100% original and all had a fun back story. There was even a World War II Harley Davidson in there and there was only two in the world like it. Best part, it's 100% free! So if your driving through the area and want something unique to do I highly recommend this!

Changed stars from a 2 to a 4. 3/13-deployed to Amarillo from 2/27-3/12/2024 to support those impacted by the very recent wildfires. On my day off, I visited the Native American Heritage Center and gift shop. The museum is wonderful and has multiple rooms and open spaces filled with artists works, collections of all things Native. Well worth the stop and give the displays as much time as you can. BEWARE of the gift shop. They offer great merchandise including used books, handmade item, custom jewelry, etc. I bought several items, one being a pair of earrings tagged $36 and in a glass display case that was clearly marked 40% off. The clerk of Norwegian background confirmed the earrings were indeed 40% off. I bought them, postcards, and a beaded hair barrette. Returned to my room only to discover I received not a 40% discount but a 25% discount! I called during posted open hours over 2 days, leaving a voice message each time. I never had another day off to stop at museum before returning home. Still have not heard back about the error made, nor seen a correction made to my credit card.

When I first walked in I was a little bit intimidated because I ended up in a small Auditorium type room where a group of young people were learning native dancing. There was an older man and young boy up on the stage slowly beating the drum beat on huge drums with a wonderful sound and probably 20 or so children and teenagers listening as he called out the moves they should make to the beat, kind of like a square dance caller would tell the dancers what moves to make. I sat and watched this for a while and enjoyed it. As I was looking around I saw a doorway that said entrance so I eventually walked over to it. There were three ladies talking just inside the entrance and I asked them if I was going the right way. They gave me a few quick directions and told me to enjoy looking. First I went into the little gift shop just to see what they had which was actually quite a bit in the way of jewelry, handmade items, Indian related gift items, better quality stuff than you see in a cheap tourist store. They had a wide selection of beads for sale also for people who were into doing their own beading. No one bothered me as I looked around and they seem to all know each other and enjoy visiting with each other. I'm sure if I'd had any questions someone would have been happy to answer. In the other rooms there were displays of beaded items, moccasins, Indian clothing, headdresses, Buffalo and deer heads and skins, old photographs from the area, dioramas of cliff dwellings, Papoose carriers, weapons, and historical information regarding the various tribes of the area and of the country as a whole. See my photos for a sampling but they just scratch the surface of what there was to see. I probably spent about an hour wandering around looking and reading. In one room there was some crafting going on of people working on beading. One person appeared to be making jewelry and others were working on beaded clothing. It was interesting to watch them for a few minutes. One whole wall was devoted to photos of young men from the area who had qualified as Eagle Boy Scouts. As a strong supporter of scouting through the school years myself I enjoyed looking through those. As a side note, it looks like they are preparing to expand the building according to a sign I saw as I was walking in. They seem to be very involved in activities not just displays so I look forward to coming back another time and seeing the progress they have made. Also I should mention there is a decent parking lot with not a far walk to the entrance. If you happen to be in Amarillo on one of the days this museum is open be sure to stop in and check it out if you are interested in the native heritage of the area. I thought it was well worth the time. I don't know about the summer hours but I'm sure their website tells what they are. In the winter they are only open from 1 to 5 p.m. on the weekends.

The place buzzes with curiosity from the moment you walk in. I kicked things off in the Sun, Earth & Universe gallery, pressing buttons to trigger solar flares and playing with real-time space weather--instant brain tickles that felt both geeky and awesome . Then I zipped over to the Outdoor Science Park, where a life-size T‑Rex and Triceratops loomed over a fossil dig pit. Kids were scooping up "bones" while I dodged tennis balls flying from a launcher--science meets playground shenanigans . Later, I curled up in the cozy Treehouse Reading Nook, surrounded by bird chirps from the aviary above--a peaceful contrast to the chaos of color bombs and bouncing probes . The highlight, though? The Space Theater, a full‑dome planetarium that launched me from Earth to black holes in minutes--complete with dramatic music and enough stars to rival my ex's eyes . It's clear DHDC is more than a kids' museum--it's a playground for inquisitive minds of all ages. Traveling exhibits keep things fresh, and a recent "Beyond: Unity in Community" display even won a national award for celebrating Afghan culture . Educational programs, planetarium shows, story times, and even sci‑fi-style "KABOOM!" demos fill the calendar . By the end of my visit, my cheeks hurt from smiling, my head buzzed with fun facts, and I momentarily considered launching myself into orbit. Instead, I left with a grin, a handful of newfound cosmic trivia, and a plan to bring all my friends next time. Bottom line: Don Harrington Discovery Center is science with soul--equal parts spectacle and insight. Whether you're a kid, a curious adult, or just someone who likes lasers and dinosaurs (who doesn't?), this place throws the perfect brain party.

I would say it has three parts; the building housing a detailed model railroad, an outdoor garden railroad, and the historic train engine and cars outdoors - including a Dept of Energy nuclear weapons transport train previously used for the nearby Pantex plant. The indoor train has representative modeling of the cities and rail lines east-west across the TX panhandle. The two level circuit route fills up much of the inside of the building. At this writing, it's pretty bare bones, the track is laid out, but lots of bare plywood and spaces for filling in the cities, buildings and features. Sky and clouds backdrops are looking good. Got a guided tour of the guard cars and engine of the "white train" used for nuclear weapons transport. Very interesting to see the security measures surrounding warhead transport. The garden railroad in front of the building is also still under construction. Currently has the brick foundation and dirt landscaping, and track is laid, but is not fully operational at this time.
