I've never been a huge fan of Indian food and have been put off from some horror stories of having…read morea funny belly for days. I've had to change my attitude, as now I can't say that due to Bala Da Dhaba being an exceptionally good restaurant. The food is truly amazing and I was surprised at how much I could eat. I don't know a lot about Indian cuisine but I was very impressed with the vegetarian dishes such as the Muttar Paneer and the Malai Kofta. The waiters are very friendly there where it is a great place to go with a few people to share some of the delectable dishes with a BYO beer or wine. My only criticism is that the setting is very formal and when I'm not in that mood I now get the food to go and head next door to the Lyrebird Lounge, where I can sit in the courtyard on a balmy night and listen to some live music. Either way, the food is where Bala is a winner and will most definitely satisfy the curry lovers but may turn a few, just like it did with me.

I'm a little sad that the old Bala Da Dhaba burned down. I had some good memories of that joint;…read moregood curry, good friends, awful Indian covers of old Eagles songs. But it's the same management and the same menu, so it's not like it's a total loss. And it's a good menu. Actually, it's a pretty average menu - standard Indian food, more or less. But it's done really well. Seriously, it's the best Indian I've had in Melbourne. Only complaint I can raise about them is that the in-house portions tend to be a bit smaller than the takeaway.

Came here on a Tuesday night in a group of 4 with a Groupon voucher. My party had booked days…read morebefore but there was no real need to as the restaurant was fairly quiet/empty at 7pm. There was one waitress who promptly served us and after she noted our selections down from a set menu, served only half the table their drinks. We had to remind her after about 10 minutes that 2 people in the group had yet to receive their drinks. My soft drink came in a can and there were bits of dirt stuck around the can surface. I didn't complain as I was given a straw and would not have touched the dirty surfaces but I did feel slightly grossed out by it. The food came within a reasonable amount of time, and the entrées were good. We had a combination of seekh kebab, chicken tikka and two vegetarian entrées. Flavours were there and table was very happy. Our curries took a little while which was surprising as there was no one else in the restaurant by the time we finished entrées.. The curry chicken was very tasty - it was a watery-type of curry but the meat was soft and the spices fragrant. Lamb vindaloo was also good, lots of sauce and flavour. The other two curries were a bit disappointing - beef vindaloo was very salty and the butter chicken was very sweet. For dessert we had gulab jamun and mango kulfi. The gulab jamun as expected was very sweet and it was served fresh hot which made it much easier to eat. The mango kulfi was the overall winner on the table; who could resist home made mango ice-cream? Overall, satisfying meal especially for the price we paid. Just be warned that service is slow, so expect to spend a bit of time waiting. Would I come back and dine again at full price? Yes, I would.
