My experience of rehearsal spaces in Leeds is actually minimal, which is pretty odd considering…read morethat I've been playing gigs about town (albeit the recent 2 year hiatus) for years. The main reason for this is that since we've never had a drummer before we've never required the space. My lounge/basement/bedroom has always served us with enough room to make noise, and given that I've a PA set up at home, there's been no need to go in search of extra added hz. In any case, the exciting news is that we're back, with added drum power and as much as I love feigning Janis Joplin in my lounge, somehow I think next door's newborn would not. Let alone the sleep deprived neighbours themselves... So! We needed somewhere to be, and the guitarist booked Eiger. It's basically on the cusp of LS1, and apparently walking distance from the Adelphi, but also the number one bus stops on the road right outside. Vox nightclub, which I've only just discovered, is right next door too, and given that reception is basically a bar with a huge space -I'm guessing these guys host gigs too. The bar is limited though, so if you're lucky you can grab a somewhat overpriced can of Strongbow, but they also have 7up and other soft drinks and boozes in tins. Not sure if hot drinks are available, and this is important -they're cash only. Don't be turning up hoping to pay on card. The rooms are £10/hour for the first two, then go down to £5/hour, which is pretty cheap, as far as I can tell. The room we had was curiously set up. There's a rather large raised bit of flooring, taped up in warning tape, the reason for this somewhat of a mystery. I mean, it didn't affect things, but it was a little odd. The PA system was a little tricky to work out (mostly, probably, due to our ignorance) and at one point it completely silenced. Fortunately, the dude came and fixed it up, and simultaneously made the sound 10x better. The chap was really friendly and helpful, so it's grand. We've already booked the next jam, and I'm looking forward to making more noise, so will update as and when. Essentially it's a really cool space, with awesome guys, plenty of equipment and it's (of course) independent. Win for all with musical powers. Get involved!

First time at this venue (and my first time in years in Leeds, actually) me and a few friends…read moreventured to Eiger Studios for Shed Fest. It's a relatively small venue (downstairs main area being around 300 people) and a couple of smaller rooms upstairs, no more than 20-30 in each room. The day itself was excellent, the bands were great. Bar staff were really easy going and the drinks were decent enough (£3.95 for a bottle of cider / beer) so nothing to complain about. Toilets were a little shabby, but it was a hardcore festival - I was prepared for the carnage. Overall a great little venue, would go back for another gig/fest. (Tip - if anyone's travelling from Manchester, it's less than a fiver to Leeds on the coach, and then a 2 mile taxi to the venue!)

During a recent visit, my guitarist accidentally walked into the wrong room to find that he was interrupting an Elbow rehearsal! They were polite, and he quickly scampered away. Well, if it's good enough for Elbow, then it's certainly good enough for me. The rooms are all of a big size, and full of character too. The rehearsal rooms are set out over five floors of an old mill, and all of the old brickwork and window fittings remain. The showcase rooms on the 3rd and 5th floors are amazing, with stages and big PAs giving you the option to practice as a line-up or even do an industry showcase. That's what these rooms are built for. There are plenty of different sized rooms to choose from though. Heck, they've even got an interactive map on their website. Go check it out! The sound can rattle about a bit in the bigger rooms, so it may take someone skilled in that department to get everything sounding balanced. Price wise, it's a bit more expensive than some of the other rehearsal studios in Manchester, but the character of the rooms really makes up for it.
