We have set the dial to 1906 in the town of Groton MA. Located about an hour outside of Boston & perched on top of Gibbet Hill in Groton, are the cryptic ruins of The Bancroft Castle. Many people think that you have to jump the pond & go to Europe & other continents to see castles. Not True. Here in America we have many castles; ironically they just aren't being promoted. This is one of the Secret Hidden Gems of America that most people have never heard about or been to before. THE HISTORY: In 1906 General William Bancroft constructed his castle on top of Gibbet Hill in Groton, Massachusetts. This place was a gift for his wife. It was originally intended to be a bungalow & more additions were going to be added to create a large castle. Unfortunately he didn't have the funds to complete his vision. In 1918 it became a sanitarium & in the 1930's the bungalow became an entertainment venue. On July 4 1932 the fireworks celebration went haywire & the bungalow caught fire. All that remained were the exterior stone walls. Since 2000, The Castle & it's trails became a protected open space for the city of Groton & open to the public. Great News for us! There is free street parking below the Castle on Lowell St . There is NO PARKING from DUSK TO DAWN otherwise you can Park there. There is also a sign with a notice that this is a Tick area. Take all precautions with DEET or other spray, long sleeve shirts & tucking pants into socks & shaking out of clothes etc. You can visit https://www.mass.gov/info-details/tick-borne-disease-prevention for the latest tick guidelines. Also just stay on the main cleared path & with precautions & spray you should be Fine. I wouldn't picnic here because of the ticks even though it's a beautiful spot. It's only a short walk up the hill to The Bancroft Castle. IT'S BEAUTIFUL! You will see meadows, trees, green grass, a beautiful Castle & a white structure in the distance. You can get right up close to the stone structure of Bancroft Castle. It offers a clear open window to the natural setting on all its sides & above too. After your exploring adventure, come on down the hill & it's only a few minutes drive to see that white building. It is The First Parish Meeting House built in 1755 in Groton. Happy Traveling. What's really nice is the outdoors. There's a garden space where you have a good lookout of the North Bridge, a significant location where the Minute Man faced the British Army. The path to the bridge is not too far of a walk, and you can see a beautiful memorial quoting Ralph Waldo Emerson's poem "the shot heard round the world." I also liked the plaque honoring the graves of the British soldiers since a lot of lives were lost on both sides for American Independence. The bridge is a great scenic walk and great to do for both history and nature lovers.

It is a mix of Fact, Fiction, Folklore & what do you see on that rock - all wrapped into one. Historians have pondered the mysterious etchings on the rock. Did a Native American artist create this or does this go back even further in time? A medieval battle sword is believed to be visible on the rock's ledge. Some people also see the outlines of a medieval knight in full battle regalia, holding a shield in one hand & a sword pointed downward in the other hand. The image supposedly identifies him as a Knight Templar. Some individuals believe the carving is evidentiary proof of the Scottish explorer Prince Henry Sinclair's visit to America. Legend has it that Sinclair followed in the footsteps of the Vikings & in 1398 crossed the Atlantic & made his way south to Nova Scotia & then to New England. That is a hundred years before Columbus. The Westford Knight carving has been showcased on the Discovery, History, & Travel Channels with their documentary programs. In 2013 there was also a feature film. There's more info but those are the main highlights. Until the science evolves & more accurate testing can be done & properly dated we can't be sure of any anecdotal evidence, heresay or what people think they see. So Christopher Columbus you have been saved; nothing to worry about at least for the time being. LOL! Not to diminish what Columbus did, but were there explorers from other civilizations that came here first? Could this be the new Plymouth Rock? Or is it a Bust? Hopefully in the near future, science will evolve & we will have the technology to test & answer those questions & others for sure. The Exploration & the Mystery is very Exciting & part of the discovery journey. You always hear about fantastic finds being uncovered in Egypt with the pyramids; not as much in America. It's being done but it's just not being promoted nor front page news. I'm giving this place 4 Stars but if they find out this is indeed legit I will automatically upgrade to 5 Stars. There is now a full scale statue here that instead of standing upright, is lying down on his back. Many people pass by here & don't even know this place even exists on Depot Street, near the Abbott School. The site just doesn't jump out at you. To make it worth your trip, there is an EXCELLENT place you can eat nearby called Kimball Farms also in Westford. It is a family owned & operated Entertainment Complex, Dining, & Country Store since 1939. They are Famous for their Homemade DELICIOUS Ice Cream. We planned a field trip to the Jackson Homestead with our homeschool group. We had nearly 30 people…read morebetween the ages of 7 and 50, and everyone enjoyed the visit. The attraction is reasonably priced for individuals visiting at $6 per person. The field trip was also very reasonable for up to 30 children and up to 10 adults. The foyer explains the background of the owners and their involvement with the abolition movement and the underground railroad in the 1800s. The children were able to look at source documents and work in teams to make inferences on the information and draw conclusions. Next, we moved to the lower level which is professionally outfitted with plaques explaining the history and a lot of fantastic artifacts. There were several interactive and "please touch" areas, which all the children (and even the teens enjoyed). There were boxes they could climb into to show what it was like to travel across the ocean as a captured slave, and the interesting story of Henry Box Brown. There was even an excavated well (covered with a grate, of course) that may have been used to hide fugitive slaves. On the main floor, the children were able to explore some of the other areas of the house, like "Newton's Toy Box," information on stained glass, and an extensive time-line of the house and history makers. Upstairs was a small area open to the public (due to their offices being on that floor) that had a flag on display from the civil war era. and envelopes used for propaganda during that time period. There were also pictures of the original rooms and textile samples with information about the dress at the time. The main floor also has a lovely little gift shop with a good variety of souvenirs. The staff was friendly and helpful. A most wonderful trip!

I didn't realize how important this site is to history but it was really nice to see letters and photographs of that time and about Newton area that nobody really thinks about. It was pretty cool to see all the old fashioned toys and clothes of the time. There is a lot of literature posted on the exhibitions. I really recommend going here.
