I don't know, but Gurkha's Inn has altered my opinion somewhat. I have no idea how Nepalese or Himalayan food differs from Indian food so if you're really snobby about that, stop reading this review as my opinion will be worthless to you. I was with some co-workers on our way back from Stonehenge on our day off and we had no idea where to eat and they were both craving Indian food. Since I was out-voted, I went with it thinking I could probably get Tandoori chicken and hopefully be fine with it. The restaurant was just opening when we arrived and although it's not a very large place, it is very comfortable and the decor makes the whole place feel warm and intimate. I think we were the first table sat and by the time our food arrived, the whole place was full! For a small town like Winchester, I was surprised, but then again, it was a Friday night. I did end up ordering the Tandoori chicken which I enjoyed immensely. I'm okay with some spice, but I don't like burning my mouth apart and this version of Tandoori was a good mix for my weak palette! My only advice if the owner is reading this... the restrooms (or I guess water closets as they say there?) are pretty gross. The floor was sticky and it didn't feel clean. Maybe bring some of the charm from the restaurant in there to clean it up? I don't know.

This is not as interesting a restaurant as one might hope. Like at least one other Gurkha restaurant in Winchester, the name is a an army reference to the base in town. It's an understandable retirement plan for a Nepalese soldier serving far away from home. Unfortunately, what probably seemed wonderful cooking in the mess hasn't translated seamlessly to the more demanding kitchen of a chef. The menu choice is very wide, a weakness of most middling curry houses. There is the standard gamut of Indian classics tailored to the takeaway crowd and a surprisingly large selection of chef specialities. My unmemorable encounter with one of these (I forget which) was disappointing. My girlfriend had a lot more luck with a sizzling clay oven cooked chop of lamb. This is not a bad restaurant, if it were a little cheaper I would give it three stars. As a takeaway it will probably serve you quite adequately. It's quite possibly even the best in Winchester.

They must be the nicest people on Earth (after me & you, fellow Qyper - well, me anyway. Not you. You're a bit funny....). Be sure to check out their totally groovesome website! Oh yes, avoid the Himalayan Beer. Like the snowman, it's abominable. Select my personal Beer of Choice (BoC) Cobra. Yes, I know it's Indian. Get down with the Indo/Nepali fusion, er, dude.

The starter of a lamb and vegetable broth was light, yet flavoursome, and an excellent appetiser. So it was disappointing that my curry main course was just so bland. I was really hoping for something very different to the usual curries, but I could easily have imagined getting something similar from an Indian takeaway. My wife's noodle dish was reminiscent of chicken chow mein you'd get from the Chinese takeaway. Having never eaten Nepalese cuisine before, I can't tell if it was just bad luck or if they've blanded everything down for the local Reigate crowd. A real shame.
