I give it a solid meh... Made reservations for our 25th anniversary. Told them it was our anniversary and that we're staying onsite in one of their nicer suites.
First off, the view is spectacular. If you are going solely for the view then you will be delighted.
We had a 6pm reservation. We showed up early and the gates were closed. There were people walking around who ignored us and also the other group waiting and so we waited... and waited... and waited at the entry. They opened the gates around 6pm and immediately disappeared back inside the restaurant, but continued to ignore us and not have anyone at the counter to welcome or seat anyone or even ask questions. At 6:08pm I approached a guy who finally walked out to the reception stand and said "we had a 6:00pm reservation and are wondering when they are going to seat us." He apologized and then blamed us for his staff ignoring us after both parties repeatedly said we each had a 6pm seating loud enough for anyone to hear and to every passerby.
We were seated at a table near the window with an incredible view of the course. Not the best table, but a very good one.
Not that it matters, but we were dressed like we had just come from a wedding, dressed in evening sports-coat, ascot and slacks, whereas the couple given the best table at the corner window so both could see the prized 18th fairway, were in blue jeans and t-shirts and looked like they had been walking all day. That's fine as we often do the same. My only point is it clearly was not their anniversary.
We then ordered a drink, the oysters, she got a Caesar salad and I got the lobster ravioli starter, tben we both ordered the filet. She requested medium and I requested my usual medium-rare plus.
Then appetizers came out, followed by the salad/ravioli. All looked great and tasted great. Service was a little slow, but not crazy.
They then brought a venison tartar with some mushroom that is apparently given to everyone. It was tasty and nicely presented along with some fresh bread and butter.
As we waited for the entre, my wife excused herself to the bathroom. As soon as she was gone, the waiter brought my entre only along with the sides we ordered (potatoes and mushrooms). He said he would bring her's when she came back. Honestly I was a little speechless they would bring mine when we both weren't seated. As a gentleman I was raised not to start eating without the lady seated as well so my food sat there until she arrived and they noticed her to bring her food over.
Her steak looked like a perfect medium. Mine however looked like a perfect well done. That would be great had I not ordered medium-rare plus. This was medium-well plus. It took a few minutes to flag someone down and the male manager came back and acted surprised and said he would have to ask the chef's opinion. Has he never seen a medium rare steak before? It should be red, not fully brown. He came back several minutes later and said they could redo my steak, but it would be another 10 minutes... By now my sides are really getting cold as is her steak.
It finally arrived and was medium plus, not medium rare. It was more well done than her medium. He asked me if it was fine and after cutting into a bite and then straight into the center of it, I said "it's medium plus, but it's better than before so sure I'll take it." I cut off about 1/3 of it as it was more medium well, but at the end of the day it was tender and it was already 2+ hours since we got there.
After we finished, 15-20 minute later, we sat and we sat and we sat. I had my silverware indicating I was done and still waited. Another 5-7 minutes goes buy and I comment that I wonder if they are ever going to check on us. Admittedly it hasn't been the best experience and our drinks have been empty for 15 minutes. I then start looking around and because we're beyond ready to go, I get the assistant waiters eye and she comes over and clears the table. She was nice, but not all that attentive either. She was really sweet and has potential, but not well trained for such a high priced restaurant. She asks if we wanted any dessert or coffee or anything else and we declined as our clock has expired for this place. She then offers to give us time to enjoy the table and we ask for the check as we had hoped to walk the course while there was still some light.
We pay and walk out.
By the way, no acknowledgement EVER that it was our anniversary.
Fortunately the evening or anniversary wasn't going to be made or broken based on their service or lack there of. I was warned about it lacking and sadly had to discover it myself. read more
