We came here for dinner and were seated outside. It was sweltering outside and there was no umbrellas so it became super uncomfortable very quickly. They only have large picnic tables to sit at so that wasn't real comfortable either. There aren't a lot of choices in Maupin so we continued with our order. They were out of 3 menu items that I asked for, which was really a bummer. I finally settled on something I wasn't super excited about. Once our food came, flies swarmed us. We were sweating from the direct sun, blinded by how bright it was with no shade or respite from the sun, and now we were batting flies off of our food. It made for a pretty disappointing meal. We asked to be moved inside, which they were able to do eventually but it definitely made for a frustrating dining experience. Our drinks were not refilled without being asked and there was a decent delay in getting our food. Our food was decent. The star of the show was the desserts. The berry crumble and blueberry cheesecake was to die for. All told, we would not come back unless we were guaranteed a seat inside or they got umbrellas and some comfortable seating on their outdoor deck. read more

We came on a holiday weekend. We got riverside taters and the roasted beet salad (highly recommended). There was a nice selection of beer, and we sat outside on the deck (later evening.) The service, even though they were closing in 45 minutes, was very good. Aside from salads, not a ton of vegetarian options without having mac and cheese, or some other kind of starch. That's OK, it's what I would expect. The roasted beet salad comes with a goat cheese wheel that's breaded and quickly fried - excellent. I see why it was recommended! read more

Heading home after a terrible little getaway when our friend suggested checking out a nearby area. We saw this place and decided to stop in for lunch. It definitely feels like a nicer place and the service was so friendly and prompt. Nice clean place including the restroom. We're not hunters but the pieces on the wall are impressive to say the least. Now for the amazing food. Our friend foolishly just ordered a burger with potatoes. Don't get me wrong, he loved it and ate every bite there. However, he did see the meatloaf sandwich and realized when he saw that on the menu he didn't put it together that it was a sandwich and not just meatloaf. After seeing that (and it did look terrific) he had some regrets. I got the nachos and was surprised how spicy they were. I enjoyed every bit of them, three times actually because yeah, their chips held up and there were that many toppings to go around too. It was massive and if not the biggest nacho I've had, for sure one of the top. The flavor was really good, but even I had regrets. Somehow they also have the most amazing Nashville hot chicken sandwich. It was a thing of beauty coming out. It was this huge glistening piece of crispy chicken. Not too spicy and had such a delicious flavor. It made our friend realize why I like honey with chicken, sweet and hot are a fantastic combo. He also went with the mac salad and I have to say it really took me back. The flavor reminded me of the mac salad my grandma used to make. She had a couple of differences, but that flavor, I haven't had that in decades now. So yeah, I was a little jealous I only got a taste of chicken and mac salad. Ambiance is fun and appropriate for the location. Servers were quite busy (holiday weekend) but friendly and helpful (if a bit forgetful). The food was ok. We ordered riverside taters that were pretty good. Nice and crispy, but could have used a little more seasoning imo. Served with not enough ranch. We each ordered a fried chicken sandwich and it was OVER fried. Either the oil was too hot or over-used. But the kicker, for me, was that the sandwich was huge, but once you cut into it, they had shaved down the chicken breast until it was about a half of an inch thick. It was disappointing. My side salad was overdressed. Hubs thought his salad was good. All the food appeared fresh and house made, so that is a plus. We could have just caught them on a bad day, but that thin ass chicken breast did it for me. Hubs was more upset about the cook on it. I'd try it again, but maybe not the chicken sandwich. This is the worst restaurant I have ever been to. First, my husband ordered a salad but he was served a head of lettuce with no dressing or anything on it. He was extremely disappointed and did not eat dinner. Second, my daughter ordered tater tots with her meal and they were undercooked, whole potatos. Very good restaurant in a remote location. You can sit outside with a nice view of the Deschutes. There is also bar and table seating indoors. The bar has 2 tv's. The menu is fairly extensive and includes a reasonably priced kids' menu. There is beer on tap -- probably about 6 different beers. The service was friendly and reasonably quick. The food was solid, if a bit heavy. The fried chicken sandwich was particularly big. Be warned that what they call "tater tots" on the menu are not what one would normally expect. They are rather roasted fingerling potatoes. They do not offer french fries or conventional tater tots, which made me think they don't have a deep fryer on the premises, but somehow they offer fried chicken. Went to Maupin for a couple days of R&R, and to go see some music at a new place in Maupin. It appears that most of the meats are made with a Traeger grill, which makes the place smell great. Tried the salad rolls with peanut sauce. Super good, and tasted fresh. Had the rib special, and the meat was perfect. The other side we had was the fingerling smashed potatoes. I didn't know what to expect, but they turned out great cause they weren't a fried with batter type of thing. Would definitely go back, was great having music in the back area. The staff all seemed like they got along, and that makes things welcoming, cause in small tourist towns, that can be a challenge. Virtually uncooked hamburger to go - had to throw it out it was like they just let it touch the grill for one sec and onto the bun. We did not order a rare burger. The potatoes they serve as fries are "meh." If you want burgers, go two doors down to Oasis Diner instead. MUCH better burgers and super yummy fries. If you do come to the Riverside, I'd say just stay away from the burgers and fries, don't expect anything great, and hopefully get lucky and get a seat on the outdoor deck. read more

Had an absolutely stellar fried chicken sandwich today - so good my wife and I both decided we were going to go back and get it again later this weekend. The blue cheese was fantastic, the pickles had great flavor (none of that basic run of the mill every day pickle stuff), the brioche/ciabatta bun was just right... I will say though, I'm a fan of hot sauce so I added that... And the "taters" were incredible - real potatoes fried up (not frozen reheats). I loved our waitress! She was so bubbly! Uh if only I remembered her name "/ The food was great. We stayed at the oasis next door and just walked over with a group of us for dinner. I had the burger with tater. I loved the tater by the way! So different from your usual typical places that offer tater. This was literally the baby finger potato as tater tots. The nachos was huge but heard it was good, the mac & cheese looked yummy. We also came the next morning before leaving to grab breakfast on our way back home. Love, love, loved my breakfast! Such a huge portion for a great cost. I had the English muffin which is not your typical size, there huge! With scrambled eggs, fried chicken breast which was seasoned and fried well!
