This was my first time seeing a show at this venue; honestly, I never knew it existed until I bought tickets to see KK's Priest, LA Guns, and Burning Witches. I purchased my tickets a little over a month ago when I found out KK added Mount Dora to one of their stops. Originally, I was planning on going to Fort Lauderdale to see them, but this worked out better because I was able to stay local during Bike Week. I am surprised the Mount Dora Community Building is hosting Metal shows since its more of an event center for plays and the seats are mounted to the floor, yet they had a good turn out and the crowd wasn't too out of control. The bands were fantastic, I couldn't have asked for a better evening. Although I came to see KK & Ripper Owen's, I was really looking forward to seeing the all-girl metal band from Sweden, Burning Witches. If you get a chance to see them while they are in the US, I highly recommend going. The venue seats about 600 patrons, most everyone has a good view of the stage in the seated position; during metal shows everyone stands, so good luck with visibility. Regardless, the acoustics here are excellent, and the audiovisual crew were exceptional. Security was a breeze, no pat downs, just ticket checks at the door. The show was supposed to start at 6:30pm, but we didn't even get in the door until almost 7:30pm. When we fist arrived staff were only serving beer, cash only, exact change, WTF!!?? After Burning Witches finished the bar had more change and a better variety of drinks to choose from including a small variety of liquor. I also noticed they started accepting credit cards. Get it together people this is a Metal Concert. The venue was very clean and overall, I was happy the event was here, but the restroom situation sucks, pretty much a line out the door most of the evening. You might be able to sneak in during a set if you're on an end seat, but good luck leaving and returning to your seat in the center of the row while the band is playing. I like the intimacy of venues like this because it is easy to just run into the performers and chat with them a bit. While I was here, I was able to meet Laura Guldemond, Romana Kalkuhl, and Jeanine Grob from Burning Witches. All-in-all, I had a great time and will definitely be back.

It originally sat along with its mirror image home built for Henry Herman Westinghouse, brother to inventor George Westinghouse adjacent to the Altamonte Hotel, which sat at the intersection of Maitland Avenue and State Road 436. This home was built during a surge in Central Florida tourism in the 1880's spurned by the connection of the South Florida Railroad from Sanford to Orlando. By 1886, there was direct rail service from the North to Central Florida bringing wealthy winter tourists to luxury homes and hotels. The Bradlee McIntyre house was owned by wealthy Boston architect Nathaniel J. Bradlee who was known for the Queen Anne style of architecture used to design this home and others in the area. Queen Anne hallmarks include the castle-like tower with a steep-angled gabled roof decorative accents. Nathaniel passed away shortly after the home's completion on December 17, 1888. The family continued to winter here until 1904 when they sold the house to S. Maxwell McIntyre who lived here with family until 1946. The Bradlee McIntyre home fell into disrepair in the 1960s. By 1969 the city was looking to tear it down. The Longwood Historical Society came to the rescue and moved the house to this current location where it was restored and furnished in the late Victorian Style. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Bradlee McIntyre House Historical Museum tours are every Wednesday and Sunday from 1-4 PM for a donation of $5. The home is rumored to be haunted with guests feeling a presence in certain rooms. If you would like to learn more about the supernatural you can take the Longwood Haunted History Tour where guests can learn about ghost stories involving the house. Winter Garden has truly come into its own as a community and is not just an outpost west of Orlando. This area is convenient to get to by Highway 408 or East Colonial Drive. They have a great farmers market here on Saturdays, which I would also recommend. Winter Garden has a lot of history here in central Florida, but we also must embrace the Winter Garden of today and where it is headed to in its tomorrows. The area is quaint and enjoyable. It is easy to see why it is so popular. Overall, I would definitely recommend here and I will give it a rating of five stars.

Alfred Rehbaum Sr. came to Mount Dora in 1915 from Cincinnati Ohio. He was hired at the age of 20 to run J.P. Donnelly's hardware store. Rehbaum eventually purchased the business designed in an Industrial Vernacular style and renamed it Rehbaum Hardware. The Rehbaum Hardware store was in operation from 1915 to 1984. The Rehbaum Warehouse stood on this site from 1927 until 2019. Well know for their warehouse the Rehbaum family was also respected their civic service. Alfred Rehbaum Sr. was one of eight founding members of the Mount Dora Development Company. He was elected school board trustee and became the president of the Chamber of Commerce in 1925. He also served several terms on the City Council. Rehbaum Hardware was a three generation family business. Alfred Rehbaum Jr. joined the business after returning home from WWII. His son Alfred "Sonny" Rehbaum III started working at the hardware store in 1950 at the age of 11. He was also very civic minded and served on the city council and was a founding member of the agency in charge of revitalizing downtown Mount Dora. After 44 years he sold the family business in 1994 and retired. He died the next year of a heart attack while changing a tire. There are now plans by the CFL Property Group to add retail space offices where the hardware store once stood. It's ironic the the groundwork Sonny Laius down during his lifetime to redevelop his beloved town was what led to the demolition of his former family business.

There are a lot of reasons to go to the Eustis Square Shopping Center, though I have to say I…read moremostly go for just two reasons. One is the Save a Lot store, and the other is one of our favorite restaurants, the New China Buffet. But there is also a Family Dollar, though I use one right near my house, and a Bealls Outlet, which I occasionally go into but mostly I get clothes at thrift stores. A newer addition is the Treasure Mart flea market. It is an interesting place to check out, though as yet we haven't bought anything there yet. But it is a fair replacement for the Goodwill store that moved out. There are a few other small businesses, but I will let you discover them for yourself. Also, a couple of free standing buildings nearby contain a McDonald's and a Planet Fitness.

My father was a producer for Empire Studios (NY & FL) that made it. I was a young boy then but went on location several times and saw the filming. I have the original script, on location 8x10 pictures, and a VCR copy of the film I bought many years ago. Having grown up in Orlando, I don't remember this topic in any Florida history class, maybe it was paragraph of two but having learned the history the way I did, I would have recognized it. It wasn't a big movie but Floridians appreciated it. It was made in color which was rare at that time. Local High school boys skipped school to be extras and play Indian or soldier roles, my father later told me. I was there when the massacre scenes were shot and remember the loudness of the canon and rifles. Actors in the movie were public-known but not as well as Clark Gable types. The movie ran 90 minutes. I'll copy my VCR to CD so it can last a while longer. For history buffs, it's worth looking for online.
