The thrift store/junk shop fan in me loves Hackensack Record King. Just remember, you aren't walking into F.Y.E., where everything is meticulously indexed and in order. It's more like general areas in the store. It drives my boyfriend crazy, but I'm fine with it. You just need to dig a little deeper through everything to find treasures. Also, you'll need some Purell after you are done (it's a little dusty in there), but there is a pay off. You will not find these 45s or records at other places. Hackensack Record King is a one-of-a-kind record shop and worth a visit. The man who rang us up was friendly and chatted us up while we were at the register (there was a pretty cool DEVO discussion). Aside from records, there was also a small shelf of DVDs where I found some goodies that I took home with me. Lastly, there is metered parking on the street if you drive there... Again, worth a visit!

Not easy to search through or get around but it's all about the dig. Pretty well organized as far as genre. I knocked a few things off my want list. Prices were pretty reasonable for the most part. I later found out there was a documentary about the store so I watched that and now I'm even more glad I stopped in. Seems like the store isn't doing great at the moment. I would hate to see it close so I will be making this a regular stop. If you're an old school collector, you'll enjoy it.

The prices seemed high for playable records, I saw nothing under $20. All too many of the covers were badly worn or the records scratched, for these prices I think an album should be pretty outside & unscratched inside. Not everything is overpriced, there's also an enormous section of $1 albums, completely unsorted. The center rack is sorted by artist with sections for rock/pop, jazz and hard rock. But it's tough to get to that rack, all aisles are hopelessly cluttered with boxes of unsorted vinyl, packed so full that you cannot get past other people, stacked so tightly that you cannot reach the racks to flip thru, it's just unpleasant. If you're patient you may indeed find something you'll treasure. I bought a playable, non-collectible pressing of a 1985 rock album for $20, that was about the same as the fleabay price but here it was instant gratification and support of a local business. I was surprised this music business couldn't bother to play interesting tunes on a decent sound system, here it's just staticky radio through cheap speakers, meh.

Was in the area and had some free time. Googled record stores in the area and came across this…read moreplace about 20 minutes away. Let's go! Found the store without a problem but parking is ridiculous. Not the stores fault. Upon entering the store you have to be amazed at the sheer volume of merchandise. Stacks and stacks of dvds and records. One small area is semi organized otherwise good luck. Count Basie mixed in with NY Dolls with Stevie Wonder behind Roy Acuff. Good luck. Spent about an hour going through the rows and found a few albums that I don't have. Nice! Some albums were priced, most aren't. When I asked the owner he said just give them to me and I'll work up a price. Not the way I like buying a bunch of records but I gave him about 8 or 9 to see where they were in pricing. (The priced albums were about what you'd expect to see). He then prices them based off of eBays listings. Not even sold listings but what people are asking. Albums that should be in the 3-5.00 range 15. Others that should be in the 8-10.00 range 25. Nope. I asked for the stack back and started putting them back where I found them. He realizes what I'm doing and wants to play lets make a deal. Instead of 25 for that, how about 20? How about 18? Sorry. I don't mind spending money, but I don't play this kind of stupid game at a register. I left empty handed. Do not see myself going back.

Very fun to spend an hour or two browsing. Ya never know what you might find in that next row of albums! Also, this store participates in Record Store Day! I'd recommend making it one of your first stops if you're in northern Jersey and looking to participate in the festivities! They seem to always have at least one copy of every major release coming out.
