Matalan itself is pretty reasonable when it comes to prices but this place is amazingly cheap! There is a wide range of clothes here - ladies and mens clothing as well as childrens, shoes, underwear and some (not much) homeware. It's all stock from previous (and occassionally current) seasons that they now wish to get rid of. There are no changing room so my tip is to wear a vest that you can try things on over (there are mirrors) and a skirt so you can try trousers/skirts on underneath! It's pretty basic but worth the rummage and lack of changing rooms for the prices. They often have special deals on - I went recently and it was buy one get one free. I bought a really nice shirtdress and a lovely silk top which were £6 each. This came to a total of £6 for the two items - that's £3 each wow! My friends and I have come out with bags of stuff from here - it's a real pot luck but on a good day you won't believe what you can get. I love it!

Ah, the heady smell of Amyl Nitrate! Nasty! There's something I'm less sure about... Does Beverley, the owner, know about this other meaning? I guess not, but I can imagine that she'd find it amusing, like myself. Beverley Soar is as laid back as any of the business owners on Pontcanna Street., and she's got a sense of humour. When I called in recently she was inspecting the damage done to the huge plate glass window that fronts the shop. The phantom tagger had paid her, (and everyone else down the street), a visit, leaving their tag, or signature mark, etched in the glass. The damage to all was going to cost the insurers a small fortune. Beverley was taking it in her stride, and seemed surprisingly up-beat, considering the disruption and mess that the repair would cause. She owns a particularly beautiful shop with some pretty expensive stock.... clothes by Grea, Annette Gortz, Hebbeding, Indies, Krines, Ischiko, Sonja Marohn and Oska... and I haven't met a tradesman yet that doesn't move everything so that you can't find it, and leave dusty footprints in the carpet! I guess she just reconciles herself with the knowledge that if it needs to be done, it needs to be done, and that's that! I like Beverley as much as I like her shop. The street wouldn't be the same without them both. With customers ranging from their mid thirties, up into their nineties, (her oldest customer is a very well dressed 96 year old, who has lost none of her sophistication and sartorial taste with the passage of time), Poppers is responsible for some of the best dressed women in Cardiff!

Poppers is probably more suitable for 45+ (I won't be falling into that category for a long while yet), but it did have some very stylish numbers and on the sales rack I spotted a rather nice urban style top reduced to £20 (not bad)! Poppers also stocks a small range of jewellery and bags but at £54 for a necklace, it certainly isn't cheap!

I believe they may be end of lines but you can definitely grab a bargain. The trick is to have the time to spend looking through the rails. The clothes are arranged in size order and genre only e.g. Large T-Shirts, Small T-Shirts etc, but are not easy to pick out items. In Newport the store is a good size, and they tend to have a wide choice of homeware and gifts. The staff are friendly on most occasions, but it wouldn't hurt for some of them to break out into a smile now and again.

If you can, head over to the Primark in Cardiff as there's a much wider selection. ~ Atmosphere: The main downer for me - this Primark is always so crowded. Because it's relatively small, just a couple of people in there makes it really hectic and not a comfortable shopping experience at all. Plus, the decor is more department store than anything else. ~ Customer Service: Standard for a Primark. The employees here aren't really fashion gurus, but they're quite efficient with the cash register and take care of long queues quickly so you're in and out. ~ Variety: Another downside. You have some general items you can find and what they have is great - there's probably plenty of stuff in here that you would want to get. However, like I said it's quite a small store so browsing is limited. If you're looking for something specific, for example, like work clothes, you might only be able to shop from a tiny section. --- Overall, I do like Primark. You can find mens wear, womens, children and babies, night wear, bags, shoes, homeware all at extremely good prices for what you are getting. The store I find tends to be messy, and full of hustle and bustle and I don't just mean all the people in the stores. All the clothes seem so busy, nothing in any sort of order, thrown all over the floor, the whole store basically looks cheap. I don't buy clothes for myself in there apart from vests in the summer, I tend to buy my twins tracksuit bottoms for round the house or myself some socks for these cold winter nights. The business of Primark stores are bad enough at the best of times, but when it comes to Christmas it is an absolute nightmare !!! This is a store I'd reccomend for complete bargains, but no quality. O.K so it's cheap in there, but the quality of clothing etc is terrible most of the time. For example, I bought a few winter tops for my boys to keep them warm, but they are so thin they could be used for the summer.But like I said I don't argue because of the price! This store sort of reminds me of one of them stalls you find down your local market, with your cheap 'market stall' clothing. Staff I havn't found too helpful, but then I don't think I would want to really be helpful if I was standing there watching people rush around the store like theres no tomorrow launching the stock all over the floor.
