When I first arrived at the Putney School, I was 16, shy, scared out of my mind, and unsure of myself. I have a hard time making friends, and that added to the nerves arriving at a new school, let alone leaving my parents and flying across the country to boarding school. Suffice to say, Putney terrified me.
A little background information: I hated my old school in my hometown. I was searching for somewhere that would be inclusive, with people who are friendly, enthusiastic about learning and ready to challenge themselves.
I found exactly this at the Putney school. I was able to grow into a young adult here and I am proud of who I am. I found friends I know I will keep for a lifetime, my classmates are friendly, and people reach out to one another. This school is not about "prodigies" or finding the best talents, putting them on display, and neglecting everyone else. No, that was my old school. At Putney, everyone is encouraged to grow. We are pushed to our limits, whether it be in blacksmithing, acting, writing, drawing, academic work, you name it.
Its hard for me, someone who came in so unsure of herself, so beaten down by the life I used to live, to read negative reviews about Putney. Its true, there are some people who don't find their way here, but thats not because the school is flawed. Its because the student and the school simply were not a good fit. I'd like to stress that while there are always some students who find it harder to feel comfortable in such a situation as living away from home at Putney, that the mass majority of students love Putney.
I love Putney, and I can say as a senior about to graduate, I will never forget this experience, and I am so appreciative to the growth Putney has allowed me. read more
