Lazy lunch with buddies.
David D.

I will give it a solid 4. For the British authenticity and cheerfulness of the staff. Had steak & kidney pie with mushy peas and mashed potatoes. Friends had wings and club sandwich. All good, including the cask ale. Why go to a mundane chain pub when there are places like this ? Thank you Yelp, would not have found The Poacher otherwise.

Unprofessional and Discriminatory Behavior by Bar Staff…read more In Canada, you have the right to be free from discrimination in public places, including restaurants. I believe that our city has the potential to be a welcoming and inclusive place for all. I recently visited The Dickens and had a very disappointing experience, and I believe it is important to address this matter to ensure it does not happen to others. During my visit, I observed the bar staff member, taking multiple shots of alcohol while on duty. This unprofessional behavior was concerning enough, but what made the situation worse was the discriminatory treatment I received. Despite my attempts to order, I was repeatedly ignored by the staff members, while other patrons were served promptly. I believe the lack of service I received was due to discrimination, which is completely unacceptable. I got a dirty look from one of the female staff members, a short blond, while having a discussion, huddled with the other bar staff members. That's when the dark haired female staff member walked up to me and said they are denying me of service, with no explanation. This left me feeling unwelcomed, hurt, and discriminated against. To address the issue, I called the restaurant to speak to the manager. Unfortunately, I was met with rudeness and was unable to properly discuss my concerns. When I asked for the managers email, I was speedily told and then abruptly hung up on. Such behavior reflects poorly on the establishment and raises serious concerns about its commitment to treating all customers fairly and respectfully. I expect The Dickens takes this feedback seriously and implements necessary changes and addresses these issues to ensure a professional, welcoming and inclusive environment for all customers. I hope that this incident does not reflect the values of your establishment. Racism is subtle these days, existing in locations where it is difficult to see because it is viewed as a social taboo. I found it at the restaurant, but I'm not sure where else it may be. I didn't realize that racism still exists in some places. Until I saw it in front of my eyes. Black consumers had to wait longer than white customers and were refused service.

You walk in and are transported to the UK with the decor…read more I rated this pub 3 stars because it is okay. It is not the best British pub I have been to locally and it isn't the worst. You will get an okay meal with decent service here. He had the bangers and mash and I had the roasted beet and goat cheese salad. While my salad was pretty good, the bangers and mash were the okay part...which should not have been the case in a British pub. The service was pretty decent. I would return if in the area and was craving this type of food to give it another shot.

I use to recommend this Pub, not the case anymore unfortunately…read more The price of a basket of sweet potato fries runs for $15.00. Talk about sticker price shock! Recently I went if for a quick beverage and overheard rave reviews for their $18.00 burger. There may have been a side but I wasn't interested. I told the bartender I wasn't interested in a side. The burger was expensive enough, I had salad at home. He persisted, convinced me there wouldn't be a charge. I ordered it to go. After paying the bill i notice a 'side' charge. I brought it up to the bartender. I just wanted the hamburger! What part of that 'repeated' statement did he not get? His response was cavalier & dismissive. 'Oh well, can't do anything about it now, you've already paid!' I get home to find an overcooked, dry $20.00 something hamburger. Some things you let slide. Not this $20 something hamburger & a side of 'I could care less'. I left a message for the manager that evening, explaining what happened. Never heard from them again. This isn't the first time I've had an unpleasant experience. One bartender pressured me to give him more (grats) money because he let me 'taste' a beverage or two. He was inebriated. Someone should be paying attention to this. Management certainly doesn't seem to. Shame, I liked the place and most of the staff.
