Unprofessional and Discriminatory Behavior by Bar Staff. In Canada, you have the right to be free from discrimination in public places, including restaurants. I believe that our city has the potential to be a welcoming and inclusive place for all. I recently visited The Dickens and had a very disappointing experience, and I believe it is important to address this matter to ensure it does not happen to others. During my visit, I observed the bar staff member, taking multiple shots of alcohol while on duty. This unprofessional behavior was concerning enough, but what made the situation worse was the discriminatory treatment I received. Despite my attempts to order, I was repeatedly ignored by the staff members, while other patrons were served promptly. I believe the lack of service I received was due to discrimination, which is completely unacceptable. I got a dirty look from one of the female staff members, a short blond, while having a discussion, huddled with the other bar staff members. That's when the dark haired female staff member walked up to me and said they are denying me of service, with no explanation. This left me feeling unwelcomed, hurt, and discriminated against. To address the issue, I called the restaurant to speak to the manager. Unfortunately, I was met with rudeness and was unable to properly discuss my concerns. When I asked for the managers email, I was speedily told and then abruptly hung up on. Such behavior reflects poorly on the establishment and raises serious concerns about its commitment to treating all customers fairly and respectfully. I expect The Dickens takes this feedback seriously and implements necessary changes and addresses these issues to ensure a professional, welcoming and inclusive environment for all customers. I hope that this incident does not reflect the values of your establishment. Racism is subtle these days, existing in locations where it is difficult to see because it is viewed as a social taboo. I found it at the restaurant, but I'm not sure where else it may be. I didn't realize that racism still exists in some places. Until I saw it in front of my eyes. American dude writing a review! I stopped in pretty late night soon after checking into a hotel nearby. Thank goodness for free Wi-Fi because that's how I found out about this pub with live music. Had I stopped to have a conversation with locals or gas station attendants for local hotspots, I may have been sent other places that may not have been as nice. I don't get the low star rating which is somewhere around a two star presently. I mean, I do and I don't. For one thing, it's got a setup like an English pub mainly because of it's naming which is after the famous writer Charles Dicken's. But one wouldn't guess that by any of their decor within a sole visit, this is a clarification I came across when scoping their website much later after my first visit. The pub has some history dating back to the mid 1800's. Their website gives tribute and recollection to those that lived within these walls and called it home. The draw for the pub is nightly live music provided by bands which change up night to night. While they maintain a decent website, it doesn't seem to contain the most up to date information. So, if you'd like to see a band lineup, it's best to call in or visit the pub. Most Americans traveling further than closer to the border would be unaware to the fact that in Canada they consider nineteen years of age an adult with the ability to consume alcohol. For this reason solely explains why in much of Canada you can expect to see far more women than in some bars in the States. Back home in Chicago, I'm all too used to the term "chorizo parties" which has become a label for bars and clubs which are inundated with higher male to female ratios. Any who. Another note to my American peoples; booze is pricey everywhere in Canada and in some cases the charges are double what we pay back in the States. Service, offering and some very minute difference in cost is what differs from one bar or club to the other. I ordered a shot of Jamo (That's Jameson's whiskey) which cost about seven and half Ca dollars. I paid about the same for a Coors light. The bartender which waited on us, could have been nicer. Despite our good tipping, I'm not sure if she smiled once. Perhaps tourists get a cold shoulder? I don't know. The door guys seemed nicer. Among looks from the locals, it seemed kind of cold in there. Except for sharing the routine head nods of acknowledgement from other male patrons in the bar. The bar has a nice setup if in fact the website is correct and the accents of the bar have been the same in place since the time of it's creation. It's held up well. I can't remember the name of the band that played last Friday but I thought they did a good job. They sang popular rock hits from the 1990's to stuff which is current. After a couple of beers and shots in the belly, we headed down the street for more touristy exploration. If I were in the area again, I would probably stop by again to hear the music happening. The place is soundproofed pretty well, because one would have to be within a short relative space to hear the music playing live within. read more

Fantastic food and wonderful service! I had the honey chicken club which is my new favourite sandwich. My husband has food allergies and they were great at making sure everything was just right for him! Can't wait to get this food again on our next takeout order. read more

I have been to the Dicken's on about five occasions, mostly during the summer and once during early spring. During the summer, the patio can get busy and they do have live music outside too so be prepared for higher noise levels then. For service, it all depends on your waitress, just like anywhere else. I have had some who were super fast and helpful and others who didn't want to be there. What keeps me coming back is the food, their wings are fantastic - Big, meaty and with a lot of quality sauce. They have ancho pepper ketchup for their fries which I have yet to have anywhere else and is amazing. I also had a sausage sampler once which was a lot of food and not too bad. They have decent beer choices but I love their ciders and they have happy hour specials often. It is my go-to bar when in the area when I want wings and cider. read more

My girlfriend and I stopped in on a weeknight and sat ourselves on the patio and were ignored for at least 20 minutes. Then were served lukewarm beer and possibly the worst nachos I've ever eaten. The fried pickles were obviously frozen. Not going back. read more

Went to the Dickens Pub last night as I live close by and have been always loved going there for music and fun. I was happy to know they had live music and we were able to reserve a table. My friend and I ordered a couple of tequila shots and a beer along with a side of fish n chips each. The band was playing some good music and I was dancing in my seat, so happy to be listening to live music and being able to enjoy some sort of normalcy. I respected the protocols, did not get up to dance just waved my hands and swayed to the music. Some woo hoos were thrown in there also. When the waiter came around again, I asked for another round of tequilas and he refused to serve me - just me. He said that the manager suggested I be cut off from alcohol based on my behavior. I could not believe my ears. I asked to speak to the manager and she came over. I asked her what I was doing that would make her come to that conclusion. She said "just the way you are behaving". I am a very lively person and I enjoy myself especially when I am hearing music. I can handle a shot of whiskey and my friend was also defending my position. The manager completely misread me, misjudged me, embarrassed me in front of other clientele and argued that because I was defending myself it showed that she had made the right call. I have been there several times pre Covid and danced my butt off all night on the dance floor, jumping and hollering and NO ONE ever approached me. Is this the world we live in now or is this manager just a prude b*tch? I did not break any rules, I was not being disrespectful to anyone, I was simply enjoying a meal with a few drinks and wiggling in my seat. I will NEVER go to the Dickens again and if you plan on going there during this pandemic, make sure you are not going there to have fun because you will be kicked out! After I wrote this review I called the manager to speak with her and she hung up the phone after she told me how she appreciated my feedback and had nothing else to say to me. read more

Fun place to go if you're into the olde English pub style, complete with the velvet lined banquettes and old school painted signs and bar stools. Gets pretty rowdy on weekends but you may see tumbleweeds on a weeknight. They have live music on some nights which is always a good time, espcially TNBT - the best thing to ever happen to The Dickens. I used to go and drink here all the time but have since moved on. Now it is inundated with teens who think they're so tough they're coming out of their shirts (their ed hardy shirts at that, hahaha). You may even catch the odd fist pump. When you need bouncers at an English style pub that should be an indication of too much machismo. In short, too much testosterone these days and not enough of them lovely lady lumps. Who wants to go to a sausage party when there are no buns? Where am I gonna put the mustard? I'll give it 3 stars for the past but I don't know if I can say the same for the future. Intimate setting, invites frat house kind of crowds. Washrooms are up on the second floor, so probably not very friendly to people with mobility issues. Has karaoke Thursday nights. It wasn't my thing, but some people really seemed to have a lot of fun. I was disappointed that although our table was right in front of the bar and in the busy area, the waitress ignored us for over 20 minutes, passing by and serving other tables with people she knew, dancing to several songs... So we ended up picking up a drink from the bar and leaving shortly after. read more

My first review. Service was so poor and food just so-so, so I had to leave a comment. Four friends and I went for breakfast on a Sunday morning. Our service took a long time and was lacklustre at best. We waited 20 minutes to order and there were about as many servers as tables with customers, so that was a little frustrating. The food wasn't terrible, but the coffee was probably the worst I've ever had. I am a huge coffee drinker and am not picky in the least (I'll drink it all) but this was the first time I was unable to finish a cup of coffee because it was just so terrible. We all had different opinions on what the coffee tasted like - from hazelnut to BBQ sauce, but the consensus was that it wasn't coffee. Milk and sugar did not help. Within two hours of eating breakfast there, four out of five of us had really upset stomaches. Between the slow, unfriendly service and unexceptional food (that may have left our tummys grumbling) there is no way I am going back. read more

First off, this place is pretty average. Not great, but certainly not bad. Service was slow because they don't have enough people working there. The waitresses themselves were great, just way too busy. We had nachos, which is generally a good 'trial' food for a new pub because it's hard to screw up and there can be quite a bit of variety. Good: - lots of toppings - beef is seasoned perfectly Bad: - has gross US-style 'cheese sauce' as well as normal shredded cheese - chips were overdone (which is easy to do in the deep fryer, apps guy has to pay attention!) - onions were raw (onions can go on while it's toasted in the giant toaster oven they use, makes them way better) - lettuce wasn't cut into small enough pieces, so it was a bit awkward. They have a good selection of import beers, which seems to be standard for Burlington. Beer prices were average for Euro imports. These are all minor complaints, the biggest problem was just that there were lots of people there and it was slow. People there can be kinda skeezy too, but that was probably just the time we went so can't fault them for that. Overall, meh, might go back with buddies, but otherwise it's pretty average. read more

I am a 26 year old attractive female. I worked in the restaurant and customer service industry for years. I visit the dickens with friends on weekend evenings as we enjoy the pub atmosphere and live bands. I forgot my credit card at the bar one evening and I called and the server said it was at the bar. I enter the Dickens at 2pm on a Saturday afternoon and there was maybe 5 tables and one gentleman at the bar (quiet and slow). I immediately informed the server in a pleasant manner that I was only here to pick up my credit card. She tried to brush me off and said you'll have to wait. She proceeded to do rounds and checks and take overs for all of her tables while she ignores me. I wait for 10 minutes. I understand that you have duties and obligations to your customers but I also think of time for task completion. It will only take you 3 seconds to pass me my credit card from behind the bar but you find it more appropriate to do EVERYTHING else you could possible do before you service me. I question if I was a business man as opposed to a pretty blonde if my service experience would have been different? I continue to wait when to my excitement another bar tender emerges at the bar! I politely inform her that I just need to simply pick up my credit card. She looks at me says okay and then once again serves the only man at the bar. Not only did she ask him if he wanted his bill, she gave it to him, waited for the money, made his change and THEN went back to servicing my request. I waited for about 20 minutes so someone could pass me my card. They literally keep them above the cash register at the bar- I was staring at it the whole tme. I was very disheartened as I felt it was the case of that they just had the power in the situation and no consideration for customer service. read more

Seriously, how does a pub say "uh no" when asked if they can turn the volume on the tv for a hockey game that's already playing? Is this not a pub? Literally, there were no customers in the entire place. PS. came here one time before and the food was very bland. So, not a very pub like atmosphere and also, bland food. Great local casual spot any day of the week. Patio is great, could use some casual lighting and decor. Great, tasty, food specials 1/2 price flat bread. Steak flat bread and smoked salmon flatbread were a level above standard pub fare! Live music, bonus. Food was awesome, patio service quick and friendly. Great atmosphere and location.
