I had the Melba crème brulé for dessert, it was nice but I think I prefer my creme brulé as just that rather than with an added layer of sponge as this had. A quaint English Pub backing up along the River of Tyne. This original Pub has stood since 1800, and has kept its rural charm and rustic character. I tried all of their local Ales, and all equally tasty. The food, while plain and simple, is just what is needed to satisfy the hunger brought on from the brisk fresh air of the country side. I did also notice that this is quite the hideaway for the local beauties, and as my roaming eye wondered, I found myself enjoying ALL of the local attractions.

A tricky entrance to the car park immediately after a small bridge that crosses the river, very easy to drive passed. The car park isn't huge for such a big venue, so spaces can be at a premium, with most adjoining the river. The Spread Eagle has a sizeable area of outdoor seating, which has a great atmosphere on a lazy summer's evening. Inside a huge and well stocked bar, and a downstairs suited for both drinking and dining. I like the atmosphere in here, the locals are friendly, the building has a character all of its own, and the tables suit all sizes of party, with lots of nooks and crannies, that only an old building has. We usually come here to dine, and the menu has good variety, if a little formulaic. Starters include sharing platters, calamari, cured salmon etc. On our most recent visit, we went for the main/dessert option; a good variety of mains like pork belly, steaks, fish and chips etc. We opted for a Chicken, Ham and Leek Pie, tasty and a hearty sized portion, and a Wild Boar and Chorizo burger, dressed with fresh lettuce and tomato, with a smoky sauce, a great combination, but the fries that accompanied it weren't as good as I remembered. Slightly bizarrely though, if you want any other type of sauce with your dinner, they arrive with a selection of pots, you put in on your dinner, while they wait to take it away again, an odd system! Desserts wise, a good variety of classic dishes, like Eton Mess, Crème Brûlée; we went for the Apple Galette, tasty enough, nothing ground-breaking, and the Ultimate Chocolate Brownie Tower, sounded and looked great, sadly a little dry and lacking flavour. So in summary, great location, friendly atmosphere, helpful staff, average food. A solid three, but it has earned an extra star, for being an oasis in a proverbial storm. A few years ago, our area suffered considerable flooding, it took us four hours to travel four miles, due to gridlock traffic. Being thoroughly teed off, we made it to the Spread Eagle, had a wonderful meal, and by the time we left, the traffic had cleared and we travelled home in less than 25 minutes!
