Now that the CV-Link bike trail has been installed to Thermal (starts at Washington in LaQuinta), my buddy and I thought we'd ride to Mecca, since it is on the cusp of the Salton Sea and is an access point for some popular hiking trails. We were thrilled to find The Plaza restaurant, which has a diverse surf and turf menu of popular Mexican dishes. We were greeted when we came in and had fast, efficient, and friendly table service. There's plenty of indoor restaurant-style seating with a few booths. My buddy opted for the tacos - cabeza, asada, al pastor, and carnitas, and noted that the al pastor was some of the best he's had. While I found many options on the menu, I couldn't pass up the lengua plate since it's a rare that I can find it plated, even at shops that serve lengua tacos. Everything was delicious and perfectly seasoned, right down to the handmade corn tortillas which have a superior flavor and texture as compared to mass-produced tortillas. The house salsas were excellent - a chili-based picante salsa roja, and a mild tomatillo salsa verde which was delicious with a flavor of fresh garlic. They had the typical bottled beers you'd expect (Modelo, Pacifico, Corona, Ultra) as well as bottled Coca Cola. We will definitely be back the next time we visit the area. This is a working-class town that supports the local agricultural industries, and the prices at The Plaza Restaurant are very affordable.

Found this place after a day of hiking. The guacamole was fresh and the burrito was delicious. I will be back to eat here soon!

I tried a mix of things: 3 mulitas (cheese and birria), plus some pastor and asada tacos. Overall,…read morethe food was decent, but a few things held it back from being "really good." The mulitas had solid flavor, especially the birria, but they definitely needed more cilantro and onion to balance everything out. One thing that bothered me was how the tortillas were cut -- it made it hard to actually add salsa and have it stay inside, which kind of took away from the experience. As for the pastor and asada tacos, they were just "okay." Nothing bad, but nothing that really stood out either. They had a red spicy salsa and a green mild salsa and that was it as far as options that you can add in your own. There were no cabbage, radish, and other important ingredients that make a taco reach another level. I did like the decorations and music they had playing. It goes well with a mexican restaurant. The service was excellent. The guy that helped me explained the menu very well and said that he could tweak a few things to accommodate what I was asking for. He also did well checking in on us. So yeah, it lands in that middle zone -- "It's okay" with some potential to be "good." If they tweak a few things (especially toppings and tortilla setup), this place could easily move up a full star for me.

We were passing by the area for Joshua Tree and wanted to share a burrito for a post hike snack. We…read morechose this place because the reviews were raving about how good the food here was and how the burritos were comparable/even better than LA ones! We were skeptical but wanted to try it out nonetheless. The spot is located in a Mexican grocery store and all the workers were really nice. We ordered on a touch screen thing and the food came out in like 10 minutes. We ordered an Al pastor burrito with sour cream to share and holy heck it was amazing. The Al pastor wasn't too oily (which others tend to be), the rice and refried beans were flavorful, and they put a bunch of cheese and onions which I loved. The burrito was pretty sizeable. After a long hike, the shared burrito satiated both of us to the point of not feeling hungry or overly full, a pretty good balance. We're from the Bay and frequent LA often, but I'd definitely rank this burrito on my top 5 just because it was perfect for me (I love cheese and onions and Al pastor). I'm excited to come back here for my next JT trip :)

I ordered the three rolled tacos with rice and beans. Love the fresh guacamole, lettuce, tomato's & cotija cheese on top! The menu includes the following: tacos, burritos, tortas, quesadillas, enchiladas, tostadas, nachos, asada fries, combo plates, family pack (includes one pound meat, rice, beans, onion, cilantro, red or green salsa, flour or corn tortillas and liter of soda), catering (five or ten pounds of meat), breakfast plates and burritos. Meats to choose from: asada, pollo, alpastor, carnitas, deshebrada, lengua, tripa and buche. Nice, friendly, employees, great food, plenty of parking out front and in the back. Note; inside is a small seating area, however you can get it to go. Wish they were closer so I could visit more often!
