The Place is a three storey hotel located on York Place, a prime central Edinburgh location. Within easy walking distance of the many restaurants, delis and independent coffee shops of New Town in one direction, and Princes Street and its multitude of large shops in the other. The Scottish National Gallery is just up the road, which not only has wonderful displays of contemporary art, but a coffee shop attached that has some truly fantastic home-made lunches and cakes.
We have visited here on two occasions, once in the summer and once in the autumn for a family wedding. The first time, we had a standard double on the third floor, a decent climb every time up the stairs (be warned, the Place has no lift!). A cosy room with a magnificent view of the Edinburgh skyline, with a decent sized bathroom, but overall the room was a little small for an extended stay. The second time, we deliberately booked a bigger room, so we could accommodate visitors, as we were preparing for a wedding. This room was huge, a big bathroom, a queen sized bed and the biggest TV I've seen in a hotel. Only one minor gripe, the water into the bath was at best lukewarm, no matter what we did with the taps.
Downstairs there was a sizeable bar area, with a well stocked bar, a very comfortable place to have a coffee or a drink, before going out for a meal in the evening. Adjacent to that is the breakfast area, with breakfast being about £10 per head: a great selection of fruit, pastries and cereals, and a very tasty serve yourself full Scottish breakfast. The toast was a bit of a right off though, the grill was so hot it carbonised the bread, and standing next to it, you felt you were getting a free tan at the same time!
The staff at the Place are all very helpful, be it booking a room or a meal, asking for information or storing our luggage temporarily while we waited for a later train. Try taking a picture of the patterned wallpaper in the reception, a great optical illusion! read more
