When all you seem to hear these days is news of pubs closing down, it was both a relief and with massive excitement last year to learn that Manchester was getting a new one.
And not an old, derelict building being turned back into a boozer, but a brand new, hand-built pub, to be created with help from community volunteers.
So after what seems like many months of anticipation, much toil (by the project team) and lots of interesting workshops to get involved with (from gathering willow in a Stockport country park to use for hanging baskets, to creating ceramic tiles for the bar or spinning wood for the stools), The Pilcrow Pub opened its doors at last.
It's truly a sleek, eye catching design, from outside and in, nestled snuggly within the newish city square of Sadler's Yard - so it has masses of outside space for when summer returns again.
The wooden-clad building, which looks rather Scandi-inspired to me, really feels cosy inside thanks to lots of natural materials being used, for the seating, shelving and even the tap handles behind the bar.
The beer list totals some 17 varieties, and local brewery Cloudwater will be running things along with the owner of Northern Quarter bars Common and Port Street Beer House. Expect regular rotation of seasonal offerings.
Massive pats-on-backs to the team behind this - it's a unique and super stylish addition to the city centre and one I'll certainly continue to support with my beer fund! read more
