Overall I like Spruce Tree music, but one must be aware that this store has its limitations…read more Visit this store if: - you already have experience with an instrument and are looking to purchase a high quality instrument - you are a beginner willing to invest in a high quality instrument - you are looking to refurbish an instrument and want a very honest answer whether it's worth the investment in terms of resale value Do not visit this store if: - you are not ready to invest a significant amount of money into an instrument - you are looking to get by on what you already own - you are looking to refurbish an instrument with sentimental value that may not be of high quality I've had good experiences coming in for guitar accessories. The gentleman who runs the shop is exceptionally knowledgable and has always made excellent recommendations. The woman behind the counter can be very pompous at times, but the good outweighed the bad in this case. On the other hand, I wanted a little bit of work done on an old violin I picked up cheap, just enough to get by while I learn the very basics and how to care for a violin. I'm not quite ready to invest in a good instrument for fear of harming it out of sheer ignorance. This store is not the place to go for "good enough". I understand the luthier wants to take pride in his work and to him that means all or nothing.

A highly specific Madison institution. It hasnt changed much since I was a kid…read more It's a music store, but a very very specific music store. They deal almost exclusively in high end acoustic string instruments and their repair. It's not where I would go to buy a beginner to intermediate instrument. They have only a very small number of electric guitars/basses/etc, and NO non-string instruments. I am sure they can repair any stringed instrument, but I wouldnt take anything there that's not high end. They will probably tell you why it's not worth repairing, or that they dont have the time. That said, you'd be hard pressed to find anyone more knowledgeable, and they are more than willing to share their knowledge. Last time I brought something in for repair I got a 30 minute class on what he knew about it, what he didnt know about it, why he wasnt willing to take on the repair, and what my next steps were. They are also more than welcome to allow you to try any of the for sale instruments whether you are in the market or not. Someone else mentioned the dogs-- I didnt see them last time I was in but I remember that. Personally I like shops that have pets, although I am not allergic.

They seem to have a wide selection, though I'm not sure what the difference is between different reeds. I'm just learning the clarinet and saxophone and went with the cheapest ones I could find anywhere - so I did the same with reeds. But it definitely seems like the sort of place a serious musician could get a much nicer saxophone or clarinet. The staff were helpful and able to find what I needed pretty fast despite how disheveled I tend to look when I have to be outside in this heat. Can't speak for any of their services except their customer service while trying to find the correct reeds out of a shelf that was visible right from when I walked in the door. Probably the best place to put the reeds/strings/etc - nobody likes having to replace their reeds or strings lmfao. Guitar center does the opposite and puts them so far back in the store that it takes some real work to find it. I like this store better.

Another week goes by and I finally get it and the neck is so warped its unplayable. Johnathan had told me he went over the guitar before he shipped it. I would of liked to ad a picture of how bad this neck was. No offer to replace the guitar or apology for waisting my time. I can not leave a good review for this kind of business and I would not recommend this place.

With that said I spoke to a Quinten (I hope I spelt that right lol) and he was fantastic on answering all of my questions about the specific gig bar I was inquiring for as well as pricing. As someone who needed to last minute cover my basis, Quintin was the absolute man and highly praise him for everything he did for me. Will def utilize Guitar Center Middleton more based off his awesome customer service skills and knowledge. -DJ Nordic Pharaoh

Guitar Center is Guitar Center. If you want to walk into a music store and have a great choice of…read moreinstruments, this is where you go. A location where you can actually touch, feel, and play the instrument you are considering purchasing. It has been that way since they first opened. I have been going to Guitar Center since their first location, (different from the one of today) in Hollywood, California. And, whenever I'm in a new city, if I have some time to kill, I always like to check out the local Guitar Center. You never know what you will find. This is what I did with this location. Walking in, as is almost always the case, you will year some player noodling on a guitar through an amp. I don't know how the people who work at these stores put up with it, as it is more frequently than not very bad playing. As was the case when I walked into this shop. An elderly, longhair guy, playing some bad licks (loudly) on a Strat through an Orange amp. I guess you (and the employees) just must tune them out. Horrible! This Guitar Center is set up as most of them are. A lot of electric guitars along one wall. Acoustics in the back. Basses on the other wall. Synths and keyboards over in their own section. All Good. This location is fully stocked with all of the instruments and accessories you may need. The staff seemed very nice and did none of the hard-sell type of thing. So, if you're in the area, and you need some musical equipment, this may be your place to go.
