It's hard for me to comprehend that this is what veterinary care has come to…read more I arrived at their door at approximately 2 PM with my German Shorthaired Pointer who had 30 minutes prior encountered a porcupine and suffered the resulting mouth full of quills and obvious stress and discomfort. The response from the vet was "we're just about to start our afternoon procedures and can't help". Stunned I asked "really, she has a mouth full of quills"... the reply: "we're sorry" I then drove another 25 minutes to the vet on Falmouth Foreside who admitted us and after administering a mild sedative removed the quills and discharged my pup 30 minutes later. I would never recommend Cumberland Animal Clinic to anyone. Hopefully the vet didn't have too hard a day and got home on time. Again, is this what small animal veterinary care has become?

I love and appreciate everybody at Cumberland Animal Clinic so very much! From the doctors to the…read moretechnicians to the front of house staff, every single person I have interacted with there has been exceptionally kind, professional, above and beyond proficient, and absolutely informed and able to help me with whatever my needs may be. They have often been able to squeeze me in last minute when necessary, I have never had to wait past my scheduled appointment time, the office is immaculate, and Dr. Lucas especially has gone above and beyond for me as veterinarian. My dog absolutely adores it there; there is no place he is more excited to be. This excitement results in a rather naughty, licky, and rambunctious pup, but the people at CAC love him anyway, handling his energy with compassion and skill. I feel that my dog recieves the best care possible, and that I am treated with fairness, kindness, and respect. After receiving treatment at CAC, I always receive a follow up call to check on my dog's progress. Una's medical care is better than my own! We (Una the dog and myself) appreciate you, Cumberland Animal Clinic! Keep up the good work!

Outstanding care over the lifetime of our animals (3 dogs and 1 cat). Skillful, kind,…read morecompassionate, knowing that pet owners are part of the treatment equation. We've never experienced any kind of emphasis on buying products, just very accessible and concerned and patient. And they've been doing this in the community for decades. Quite an accomplishment.

Unbelievably bad experience. Just seconds after Dr. Lebouf delivered the devastating news that my…read moregirl had terminal bone cancer, she launched into a self-righteous lecture about the dangers of grain-free diets. She quoted studies and strongly implied that my feeding choices had caused or contributed to her demise. She even added, "I know it's too late for B, but I know you have another dog and want to protect them." I was too overwhelmed by grief and tears to respond in the moment, but several things went through my mind: * I have no idea why she assumed B was on a grain-free diet. Not even true * This is classic "blame-shifting" but why? * There is no chance shelf stable slop pellets have better outcomes for animals than fresh food diets, I suspected whatever study she referring is going to be about pulse diets, where food slop companies swap out rice for anti-nutrients like chickpeas (terrible for dogs and actually leech nutrients, mostly indigestible). When they asked about her diet, I believe I just said "mostly home made - fresh meat and vegetables." I never said I gave them grain free kibble. I feed my dogs a balanced fresh-food diet (meats, vegetables, and rice in proper ratios, with age- and condition-specific supplements) about 80% of the time. When I can't prepare fresh meals, they get premium kibble (that contains rice), mixed with high-quality wet food. There is zero evidence in the scientific literature comparing a properly balanced fresh diet to commercial kibble. The studies Dr. Lebouf referenced appear to be the familiar ones comparing grain-inclusive kibble to "grain-free" kibble formulas that simply replace grains with pulses and legumes. That is not the same as comparing fresh food to kibble, and it is misleading to present it that way. Earlier this year I brought B in after she suddenly started limping in pain. They diagnosed arthritis and a soft tissue injury, charged $500 for imaging, and sent us home with pain medication. It's hard not to wonder whether the cancer was missed at that visit, considering it was in the exact location. B was a rescue who had endured severe abuse and malnutrition in her early years. She arrived terrified of everyone, trembling and submissive. For some reason she chose to trust me. Within a year she had visibly grown, gained confidence, and become the sweetest, most loving dog. She wasn't supposed to be mine forever, but we became inseparable. Losing her has been heartbreaking. I waited a long time before writing this review. I didn't want it to come purely from grief or anger. I understand that cancer can be difficult to catch, and I wouldn't be writing this if the only issue had been a missed diagnosis. I'm writing because of the condescending, sanctimonious way Dr. Lebouf spoke to me during this moment. She quoted science in a misleading way - I believe - because she either didn't actually read it or doesn't understand what it says. To be clear - there are NO STUDIES comparing grain free fresh food diets to kibble with grains. But this is how it was framed as if gospel. It was so inappropriate, but also inaccurate. I can only assume this is being preached repeatedly to other pet parents at the clinic. Many other staff members at the clinic are genuinely kind and great with animals.

Dr Smith was very gentle with her as he examined her, did x-rays, took blood work, etc. He laid it out to me clearly that she was in a lot of pain and what my best case/worst case scenario was. He calmly listened as I held back tears and said that she means the world to me, so please do whatever he can. It's now the middle of August and she's doing great. She went through 7 rounds of x-ray to help her knee, has been on prednisone for pain, takes a shot every month to help with her cartilage, was switched to Hill's Science J/D to improve her mobility and couldn't be a happier kitty. Some of the treatments were pricey but he never made money off me - in fact multiple times he didn't charge for his own services. It was clear to me that he just wanted to see my cat feel better. My gratitude goes out to him and his staff (who were all also very helpful and calming).

She is doing very well now. She doesn't snore and she doesn't get tired when we are playing. I have never seen her be so happy! He also recommended that I change her food to Prescription Diet and have her start taking supplements for a joint condition. Since her surgery, she is like a new cat. He spent so much time in answering questions and in providing such thorough care. His advice and surgical skills are excellent. I have been to several veterinarians and he is the only one who recommended changing her food. Since then, family and friends have commented on her fur coat looking brighter and healthier and she is barely shedding. Pumpkin is five years old and is finally living the quality life that she deserves. I really appreciate Dr. Smith and the staff for helping her. His care and actions have changed my cat's life, and for that, I highly recommend him.
