I came on a Friday evening after hours for a fundraiser and we mostly stayed on the second level…read more Still, it was a lot larger than I thought! Very open space and lots of wood. Long tables and offices. Couches, a huge case of stairs for you to sit and study on in the middle of one huge room, and Stauf's downstairs. Very cool! Would love to come back here for another event!

The Idea Foundry defines itself as a community of makers, designed to help you explore new ideas and unleash your passion to make things. It is a place for creative people to gather, work on their projects, bounce ideas off of and support others. They also offer a multitude of classes to the community. We decided to sign up for "Woodshop Orientation A: Table Saw, Miter Saw, Jointer & Planer" in the hopes that it would help us with our first home project. The cost is $90 per person for non members. Yes, you can become a member but I'm not going to get into all that info in this review. If you want more info on that, check out their website. When we arrived on a Saturday morning, our class was given a mini tour of the foundry. Then we went into the workshop that they utilize as their classroom. There was one instructor for our small class of 9 people. I appreciated that the class was small. I also enjoyed the instructors vast knowledge and concern for woodshop safety. In fact, maybe the class should have been named Woodshop Safety 101. We went through the class with one piece of wood, starting by making a cut with the miter saw, and working out way through the use of each tool. By the end of the class we had a perfectly cut and planed smaller piece of wood. Ultimately what I think I got from this class was the confidence to use machinery such as the table saw and miter saw on my own. The class gave me a real chance in my adult years to use these tools and I hope that will be helpful for me in the future.

Co-working is neat. Why didn't people think of this like 30 years ago? You have a business, you…read moreneed an office space outside of your house for meetings, sanity, et al. So... rent an office. Not an entire building. Let a group of small businesses split the cost. Brilliant. I've been working out of Qwirk for 3 days now and I have to say, I'm pretty damn happy here. The company I am working for is in the corner office right next to the kitchenette, so I can zombie walk to it for caffeine overdoses multiple times in the morning without risking falling asleep on the way. There are two of us our office and we have PLENTY of space. Locked doors, etc. + All-you-can drink Keurig coffee pods in 6 different flavors + Short walking distance from Katzinger's, Mojoe Lounge/Cup O Joe, Starbucks, Club 185 + more - convenient for meetings/nourishment. BONUS: Book loft! Lovely lunch break. + Cozy couch area for informal meetings or naps + Conference rooms for more formal meetings (or naps?) - Parking. There's no lot for Qwirk and German Village street parking can fill up pretty fast

Other member businesses are fun to work around. The typically size business that works at Qwirk is between 1-3 people. What works about Qwirk is that everyone has their own private office while still having access to common areas like conference rooms and a sitting area. There's a kitchenette, with access to a microwave, refrigerator, freezer and all the Keurig coffee you can drink. While it's not the "prettiest" space around, it's very functional and extremely reasonable in terms of cost and what you get as a member. Qwirk works for me and my business nicely.
