This is just in regards to the igloos. I love the spirit of these for the holidays. Last year we did them 3 times. So this year I was excited to have family from out of town try it! Number one the minimum has gone up to $400 which is incredibly too high for 2 hrs also when it's difficult for the server to keep up with. You have us then rushing and ordering things non stop and working about the minimum the entire time. With a group of kids it just doesn't make sense. Also certain things have changed which was disappointing from last year. No s'mores:( they had a really cute little set up for these which was nice and also it could be a fire hazard to have these in the tents so makes sense. You all should consider the hot cocoa bombs. Another change was there was no fake snow...this prob was the biggest let down...we asked about it twice and no one knew. It was just a huge bummer, the kids would have just loved this. I saw money was spent on new furniture, it would have been great to get a snow machine, even adults truly enjoy this. The igloos itself are very cute, they stay warm and fun. read more

Such a fun place for a warm evening. Our group of four shared the giant Moscow mule--a truly ambitious endeavor, even for the four of us. If you go for a group drink, be prepared to drink fast. The ice melted quickly and watered it down a lot. We also got the chicken skewers, which tasted good but didn't warrant the price. My friend asked for the barbecue sauce on the side, but they forgot--and given that it took nearly half an hour for them to get the food to us, we weren't willing to wait longer for them to try again (and I think they knew that). A fun environment, great views of Durham, and a fun place to hang out, but service could definitely be improved. read more

Unscripted hotel in Downtown Durham is certainly one of the trendiest hotels we have seen just at a casual glance but my wife and me were there for dinner this time. We went up to the Patio (on the rooftop) which are basically a bunch of tables and cushy chairs placed next to a small open pool and a bar at one end. Although the food options were plenty and there was more than one veggie option, the food itself was disappointingly underwhelming. First we got the veggie sliders and although initially excited that we found a great veggie option, the overall taste and seasoning was a BIG let-down. Nothing was warm even and felt like it had been sitting out for a while. Next we got the Beyond Burger which was slightly better but again the seasoning was a let-down. The fries were probably our most favorite part of the meal. We did get a free shareable as it was Buy One Get One free and got the Garlic hummus, and while the hummus was great, the accompanying toast and veggies looked a little sad and could have been better or something else entirely could have been provided! Verdict: Decent place to get a few drinks and lounge in the pool - but not a great place for food though. read more

The patio is set in the heart of downtown Durham and the rooftop offers a nice view. The pool is teeny tiny and more of a thing you stand in or dangle your toes in while sitting on the side. They are trying very hard to maintain a cool environment and the people attracted certainly reflect that air of materialism and self image cultivation. The ambiance therefore does not feel like it would be welcoming for Durham' s diverse population. The food is decent, somewhat overpriced but I was excited to see the impossible burger on the menu (a veggie burger that you order to temp because it mimics meat very effectively). This is what brought me into the patio in the first place. But unlike their seemingly green-minded menu options, I was very upset that my water glass arrived with a straw in it, not a huge deal but I didn't ask for a straw and I'm pretty confused as to why a place would go to such great lengths to attract enviro-minded people with the impossible burger (there is a process involved with gaining access to serve this) and not make quick and easy changes like making straws by default only be offered on request, composting their food waste through one of Durham's community compost organizations, or sourcing the meat that they do serve from local sustainable producers. It's great that you serve the impossible burger and that will draw durhamites but you can't stop there. Knock off some low-hanging sustainability-fruit within your organization and you'll have me back as a regular customer. read more

Drinking cocktails by a pool is my idea of paradise. The Patio is a fun place to relax and get some snacks. I wouldn't come for dinner or a full meal. Drinks are pricey but it's at a hotel so it's a little expected. I've always had a great time at this oasis in Durham. read more

The staff removed my original review instead of responding. I came here two weeks ago and had the veggie burger which was very bad. I thought that it has gone bad because there was some sweet tangy-ness to it which the server said was cranberries but it tasted very off. It was very subpar for a $14 veggie burger. I couldn't finish it. Also they use a ton of straws and single use plastics even though many places are trying to go straw free. Very disappointed by the food, service and now how they handle yelp reviews. Will not be back. read more

It's hard not to say that I like The Patio at the Unscripted hotel in downtown Durham for a few reasons. For starters, it's the only rooftop bar with a pool (albeit, a small one) that I know of around these parts! You do not have to be a hotel guest to enjoy. It's interesting to come here during the day vs. the night, as the atmosphere feels different. Both are enjoyable. In the summer, it's a great place to grab a drink, some food, and hang out. Sometimes, there is a DJ out on the patio playing some music. For the time that I did try their menu offerings-- my main takeaways were that: their fries are the thin, crispy kind and I liked my sandwich enough! read more

If you're looking for that Palm Springs poolside hotel experience, try Palm Springs. The Jack Tar building is one of my favorite old buildings in Durham, so I'm glad it was turned into Unscripted instead of condos. Its certainly an interesting amalgam of things even if it doesn't all together entirely work. On a hot summers' day what does one do but go to a pool like establishment. Recently my wife and I went to try out the Unscripted Patio and it was a mixed experience. It's a cool location with a very chill vibe. Unscripted might be overselling the patio area as a full eating experience when it's more so just a bar. Going for lunch the service was kind of spotty. We asked to be seated at a table with an umbrella since it was 95 and sunny outside and were not seated near an umbrella at all. After physically moving an umbrella to our table we were told that wasn't an option, and luckily a table opened up with an umbrella. After moving our stuff we placed our orders. If you're going for the frozen rose fruit drinks beware it seems that machine is probably going to be broken on any given day. I ordered the lobster roll sliders with frites and my wife ordered the grilled chicken salad with frites. The frites are a joke for the price. Nearly $5 for shriveled up very tiny fries. The lobster roll sliders were okay. Not a ton of meat, pretty small and not cheap at around $18, but the were pretty good for what was there. My wife's salad was pretty pitiful. It looked like airplane food. She wasn't really into it. The service was especially notable and notable for not being very good. Our server was dismissive and barely there. It was a busy day at the patio but it still felt like we were an afterthought. The Patio at Unscripted is an interesting thing, but it's overall a very underwhelming experience. The pool is barely a pool. It's slightly larger than a hot tub and filled with lots of people just sitting on the side. This would be a great event space but with so many people wanting to sun tan or hang on the side of the pool its just overly crowded. It's worth checking out, but only do so when it's not that busy. read more

Where to start.....I guess why 1 star. THE MANAGER ON DUTY 12/4/20 WAS A A$$ hole. Handled an initial situation we had with the igloo by raising his voice at my wife. Claiming it was because his mask but hadn't had "yell" at her prior to that. Called him out on it and acted like an a$$ hole in a very poor attempt at helping us out. Basically pushed 2 wet chairs in the already crowded igloo. If it hadn't been for us being there for my mother's 85th birthday (which was explained at the time of making the reservation) we would of left. We were all excited about the outdoor rooftop igloo experience. I won't say he deserved a punch in the mouth and us leaving but I won't. Let me explain. Again we were there for mom's 85th BD celebration wanted a table in a igloo for a dinner for 4. Confirming the reservation 2 days before found out they had scheduled us at a regular table on the patio. No no no. It was supposed to be n an igloo. They had a cancellation for a later time and we made adjustments. THEN we're told that the cost of eating in the igloo is $40 per person per hour non refundable. For the 4 of us that's automatically $320 for people that don't drink and the highest price entree is $26. And the balance of what is left stays with the hotel/restaurant and no part of it can be applied to a tip for the excellent excellent waitress we had. She was super. During that shocking call, we asked if we could come a few minutes early to put up a few balloons and birthday things. No problem. So we arrived 5 minutes early, get taken to the igloo with sparklers in the hostess hands (pretty cool) and the place is set up with 3 bar top tables 6 high chairs and a plastic coffee table in the middle. Now that fir a dinner reservation for 4 people. Obviously not conducive to what we needed for 2 85 year old people. All the igloos were set up a little differently. Saw some with couches and sofa chairs, some we like hangout areas and at least one had a dining table. Which was empty when we 1st said something about our igloo not being a good situation. Well by the time this "manager" got there people were just getting shown their igloo. So since this guy didn't seem to care and acted the way he did, like a jerk, we tried to make the best out a bad situation. Basically rearranged the whole igloo and when my parents arrived (no sparklers for them when brought) we made light of it and helped them into these high bar chairs. By the way this "manager" never came back to check on us the rest of the time we were there. What a professional. Anyways, most everything else was good or great. Experience was unique, fun and we had a blast considering. Mom and dad really appreciated it. Our waitress was excellent as I said and the rest of the staff was good too. Some of the food was great and some was just ok. They had a DJ set up and the music was way way too loud. So loud that the Bluetooth speaker inside the igloo was useless. I mean useless. Had the volume up high and still couldn't hear it over the DJ. So you have to talk over the music as if you were at a club. We were there in the evening so a bit cool but we were able to keep the temperature inside the igloo comfortable. Between closing the flap and the little electric fire place. Since our tab started at $320 we ate a plenty and even order dinner and desserts togo. Outside of the last minute surprise of the upfront cost I think I would recommend this place. But ask questions about what will be the set up of your igloo. That is if you're willing to spend $400 on dinner for 4. Oh, and not have to deal with the manager. read more

DO NOT COME HERE. There are plenty of other great places to go to in Durham for a night out. The service here is TERRIBLE. The drinks are TERRIBLE. Don't let the Instagram worthy snow globes bait you into coming here considering it is a $200 minimum even sit in them plus they are booked through December. I ordered a thermos of their "stop mulling around" which is a HOT drink and includes homemade apple cider, Bacardi, and cinnamon. When it arrived not only was it cold, but there was no apple cider... literally the main ingredient. It took a full 15 minutes for them to remake the drinks. I will admit these drinks were pretty good. I also ordered the la-di-da-di toddy which again was supposed to be HOT and it was luke warm when it arrived and had ZERO alcohol so I asked for them to remake the drink. The manager told me " the drink will taste the exact same if we make it again" which it definitely did... COLD without any alcohol. They gave me 2 drink vouchers for the next time I come back . I definitely will not be coming back here considering the drinks are way over priced, the service is horrible and bartenders don't know how to make drinks. DO NOT COME HERE. So this was my first time up to the Pool/Patio at the Unscripted Hotel. You enter through the hotel lobby and take the elevator up to the 3rd floor. Turn left and head out to the pool and patio. Super quirky spot, they had a very Durham DJ playing some music, a small/medium-size pool with a giant unicorn floaty, and then a bunch of tables and beach chairs around the patio. The bar is set on the side, and they offer a pretty nice-looking menu and plenty of drink options. I can't speak to the food, but the cocktails were incredible. I opted for the Summer Buzz, and while pricey, was one of the best cocktails I've gotten in Durham - hands down. Local honey, local cucumber vodka, st. germain, lemon juice, and cucumber. Incredible depth of flavor, the right amount of freshness and sweetness, and so refreshing. I could have sat there all day with these, and will certainly be back soon based on that alone. read more

This is my first time in the city of Durham and I truly have to say this is truly an amazing place to visit if you stay here. This restaurant marks off everything it needs to get 5 stars. Every person i working here was very kind and attentive. The food was truly amazing i would not have changed anything about it. The music choice, for me, was amazing it was very upbeat and tied the whole restaurant together. This rooftop restaurant made it feel like you were at a barbecue at a friends or family's house during the summer. If you're staying at the hotel (The Unscripted Hotel) you could go to the pool which shares a space with the restaurant which adds a very nice touch to it. read more

I went here on the rooftop pool party opening night. Felt like a miniature version of Vegas. They had a photo booth, dj, and drink specials. It was a fun night and everyone dressed like it was Vegas... With that being said, at the end of the day this is still located in Durham nc. The people are, at heart, hipsters and every night I've been, since, it's been mediocre. Yes there will be nights where the pool is open and you have a good group of friends that make it fun, but the only real reason to go is if you want to be outside on a roof on a warm summer day. The pool is tiny and had dirty water most times we were there. The view, while indeed a rooftop view, is still of a mediocre Durham skyline. As long as you keep your expectations in check, you'll have a good time here. read more

I too a friend out to lunch yesterday and he ordered BBQ and got a blackened chicken sandwich and because he didn't want me to complain he ate the blackened chicken. Nothing like having your taste buds set on BBQ only to get blackened chicken. Then they were putting up Christmas decorations and the Christmas tree fell on my friend. We went to the pool last year with our little boy and had a nice time. We live in Durham, so this is a hidden gem and we liked it! This year, the policy has changed that no kids are allowed at the pool if they are not guests. We could have stayed, but not our son. Why not just say: the pool may only be used by guests at the hotel! Put signs up, stating that fact, and call it a day, instead of discriminating against a 3 year old, because there's a rooftop bar and people get rowdy! So if I was a guest, at the pool, with my grandson, and people got rowdy, would I still be asked to leave? It's looking more like "Raleighwood" in all its wana-be pretentiousness and not so much what Durham is about at all. Thanks, but no thanks! Just don't let the public in at all. read more

We were charged $14.00 for a glass of wine. The glass of wine is a plastic cup. The server never came back to ask if we wanted to order food. The staff and the management team ignored us. However... it wasn't magical at all. Three days beforehand, the hotel called to let us know there'd be a minimum order for our party. $300 for four. Except for we were two adults and two kids. And their patio menu is tiny. We figured we'd still give it a go, enjoy drinks for us & Shirley Temples for the kids, apps, entrees, desserts, it'd be fine. They were out of half the menu. They had no hummus or croquettes (no one ordered them so they took them off the menu). They had no mashed potatoes, but plenty of French fries. They would only have he chicken once the food truck arrived. They were out of every dessert. And after ordering mediocre bar food, we found out there was no minimum after all. I had lunch here mid-September . The food was good however this was all overshadowed a few days later. Our meal was $48.38. The total including the tip I left was $55. However someone adjusted the tip to $10, charging my card $58.38. I have spoken with Kevin who introduced himself as the director of finance. Kevin acknowledged the error was on their end and would be crediting my acct. I have been trying to get this resolved for over a month now. My calls are now going unanswered. Drink selection is relatively diverse and affordable. We came here for the igloo experience on a Saturday night. To start off, booking the igloo was a nightmare. I had to fill out the form online and then call multiple times. Paul left me a message and gave me his cell phone number to call back, I then returned his call and finally got it booked on the 3rd call. The first time he said he would call right back and didn't, the second time he put me on hold and then hung up on me without a call back. Once our party of 10 got there, the service was subpar. We got our drinks very quickly and then put in our dinner order. 30 minutes later she comes back and said she lost our dinner order and needs to write it down again. We were understanding and told her our order again. Our food then came out at very different times, some food arriving 1.5 hours into our 2 hour reservation. When we asked about ordering dessert, she said the kitchen was closed. She never apologized about the long wait time. Someone else who delivered our food apologized once, which we appreciated. After all of this we were still charged 20% gratuity.... A fun outing, but terrible service and overpriced. read more

This place is awesome atmosphere wise....cool roof top bar with a pool, good views of downtown. BUT......We've been several times last year and a recent Friday night and all I can say is PLEASE HIRE MORE WAIT STAFF! Friday nights tend to be busy nights in the restaurant business right. My drinks were constantly empty, my wife's water only got filled twice and it was 30mins before we even got to chance to food order, much longer to actually receive it. The food was good once it showed up. I really really want to love this place and visit more but who wants to go to a bar where you can't even get a drink. I DO NOT BLAME the wait staff, he was pretty cool and I would never stiff someone on a tip when it was clearly not his fault. In fact tip a little extra, cause he's gonna probably get stiffed by somebody who's pissed at him personally). There was only one waiter and one runner on our side of the patio (15-18+ tables)...and one manager(?) who appeared to be filling gaps in order taking and refills as best as he could. The busboy spilled a glass of water while clearing the table while we were sitting there and he did apologize but then walked off and never even wiped up our soaked table. Sadly I think we'll skip future visits till we see if the palace is gonna survive and maybe hire some more staff. read more
