Ahoy! Souvenirs for your Buccaneers!…read more After dinner and having their wonderful Award-Winning Honey Pecan Fried Chicken I made my way upstairs to their gift shop. As I began walking upstairs it was hard not to miss seeing the walls lined with pirate and (State of) Georgia-themed novelty shirts! Treasure awaits up the spiral staircase! I've never seen such a huge gift shop all dedicated to pirate stuff (and other nice gift items too). They have everything from pirate gears to cookbooks! I even drew some nice compliments for my photos from Nate M (CM, Nashville TN) LoL! Nate must like pirates. Yup, they had art work, mugs/cups, shot glasses, postcards, unique tees/fleece/hoodies, treasure chests, hats, posters... and, of course, pirate costume stuff! I bought a bandana head scarf... pink, of course! I enjoyed looking around the shop. I bet you'll find a thing or two interesting up the spiral staircase. There's something for everyone! Let's start with the owner, Ms. Ann. She was welcoming, gracious, and genuinely helpful without ever feeling overbearing. Her presence alone made the experience memorable. The shop is filled with unique treasures. So many pieces caught my eye, but I ultimately chose a handmade purse that was beautiful, distinctive, and exceptionally well crafted. Beyond the shopping, we ended up having a lovely conversation about Savannah's history. Ms. Ann even shared a contact for my next visit so I can explore more of the city's history and culture through an African American lens. This little gem was definitely a great find, and I'm confident I'll shop there again, whether in person or virtually.

This store had really nice items some higher in price than where I am from of course but still nice. The clothing was nicely made. The merchandise seemed like it had been sitting for a while or shipped based on the tape around the bottles. I mention this because there was one oil that I wanted to purchase but I didn't know if it had been opened or not. The music was delightful in the store and the clerk was a joy. She was very kind and funny. She was helpful and when my partner wanted to purchase a coat/jacket that had been there a while she noted that many had tried it on, as it had been there a long time, but it had to be meant for her. i would stop back in to look for more things if I am in Savannah again.

When it's hot out, it's not only great to be able to duck into the store to cool off but also to see the various goods they carry. Being operated under the guidance of nonprofit Eastern National, the store is one of the better ones I've come across when visiting National Monuments. It not only has all kinds of tee shirts for souvenirs but also really magnificent replica glassware and other such items. It also has archive photos, books and other items that address the lives, both Confederate and Union, of those who fought at the fort, chronicles relating to the construction of the fort, Nation Park Passport Guide books, history excerpts on General Robert E. Lee and a good number of items and materials related to Coastal Georgia. Compared to the gift and souvenir shops located at other such National Monuments or parks, I'm really a super fan of this one.

Getting to know the Cottage Shop was a reminder that not all of the "Old South" is gone. First of all, possibly the most unwelcoming store I have been inside of in recent memory. Knocking several times to be let in. Only to have someone answer and almost reluctantly let us inside. And then, I was followed around the store. I would like to tell you that this was because the proprietor was interested in us and wanted to help. But that would be a rose colored tint I am not prepared to see through. I am of color. I was followed around the store in a way that I know. I know the motivation and belief system that causes store personnel to follow me, ask me repeatedly if I "need help", or simply just eye me suspiciously. I was offended and despite the beautiful merchandise (we wanted to buy the set of steak knives we saw--we later bought them from Williams and Sonoma) I bought nothing. I want them to starve for business and hopefully eventually go where racism needs to go...away.
