The Old Market (or TOM, as we like to call it) was opened in 2011 by creators of the global percussive phenomenon STOMP to create an independent hub for the arts in their home city and channel some of their success back in to the local arts eco system.
The festival-like programme at TOM is the cornerstone of our identity. We host over 200 different events every year from our multi-format (300 seat, 500 standing capacity) space. Over 55,000 people come through our doors each year to experience live music, film, boundary breaking theatre, dance, cabaret, comedy, literature, workshops and performances using new technologies, as part of our #TOMtech programme.
The Old Market is not only the best place in Brighton and Hove to see a show, it's also an excellent venue for both public and private events. Whether you're looking to stage a performance, organise a conference or host a party, we offer a wide range of packages to suit all requirements. We're also happy to customise a hire to your exact needs.
Our Main House has various seating and staging arrangement possibilities, kitted out with high spec PA and lighting. TOM's Bar and adjoining Waterloo Room, are available to hire separately, but are also included as part of most Main House hires. Your event is sure to find a great home at The Old Market, be it a performance, conference, party, wedding reception, recording or anything else you're planning.
History
Established in 2010.
Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas, co-creators of the world-famous percussion show STOMP, first worked together in this very building with rehearsals for the first collaboration between Cliff Hanger Theatre and Pookiesnackenburger in 1981. Established as OMAC (Old Market Arts Centre) in 1980, it only survived a short while.
Completely renovated in 1998 by The Old Market Trust, with major building revisions, The Old Market ran as a venue until 2010, when it closed and was put up for sale.
Yes/No Productions bought the building that year, and made further renovations and additions aiming to revive it as a centre of the arts for Brighton and Hove...
The building is a vibrant and important part of the cultural scene in Brighton and Hove, with performances ranging from theatre and comedy, to live music gigs and club nights.
