Of all the theatres in Brighton, the Sallis Benney is one of the larger group. Run by the Brighton University, it often showcases Brighton University and student work, as well as events organised by companies from outside. There's lots going on here at most times, from art fairs to theatrical performances, something for everyone!
As venues go, the Sallis Benney offers a huge variety of different events. It's versatility means it often ends up being a hot-spot for nearly every alternative artistic venture that can afford the space, and basically works like a little Brighton Dome: everything and anything seems to get a fair showing here, from slightly more niche art exhibitions to classical and jazz music. This isn't necessarily a problem: it just means that the Sallis Benney is now known for the slightly more esoteric side of the arts. Since it only seats about 300, that's probably for the best.
I wouldn't say the program here was consistently good: mostly filled with local Brighton groups, the program is prone to be a little hit and miss. Still, there's plenty of stuff to see, and you can normally tell what will be good and what will need a little work from the programme (freely available online).
As well as all of the arts, there is a small cafe where you can buy cheap and cheerful teas and coffees. In total, this venue offers a slightly more eccentric arts program for the Brighton town centre, and that's only a good thing. Check out their programme, see if there's anything for you! read more
