To call the old england an undiscovered gem might be going a bit far, however an undiscovered (and rather impressvie) cubic zirconia kind of fits the bill.
Before I elaborate on the good and bad points of this place, a histroy lesson!
The old England was the local pub to cricketing legend W G Grace. This is marked by a few pieces of cricket memrobelia around the interior. Really this place should be a pilgramige for any one going to the gloucester ground (further up the A38) to watch a cricket match, but sadly it's not.
This pub is just a tad too far off the beaten track to benefit from being around the lively arches / cheltenham road / stokes croft area. As far as I'm aware it's only locals and those in the know that come here. This truly is a shame as the interior is comfortable, the staff are very polite and fothcoming, and the range of drinks (which does include a couple of real ales) is adequate and very well priced.
So why is it not popular? I can't say, however ,the last time I came here a guy playing pool was attacked by his brother with a screw driver. This was early afternoon on a thursday so I don't know if it's is a regular occurance but one I wouldn't want repeated. Saying that I would come here again, infact I would go out of my way to come here again (just not when it's dark).
If it wasn't for that incident this place would get an extra star but for now I can only give it two. Adequate read more
