The Oakland Press has become increasingly left leaning. I called to cancel subscription on July 6 . They kept taking 5.60 for 6 days after saying it's for special edition. I told them I did not authorize any payments and had him confirm my cancelation. We will see. May have to file a fraud report with my bank read more

I signed up for the newspaper for six months and sent a check. It was a little over thirteen bucks a month, with a unknown amount for special editions, like the Thanksgiving edition. I got a call today that I owed them money - the special editions - like the Thanksgiving edition are $25 extra apiece. I cancelled. read more

Do not subscribe to the OP!!! The OP will offer $19.99 for 6 months... 2 months later the OP will bill your credit card $26.00. Their excuse for billing will be you subscribed for the "Special Edition". Total BS! OP will not refund. Also the OP keeps your credit card info and places your subscription on auto pay - without your approval!!! All this is done through the OP's 3rd party billing in South Asia. The OP is scamming subscribers! I know because I am one of the victims. read more

Zero rating ,I gave oakland press a 3rd chance or it may be 5 or 6 chance. I am so tired of the BS you get from their phone center I can't stand it anymore. I ordered the paper to be delivered only on Sunday for a very good price of 10.99 for 13 weeks, I sent in the invoice and a ck for 10.99. That was in Nov. 2025,after a few missed deliveries things straightened out, I gave our delivery lady a Christmas tip even though she hadn't delivered for long. Starting in late Nov. or early Dec.the Oakland Press started calling from India about a shortage of 3 dollars and 68 cents. They probably called at least6 to 8 times and wouldn't talk to my wife. When I finally talked to someone I to him that my invoice was for 10.99 not 10.99 . I asked him why it was different and got no answer .By this time I was finished with him because he kept talking over me and I considered him VERY RUDE. Please remember this is for 3.68 at that point I told him it wasn't about the 3 dollars this whole situation was lust plain stupid he is still talking over me so I cancelled the paper and wished him a good day and hung up on him while he was still talking .Their customer service just makes things worse but maybe thats what they want. Good luck Oakland Press you are going to need it . PS I was a customer since 1980 when my wife and I moved to W Bloomfield mi. read more

Do NOT subscribe to The Oakland Press. I fell victim to a nice guy at Kroger who talked me into subscribing to Sunday only for $10 per month. This is less than if I bought the paper but is more than if I just signed up online - that comes to about $6.76 per month. My credit card was charged and I didn't get a paper. I called customer service to cancel and was informed that there are no refunds - he said the guy at Kroger should have given me the OP refund policy notification. He wouldn't listen to me and kept offering different promotions for the e-edition and daily delivery. He claims that he canceled the account - no refund of my $10 and supposedly he deleted my credit card information. I may have to change my credit card number - we'll see in a few weeks. HORRIBLE business and shameful that they have people embedded in Kroger.lisam read more

I was tricked into signing up by some random people at the grocery store. They told me "just $10!" with no explanation of how often the $10 would be charged. I imagined a year or maybe quarterly. No, I've now been charged twice within a week. Cancelation is absolutely abhorrent and difficult. This paper is a waste of newsprint, ink, time, and money. read more

Same for me, in the ditch, lost in the snow, or just plain no delivery. Called support number, Sorry I'll get a paper out to you and credit your account, never happened until I sent a E-Mail to Danny Mogollon Director Circulation Operations dmogollon@medianewsgroup.com read more

Beware!!!!! Oakland Press has moved Customer Service to the Phillipines. So NO CUSTOMER SERVICE AT ALL. I subscribed to online and they started home delivery. I wasn't even at home. What a joke! read more

The deliver the ash day Oakland Press Plus in my neighborhood for free. The problem is it is a nuisance. I have called for over a month requesting to stop delivery to my address and every week they claim it will be handled but every week the paper is at the end of my driveway. This is the worst company I have ever dealt with!! They billed be for two subscriptions and I don't have any!!! They billed me for $14 x 2 ... a total of $28 dollars for one month!! And this is just for online. The tone of the customer service person was horrible. Dismissive and nasty. Told me I read the agreement and knew there were no refunds. I asked him to at least refund on of the $14 charges and he told me there are NO refunds. DO NOT USE this as your news !!! Horrible service!!! read more

I guees I will just add to this nonsense. Been a customer for many years and now cannot get anyone to help. Used to have excellent service and now all I get are promises that never happen. I truely miss the paper but this is insane. I seriously wonder if they are even able to have an any advertisers. Can't read them if we don't see them! read more

Absolutely the worst billing possible! I paid for the renewal in August 2024 for 26 weeks that was on the notice. Now, they are calling me to renew and say I owe them. They keep calling me to renew, but none of them can answer why I'm not covered for 26 weeks (starting 8/2024) like my submitted and paid renewal notice said? Not sure what to do? I like the paper, but not paying double. read more

360.00 charged over 59 days for subscription that was cancelled over a year ago. When I started to get papers (3) in my ditch...I checked my account...somehow it started back up not at 6.85 w/o but 22.50 without 1 letter? Spent 30min with customer service and she refused to cancel and refused to give me any info along with telling me I would NOT be receiving any credit? 3 papers-360.00? Seems criminal. I had to cancel my credit card and incur ridiculous inconceivable headaches. Can anyone say class action suit...I know I'm not alone. read more

Started Oakland Press paper delivery on Sunday only in August. Worst delivery in Birmingham area ever. Called almost every weekend. received paper 25% of time. The paper itself is not so bad. There is some decent and relevant editorial in a variety of categories. I liked the crossword puzzles, one from LA times and the other from tribune content agency. Less than 2 years ago I subscribed at $19.80 billed every 28 days. 8 billing cycles in it became $26.40, 8 more billing cycles in it became $34.40, 7 more bills it was increased to $44.00. About 2.5 x the original price in less than 2 years... Inflation being around 3%, This to me is someone with your financial info just outright taking advantage of you and hoping you don't notice. read more

I must say that this is the worst company that I have dealt with and they do not honor your subscription, you pay for a service and don't get service. The delivery service is the worst and they do not believe in refunding your money and only want to credit you with another month of crappy delivery service. Please stay away from this company. I subscribed for weekly service and received 3 papers in one day and never received my paper after complaining the first time and then I thought I would give them another try and subscribed for Sunday only subscription and never received my paper. I then complained and thought I canceled my service and received a charge on my card and they refused to refund my credit card and want to extend another month. Why???? Now yelp will not allow me to post my comment unless I give them a rating and they do not deserve a rating at all. read more

Shouldve listened to the reviews. Sunday morning, first sunday of my subscription. No paper. Even the digital paper had me locked out friday. do not subscribe, they will not deliver. read more

This newspaper assured me that they had solved their delivery problems. I was a customer for over a quarter century, but canceled due to delivery problems. I was contacted over and over again to give them another chance. I finally gave in. Just starting out with 2 day a week subscription to see how they would do. After many weeks of not a single paper, and several phone calls, each assuring me this week is the week I'll see my first paper. Still nothing. So I made what was to be my final call, to cancel and get a refund. I was told that they had a no refund policy. I guess most fraudsters don't give refunds. They sold me a service that doesn't exist, and I'm the one that has to live up to a so called contract about a refund policy that I was never told about. Do not rely on this company to do the right thing. I'm very disappointed in them. Plus I get to hear my wife, say I told you so. read more

After seeing someone else from Clarkston that isn't getting the paper they paid for, writing a review is senseless. The paper sucks and the delivery is even worse. Will not renew my subscription. The Oakland Press has become the worst company I have ever dealt with. I paid a six months subscription and missed getting the paper 55 times and only got credit for part of it. I received my new bill, the price had gone up $43 for the same length of time. I called and asked to speak with billing, I was on hold for 40 minutes. I explained my problem to the lady in billing and the fact the paper went up $43.00 when they new I missed the paper 55 times was ridiculous. She automatically cancelled my subscription without me asking her to do, which was fine because that is what I was going to do. I have been getting this paper for almost sixty years, all she could say is your account is canceled. Now I know why the company is so bad. read more

The Oakland press deserves minus stars as they have got to be the worst company I have dealt with in the last 5 years! Started paper/online subscription, never got paper so called 2 weeks later, still no paper Called again 2 more weeks later and cancelled because still no paper but instead of cancelling they charged me another $20.00; I told them to cancel again. I called my credit card company to put into dispute(ongoing as I write) Then 2 weeks later I get a bill in the mail so I called again and not cancelled yet but they will cancel later this month!! I had to use NON standard business language(swearing) to CANCEL as of original cancel date and tell them no $ from me. I have never received a paper now 6 weeks later. Let';s see if screaming at them helps. ps. I am 72 yo and have NEVER screamed at someone over a business transaction. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. ps their online works horribly. read more

The absolute worst rag paper I have ever Subscribed to. Horrible business too. This company is a scam. The subscription was for 52 weeks and started the end of April 2022 and it was paid in full. It was weekend only. The Sunday paper rarely comes, I'm forced to call them all the time. They say they'll send a paper but they don't. They were asked to put it on the porch since my mother is elderly and can't walk to the end of the driveway. They've managed to get it to the porch less then 6 times (I'm being generous because I only remember 3 times). They don't deliver the paper but they refuse to cancel and refund the money. Numerous times they said they would extended the subscription another week because the paper wasn't delivered. Now they say they won't do that nor will they fulfill their 52 week paid subscription obligation that they've been paid for, ending the subscription 12/31/2023. They say it's because of 12 special editions, of which they admit they only delivering 5. Don't send them money, they are the worst company I've ever dealt with. I'm going to try and get the media to report on their scam. It's a breach of contract! Everyone here should contact the media, maybe we can get them shut down and better yet a class action lawsuit. read more

Be very careful if you have an Oakland Press subscription. They have raised my rates every six months and they state it is their policy and right to do so. In April 2019 my rate was $19.60 per month for Thursday, Friday and Sunday delivery. It has been raised to $50.00 per month, which is well above the face value of the paper. When I called to cancel and request a credit, they refused to credit and offered the same subscription for $11.00 per month. Why would they charge me $50 for months and then offer $11 after complaining and cancelling? Watch your bill every month. This is bad business practice. read more

The paper is fine, but the delivery is terrible. I'm just as likely as not to even get my paper. I use Sunday only subscription.

I subscribed to the paper. Delivery was to begin Wednesday, February 26th. I have not received a paper yet. I have called numerous times and sent an email to complain. Still no paper and no explanation for not receiving the paper. Spoke to Leonard, who stated my account will be credited and he will submit the complaint to the manager.
