    After the run
    Dana K.

I did this run about a year ago with a group of friends. We got a deal on living social for half the price so that always makes things better! Before we went we saw that they had a lot of things for sale to buy at the run but to save money we went to party city and got packages of glow sunglasses, colored socks, colored hair spray, and other items. The neon run was nice enough to tell us items that would glow and what to buy even if it wasn't from them. The items they have for sale are priced pretty decent but my friend is big on getting the best bargain prices and we had a group so it made sense to buy items in bulk. With our purchase of the run, the Neon run gave us a shirt, glow sticks, big blow up glow sticks, glow necklaces, tattoos, body paint, and more. It was a bag of fun things...I don't remember every single item but it was more than any race I have ever done usually gives! Just a few things to mention..this is a fun run. Absolutely silly, get dirty, dance with the music, feel good run! Yes getting dressed up was part of the fun! People on yelp complaining...um it's not meant to be a real race for time...this is a get down and dirty party run! I have done Spartan races, gladiator runs, mud runs, the color run, and many more. If you want a workout hit the gym. I ran but people were at all different levels of fitness here. So don't be imitated by your fitness level...all ages and people are at different levels and are welcomed! There were lots of people that could only walk and some that ran. It's suppose to be fun! They spray you as you go through the different stations and you can see it under the black light. We had a blast! At the end of the run they have a big party going with music and a huge tent with black lights everywhere. Everyone is having dancing and they sell drinks. I noticed some people mentioned they didn't get T-Shirts...sounds like they couldn't afford to keep the T-Shirts going. They are selling all their tickets on groupon and living social dirt cheap and have to pay a lot of money to put this event on. Sounds like they couldn't afford to do it anymore. Honestly I feel bad for the company. It's a shame. This was a fantastic event. I didn't see one disappointed face all night. Smiles and laughter nonstop! They even sent out a survey asking how we liked the event, what they could do different and suggestions on letting people know about them. I should mention we did this run in Sacramento but it's a traveling run so I believe it's the same people that work the runs. Also many places charge for parking, $10 isn't bad. In closing if your looking for a fun time I couldn't recommend this run more! Most fun I've had on a run yet!

Turn off the Sun so we can start!

It brought back so many fond memories of attending with my family and friends every year. As time passes it's hard to get everyone together. Hubby and I went for a peaceful day at the park. We attended the second day of the festival. Lots of merch vendors plenty to see, touch, feel. The hard part was deciding on which color lol. A smaller stage with covered seating area located in the back. Food vendors lined along the pathway. Malasadas! Chocolate filled?! Yes please! We tried all the flavors and chocolate was the favorite. Hot and fresh so good. I did have to dust a little sugar off like a beignet because I wanted that oozing chocolate.. divine! Manapua was aight.. I know they could do better. Everyone is friendly and welcoming. No attitudes at these festivals only kind and caring. You can bring your own water which is so nice especially during the summer. Get there early for a shady spot to set up your chairs, blankets or og bamboo mats. Parking was $10 in the parking structure. Lots of handicap parking spots reserved in the front. It was nice to see these accommodations. The structure is the length of the park so there's lots of space. If you get there early enough you can also park on the sidewalk or at the other end of the park with a little further walk to avoid fees. Mobile bathrooms with outdoor wash station. All of the performances were so beautiful. Listening to the island music and watching the performers brought the ohana vibes with the island spirit of aloha. Live musicians and MC were the cherry on top. Keeping that peaceful harmony flowing throughout the whole day.

For a small $15 all day entry fee you have a bigger area, better stages, more organization (even fireworks!) and the best part - bigger beer gardens! And they hand out wrist bands so you can still come and go and wander between sides. Funk Fest takes place in the open areas by Beachwood BBQ and Congregation Ale House and extends all the way on the other side of Broadway past Wokano. There is still two stages, an area for djs, an area for dancers, the shops/vendors, capoeira circle, but everything just has better quality and organization to it. The grassy area back on the Wokano side has a nice shady area to rest too. There is much more community involvement and presence at LBFF. I love that the nearby shops get involved, especially good ol Congregation and Beachwood Bbq providing two great beer gardens on either side of the lots. This is definitely a Long Beach treasure! Keep the funk alive, its worth the nickle and dime!

[UPDATE 1: Review #32]…read more Went back to the Festival on Sunday to purchase another piece of Ms. Michiko Miyazaki's 3D artwork. She was so nice... gave my daughter a mini blue crane origami. H immediately headed for the Arts & Crafts booth to color a fish & fan. Then we wandered over to a display of plants, flowers, & bonsai trees. Our second to the last stop (we were planning to watch the Taiko Drums) was an origami table with a "grumpy, old man" (he wasn't, just looked like it). ;-) My l'il one wanted to make a flower that kinda looks like a tulip but the instructor was teaching everyone how to make a box. Needless to say... it was an interesting session with a 3 year old who skipped her nap & was somewhat cranky for having to wait. H kept chatting & mumbling through the instructions, then all of a sudden he shouts "HEY!" & shocks H to sit up straight & focus. LOL He also jokes in between the folds to "take our time but hurry up." What a contradictory man. =D Anyway, we got it done but it took awhile (see photo for finished product). We ended the afternoon with a couple of performances by the Taiko Center of L.A. (their most viewed YouTube performance was in the Princess of China music video). Cool! This Festival is definitely an enjoyable family-friendly event that supports the local community.

I was happy to see the tradition carries on with these type of clubs in our digital world. I just wish there were more choices on the food and snack to try and explore.

Strolling through the small-town vibes of downtown torrance is a delight. Keep in mind it can get a little warm at times so I reccommend wearing a hat to keep cool. I score amazing pieces each time. Prices for Jewlery can range from $1 to $1k+ In regards to parking, it can be a bit tricky since its mainly residential parking available but I always manage to find parking near El Prado park.

Over the past year the quality and variety of offerings has definately gone down. One of my shopping buddies used to complain that there were too many booths of nothing but vintage jewelry. Well now I would complain that there are too many booths of toys, some new some vintage. Lots of cheap new market crap, along with many new food type vendors, inter-mixed with several crafty vendors better suited to arts and crafts shows.. Having shopped and interacted with vendors for years I was able to discuss the current set of affairs with a few of the long term vendors. The synthesis of a few discussions boils down to just a couple issues/cause for the decline. 1: Money is tight in the dystopian economy 2: The sellers' booth fees were raised drastically last year, driving many long time vendors to leave. 3: The closing of the Alpine Village swap meet has driven several dealers to take refuge at the "Antique Faire". The impending closing of the Long Beach Stadium show may send vendors scrambling to this location. The monthly Sunday outting failed to really thrill this visit.

It was today! You missed it! I didn't!…read more But there's always next year...because this event is held annually, on Sunday, around the weekend before Halloween, in front of Lunada Bay Plaza (Via Anacapa & Yarmouth Road, adjacent to Palos Verdes Drive West). Signs are posted in Malaga Cove & Lunada Bay on PV Drive West before the event. The festival is small, mostly locals who walk there from home. If you drive, park on surrounding residential streets (free). Via Anacapa is shut down between the hardware store & Yarmouth Road for the festival. There's a concert in Lunada Bay Park, right in front of the plaza. The event is put on by Lunada Bay Homeowners Association for Lunada Bay residents but open to all. Leashed dogs apparently OK, I saw several (who didn't know quite what to think of the critters in the petting zoo). No charge for entry to the festival or concert but you might want to bring a pumpkin on wheels & register to enter the pumpkin race. Great fun! Pumpkins go every which way, rarely in a straight line. People chase their pumpkins down the hill on the practice runs to keep them from smashing into whatever's in their path. I saw one wipe out against a car tire. Adults were having at least as much fun as kids with those pumpkins. There was also a petting zoo, a climbing wall, food booths, balloon artist, face painting & more. Some kids wore their Halloween costumes. The owners of Lunada Market & Deli cooked up burgers, brats, corn on the cob, sides, all reasonably priced. Delicious cheeseburger with all the trimmings ($7)! I shoulda had two. I got sunburned watching the pumpkin races! They race in groups of 5, then the winners of each race compete, assuming their pumpkins survive the first round. Family fun at its finest. I wanna enter the pumpkin race next year! I'll borrow a neighbor kid to bring with me so I don't look stupid. In my Halloween costume....
