Hampton Inn Burlington - Guest room

Just stayed at this hotel for one night a few weekends ago. I usually like to stay in an Airbnb or…read moreVbro, but I was only staying over for one night, and they usually require a two-night stay. There are not many hotel options in the Burlington area, but I selected this Hampton because it seemed to have the best reviews. The desk clerk was friendly, and I was greeted warmly. Although I was told that I had been "upgraded," but the room was exactly what I had reserved. It was nothing special, but fine. Regarding cleanliness, it seemed to be okay on the surface, but I dropped something under the bed and found some remnants of cereal that had not been picked up by a vacuum. Not the end of the world, but it was there. Although I see that several people have commented that the breakfast was good, I found it to be loaded with a lot of unappetizing, artificially-flavored junk. The powdered eggs did not look appealing. I made a waffle, but threw it out after one bite. I ended up with a banana and oatmeal. I am probably in the minority here, but I think it would be better to have fewer breakfast options, but of higher quality. My biggest complaint was that with fees and taxes, the room for one night cost over $300! For a little town like Burlington, and for the quality of the hotel, I think that room rate is outrageous. If you have to stay in Burlington, and need a hotel, this is indeed your best option. However, if you don't mind traveling a few miles, I would stay at a less-expensive hotel closer to the expressway.

It's right next to the train tracks and based on previous reviews of it being a noisy location, I never heard a train during the night, and I'm a light sleeper. I did have an odd numbered room. A train did go by during the day when I was enjoying the hot tub, but there were no horns and it wasn't loud. It was a comfortable nights sleep with soft sheets and pillows. Bathroom amenities were good quality. The furniture in the room and the breakfast area show a lot of wear and tear. In my room, the carpeting was fringed and worn where it met the tile from the bathroom. My room did not have a mini fridge or microwave which I've found standard in other branded hotels at the same price point. The hot breakfast was decent and typical of other hotel brands I've stayed in. I gave it three stars, because I expected more from it being a Hilton brand. It was comparable to other hotel brands, nothing special.

The room was clean and had a rustic modern feel. When the carpet is beige, you know they have to take care of it consistently. Everything had a plush feel. The shower had a rainfall showerhead and a handheld. There's a scent that emanates throughout the hotel and into your room. It's light and adds to the ambiance. It's also in the sheets and linen too. I guess that adds to one of the negatives I list later in that the HVAC seems to be centrally controlled. There was some very minor debris in the sink that may have been left from wiping of a dirty rag, but that was mostly it. Gym was nice and parking was plentiful and free. What I didn't like: - Mini fridge in the room had a lot of snacks and other drinks that I assume were for sale. I usually pack my own food, so those items took up some space in the fridge - I get cold easily, so I try to adjust the thermostat, but it's centrally controlled, which I've never seen... I'm assuming all of the rooms are regulated in this way... - Breakfast bar- had bare minimal which I really don't mind. I really wouldn't expect a place like this to serve you breakfast unless it was full service. Would definitely come back

Also has a mini bar in the room. Only negative point is there was no refrigerator or microwave. Great restaurant located just off the lobby for a fine dining experience. Does not have full breakfast but does have grab and go muffins, fruit, coffee, etc. They also have a rooftop bar where one can sit inside or outside. Full bar with good bartenders. Menu is limited but still plenty to choose from. We had an order of mussels and a charcuterie tray. Both were very good. Our bartender was Colton and he took good care of us.

The mansion was built in 1856, making it the first mansion in Lake Geneva. The estate has been completely redone but charming details were kept. Along with a mansion where you can book a room, Maxwell also includes beautiful gardens, lounges, outdoor fireplaces, a heated pool, croquet and bocce ball. There is also a separate area in the back with motel rooms. Like I said, I was there for a lil' drink. There's a bar inside the mansion (Apothecary Bar) with all kinds of medical and druggist paraphernalia, with the space being a tribute to Dr. Philip Maxwell. But it's the speakeasy, which is accessible outside in the front of the house, that you'll want to visit. Ask for the password inside the mansion, and they will let you into a dark, below-ground bar. It's all decorated in prohibitionist flyers, and even the bartenders are dressed up in period costumes. It's a really cool and unique bar in Lake Geneva.

Focusing the review on the apothecary bar. You need to know the password to get in the speakeasy. A few days after we visited the speakeasy, we went in to try the apothecary bar to get some food and drink. A friendly helpful bartender, explained all their creative cocktails, shared the pub food that they offered, and answered questions. We ordered a flatbread pizza and a spinach artichoke dip as well as a couple of cocktails. They served us at a table where we sat on a couch in a room just across the hall and were quite comfortable. There are other rooms where you can go - not much seating in the actual apothecary bar.
