We were less impressed by the Lego kits on display but totally blown away by the environments surrounding them and the BrickTown build itself. The attention to detail is amazing and there's so much clever humor on display throughout. We visited during the holidays and got to see the winter village and the Star Wars themed Hoth Christmas display - SO cool. Huge highlight from our trip to Roswell.

You could do a historic space flight from the point of the aliens in '47 or the moon landing in '69; but we just did BrickTown. MacKenzie did a fantastic job of explaining our options. We sat in a room to watch an instructional video, and we were let loose to view the exhibit. Also, available are various skill levels of scavenger hunts that will make the exhibit viewing way more involved and enjoyable. Of course you can skip the scanveger, but it will make the museum a little tedious. The first room you'll see various aircraft, but the Roswell Air Show scene has a lot, aliens included, of course. The room leads into another with the halls lined with incredible LEGO Dot interpretations of the Mona Lisa Starry Night, and the Last Supper. You will then see a Pirates Cove scene and various famous buildings. I thought this 1-meter Titanic rendition was pretty good...even with the iceberg ahead. The coup de grace, is actually the interconnected scenes in the main gallery. Everything else gets lost here. You have an amusement park scene, connected to an apartment scene, connected to a park that is getting overrun by an alien attack - led by the biggest alien mother ship on the planet? The mother ship is blasting a huge laser downward and splits a camper can. There are moments of humor here as in the midst of their attack there aliens are assimilating to the activities. Towards the back you will see a Star Wars themed Xmas scene. Also, there is another bigger City themed Xmas display of events. I don't think this scene is permanent, but seasonal. If you love LEGOs you may want to drop in.

The life-sized sculptures are part of the History in Bronze collection and can be viewed by vehicle or foot along the Artesia Mural Trail. In particular, The Derrick Floor represents the discovery of oil and other fossil fuels. My dad was a long-time oilfield mechanic, so this depiction, the plaques, and the very deliberate design all hit home for me. This is very dangerous, yet, rewarding work. Here is a link to Artesia MainStreet Arts & Cultural District: https://www.artesiamainstreet.com/acd Thank you, Artesia and your many supporters and partnerships, for preserving and displaying this history. #grateful #BlackGold #TheDerrickFloor

The first, "Partners" depicts oilmen Mack Chase and Johnny Gray leaning on the hood of a ickup truck. The two local men went into the oil and gas business in 1972, and for 20 years ran a successful company making most of their business deals this way: no lawyers, and just a sun-baked truck hood desk. The second is "Woman's Intuition" and depicts Mary Yates sitting on a spool of cable, pointing to a spot on the ground. Her husband had drilled two dry wells, and the Yates' hired geologist refused to pick another. So Mary chose a spot and said, "Drill there." Her husband did, and struck oil on April 9, 1924, ushering in the Artesia oil boom. The third sculpture, "Derrick Floor," is a full-size 37-foot-high drilling rig created by artist Vic Payne. According to its plaque, the sculpture is meant to ennoble the workers "who take the risks and do the work to find, produce, and refine New Mexico oil and gas." Street parking is available and after you've checked out the sculptures, check out the rest of Artesia! [Review 17440 overall - 53 in New Mexico - 958 of 2022.]

It is located across the street from the Chaves County Courthouse. The sign with the sculpture reads, "John Simpson Chisum. 1824-1884. "Cattle King of the Pecos"" "John S. Chisum, a western icon, is generally recognized as the early West's most prominent cattleman." "In the mid-1870s, Chisum was the largest cattle producer in the nation, with as many as 80,000 longhorn steers in his herd. Beginning as a youthful cattle owner in eastern Texas, he soon became recognized as a "cattle baron" increasing his herd and influence as he moved west." "In 1867, he brought his first herd to New Mexico Territory on the Goodnight-Loving Trail, later partnering with Goodnight for several years. He established headquarters on the Pecos River at Bosque Grande between Fort Sumner and Roswell, claiming a range from Fort Sumner south 150 miles to Seven Rivers, near present-day Carlsbad. In 1875, he moved his headquarters to South Springs at the southern edge of Roswell village." "In spite of Indian raids, rustling gangs, drought and occasional floods, Chisum's holdings prospered. It is said that during the 12 years of his greatest activity, he moved more than 300,00 beeves to markets north and east and to Indian reservations throughout the region." "He was a fringe participant in the Lincoln County War and associate and close friend to John Tunstall, the first casualty in the conflict and Alex McSween, one of the last." "He first befriended Billy the Kid, then together with Roswell's J.C. Lea, selected Pat Garrett to rid the area of the Kid." "One of the West's consummate cattlemen, he helped develop both modern cattle breeds and the fledgling town of Roswell." There is a parking lot here for the Roswell Visitor's Center if you'd like to check out this impressive statue. [Review 17449 overall - 62 in New Mexico - 967 of 2022.]
