This is one of my favourite bars in Cork City. The pub itself is so beautiful and traditional plus the selection of beverages is second to none. If you are in Cork to try out the local craft beers this is the place to go, with a huge draft selection of The Rising Sons Brewery's masterpieces and a big spirits collection. This is Cork City's oldest pub and it's present day interior really gives respect to the tradition. The beautiful ornaments and candlelit tables makes it so serene for a quiet pint. Small, dark & cosy I think may be best description of this local institution! Got a spot at the bar and ordered a Guinness from a very nice gorgeous girl from California, what a surprise. Packed with folks for Christmas and the place is not that big so good luck finding a seat! Again service was great and they even gave me some nice recos for other joints in the area.. A must-visit if staying in Cork for any length of time (5/5 green stars also) We stayed in Cork for two nights and visited the Mutton Lane Inn on both nights - it's that good. The first night was Monday and yet the place was busy - not so crowded that we couldn't find a seat but vibrant enough to make me doubt that it was indeed a Monday. I can narrow down the reasons for visiting to three things: * The atmosphere. A historical pub, but one that attracts people of all ages because of its ultra-cozy candle-lit interior and very welcoming and friendly staff. Also, the mural is reason enough to walk down the lane. * The beer. Besides the usual, they stock beer from Rising Sons microbrewery. The Mi Daza stout was one of the best stouts I've ever had and the Grainú wheat ale was also very good. (Mi Daza means great or wonderful in local slang, in case you're wondering.) They also make good mixed drinks. * The music. The music selection was really good - kind of like listening to the Paul McLoone or Tom Dunne radio shows. I'm also giving them 5/5 "green stars" for social and environmental impact. It's hard to rate pubs for social and environmental impact but I think it's possible. Here are my reasons for this rating: * Beer from local brewers (like Franciscan Well) and microbreweries (like Rising Sons) cuts down on the carbon footprint and supports the local economy. * Rising Sons use local ingredients whenever possible (see article in TheTaste for more details). * They let you bring in food from outside - this allows better inclusion of people with specific diets - gluten free, vegan, vegetarian, etc. * The staff and atmosphere appears to be very welcoming to all who wander in. An important thing in this day and age. * The mural adds the value of art. You may think it's stretching things a bit to include this under social/environmental impact, but I'd take a mural over a large TV screen any day. If I could give a place up to a billion stars, then this would be a one billion star review. The Mutton Lane Inn is perhaps the perfect bar. I know that sounds hyperbolic, but I swear to JFK it's not. Here's why: 1) it's a dive bar that's about as old as THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Here in the states we think a dive bar is old and cool when it's been around since the 70s. Try the 1770s, nerds. 2) it's dark and candle-lit and full of locals, and if you're not a social maladroit you can make friends and meet people and tell stories - ya know, the things you're supposed to do at a bar. There's no tv inside so if you're trying to watch tv by yourself at a bar, go to Applebee's or something because that's not what you do here. 3) you can bring in food from the English Market, which is essentially attached, and the bartenders will make you a coffee to go with your sandwich, or your Beamish, or both. I did both. 4) there's loads of original charm throughout this place, and even a vintage portrait of JFK over the bar because he's apparently the god of Ireland. I didn't really get it either but just go with it. 5) if you want to smoke (or watch rugby or something), there's an alleyway attached where you can sit on old whisky barrels and have your drink and watch the only tv they have, and it's just indescribably charming and grand out there. There's a mural of Cork related stuff, and locals hanging around, and sometimes really nice dogs. People who complain about it being smoky probably shouldn't go to dive bars, or Ireland for that matter. 6) the walls have old framed concert posters and the bathrooms are upstairs and the chairs are comfy and if you wanted to find something to complain about maybe you could argue that it's TOO inviting and you get trapped into spending more time having more fun than you wanted to. But you'd also be an idiot for complaining about that so whatever. I literally can't think of a single thing I'd change about this place. The bartenders are nice, the music is great, the patrons are lovely, the drinks are drinky. Although it deserves one billions stars, I'm forced to settle for a five star review, so I'm going with five stars on this one. Don't miss it. read more

Brilliant pub in the heart of Cork. It is all of the gritty, cramped, candlelit amazingness i was looking for in Ireland. I had to ask a bouncer on Oliver Plunkett where Mutton Lane was. It's over by the Burger King. You would walk past it a million times so keep your eyes open. Easy to miss. Atmosphere is on point. Music on the Friday I visited was 80s and nostalgic. They have little bits and bobs all over and even a picture of JFK. Candles everywhere. Real candles. I felt like blowing them out (fear of fire) but I knew it would be a faux pas. Watch out for a the ladies' bathroom. Steps will getcha. My girlfriend ate shit going into the bathroom and she wasn't even drunk. Drinks are VERY reasonable. Cheapest Guinness I had in Cork and I drank a bunch. Please go, it's lovely. read more

I was a bit standoffish about visiting this place because of a review I read about non-locals not being welcome but I was pleasantly surprised how welcoming great they were. I would like to say that this is a nice pub to have a few quite drinks in but I found the 'background music' to be a bit loud. Other than that it is a nice, small, pub where you can have a nice pint of some craft brews or some of the usual crap, heino, Guinness, e.t.c. It is a dark little pub, and you will be confused when you leave and it is still bright outside but the atmosphere, minus the music, is lovely as are the very friendly staff. The bouncer at this pub was blatantly racist and refused to let my friends in based on the color of their skin. They took one look at us and said "not tonight," then turned us away. I will never will return to this pub because they made us feel unwelcome and othered. I encourage you all to do the same. read more

We were drawn here by the reviews. However, this is like walking down a dark alley to another dimension. The atmosphere is dark, smokey (cigarette smokey) and unnerving. You did not get the vibe non-locals were welcome. 2 minutes in we were ready to leave. So we did, and at the very least avoided smelling like an ash tray. read more

In a city where nearly every bar has a fantastic atmosphere that makes you want to linger all day, Mutton Lane is a standout. Dark and candle lit, even in the middle of the day, this a place where you can come to relax over a good pint. The beer selection is similar to other Cork heritage pubs, with Rising Sons heavily promoted. The music is good and they pour a nice pint of stout. If its warm out you can enjoy a drink in the actual Mutton Lane and ponder the mural that decorates the wall across from the pub. read more

My friends are not white and the doormean acknowledged that this was a reason he was not letting them in after one of them asked. Totally not okay and makes me not want to visit or go to this bar. This is an exceptional find in the city full of exceptional pubs. The mood, the music, the drink availability and the local conversation make it a wonderful relaxing place to spend some time. Candle lit, dim, and relaxing I haven't noticed any one that wasn't enjoying their time there. Additionally was able to locate a measure of Plymouths Sloe Gin which I've been looking to sample for quite some time in many bars. This apparently forgotten spirit was exceptional. read more

A small, yet quaint pub with a nice relaxed atmosphere - the mutton lane is a nice spot if you fancy a relaxing few during the day or night. The candle-lit atmosphere gives it a bohemian effect and I find it a nice place to take my girlfriend. The pints are the average town prices and outside, you have have a long lane way (the mutton lane) which has a large artistic mural painted on it depicting scenes from Cork (Hurling, English Market etc..) which is nice to look at. The Toilet is small, but clean and if your a smoker then you will enjoy the smoking area outside. The staff are polite and friendly. Overall, a good pub and one that I like drinking in. I would definitely recommend it. The only problem with this bar is its small size and I often end up standing as there can be a lack of seating due to the small size and large crowd. read more
