I have used them periodically for some years, as a pleasant and geographically convenient venue for a working lunch with colleagues from across the region. I also go there about twice a year for our larger evening meetings upstairs, and on occasion I have had a meal there before the meeting.
Staff are friendly. Food is typical pub food; generally pleasant, and good value, without being special. However there is one glaring omission at lunchtime; like many people I do not necessarily want a full dinner at lunchtime, and would prefer a light lunch (sandwiches, baguette, ciabatta, soup and roll, or whatever), and this they do not do. They are geared exclusively to the full cooked dinner. This is not about cost, since in many places which do offer such options the costs overlap with their cooked meals, but about what type of meal one wants at that time of day.
To my mind their menu is far better suited to an evening meal, for which it is attractive and good value, well in the mainstream but again without being special. However a serious problem arose last night (27 Feb 2019), when I wanted a meal before our meeting, the service was most desperately slow; more than an hour before the main course arrived. If I had been warned at the time of ordering I could at least have taken an informed decision, and perhaps have gone without a meal at that stage and cooked a (seriously late) dinner after I got home, but I was not warned and so I did not have that choice. The consequence is that I was seriously late for the meeting. Not pleased!!!
I cannot comment on whether this extremely slow service was or was not a one-off issue since I have not used them sufficiently at that time of day. There has never been a problem with slow service at lunchtime. read more
