The Moca Store is a souvenir gift shop of MOCA. It's located on the upper street level by the courtyard. They have a plethora of stuff such as art books, post cards, tote bags, stickers, scented candles, trucker caps, etc. Store is spacious, organized and neat. Prices are highly expensive. Staff was nice. Overall, I had a decent time exploring the store. read more

This place is nice but these prices are outrageous for what some things are and the quality. Not everything though, I would pay $120 for a hand crafted ceramic mug that looked absolutely gorgeous but I wouldn't pay $50 for a cheap quality fanny pack. First off, any museum gift store that lets you in without having to pay museum admission is all right by me. So that's a mark in its favor. But when you add in a helpful staff, really cool merchandise (a poster of Andy Warhol with a skull....hello!) and some not-too-expensive trinkets, you've got me, babe. There are lots and lots of art books of the modern ilk, so if you're looking to update your pad to look hip and cultured, or giving a gift to impress, this is the place for you. Then there's the kid's section, the super expensive jewelry section, and the greeting card section. Not to mention the "real art for not rich people" section (I almost splurged on a $200 neon sculpture.) Support art and shop here for all your modern art needs. read more

Awsome bookstore with great books of art, however, with the rude woman that works here, it's a turn off coming here. I received the evil eye with the eyeglasses nodded down and a harsh warning from the woman who works here not to take photos of book covers. Anyways, even with her watchful eye, I was able to sneak one in. No signs, no posted rules. I did buy some Obey (Shepard Fairey) items that are harder to find, but would of bought more if someone was just a little nicer. I've shopped at the Moca Store a few times while visiting the museum (although you can go to the store without paying for admission since it's inside a separate building, so that's cool). They have fun, original, unique merchandise, so this cute store helped me to choose cool gifts for people who are harder to please and shop for. Yes, it's not cheap to shop here, but it's fun, they have cool books, DVD-s, wonderful souvenirs, fun shirts with funky designs on (I got a few and they were a hit). MOCA is currently teetering on the brink of financial ruin. Their investment portfolio took a significant hit (no surprises here), they've exhausted their budget and donor revenues have deteriorated. They temporarily closed the Geffen Contemporary (where the Murakami exhibit was) in an attempt to cut operating costs, and their endowment has allegedly dwindled down from $40M to $7M. Rumor has it that board was looking to sell off some of the collection in an effort to keep the museum afloat. So how do you save a world renowned contemporary art museum from the threat of eminent financial peril? You have a bake sale of course! And that's just what a group of industrious, concerned supporters decided to do today in front of the museum. Complete with cupcakes, pies, cakes and cookies, they were selling all items for $1.00. Gold bar financiers were going for a paltry $1million! Chump change. Where's Eli Broad and his $30mil bailout? I opted to pledge my support to the MOCA store. Here they have an incredible collection of books, magazines, cards, and gift items. For a unique gift, I suggest coming here, it's great for the holidays! I fell in love with some hand blown bud vases and picked up a few for my staff. Eli Broad recently gave an interview about the importance of MOCA, Art and its ability to transport us from the harsh realities of the current economy. I think Broad is onto something here. I really wish he would step in with an investment while cleaning house in the board of trustees. It would be a shame to let this flagship cultural institution slip into obscurity. L.A.'s burgeoning Art scene simply cannot afford this kind of blow. read more

Cute store. Fabulous book selection. Quirky souvenirs and gifts. Practical art tools. Journals, postcards, pens, watches and mugs. Customer service = non-existent. I mean there were workers in there, but who were they? Maybe they blended in with shoppers. I wanted to buy a memento, but I didn't want a coffee mug or some colored pencils. I was looking for something that had MOCA engraved or stamped on it, but there wasn't anything. Did I miss it? I don't know. It was kind of hot in there, so I didn't want to linger too long. The shelves and tables are adorned with colorful and vibrant objects. It's just too bad (that during my in-store visit) they didn't have associates spritzing the store with lively guest service to match their general merchandise. Had that element been present, I would have spent my money here. read more

A great variety of merchandise including t-shirts to any coffee table books you can imagine. It is so good, this store could stand alone without the museum. Whether you need something touristy like postcards or a poster to put on your wall, you can get it here. I love their wide variety of art magazines, including Giant Robot and Juxapoz. The books area is a little too hard to navigate. It seems really difficult to find what is good on the wall. Included is a lot of Murakami merchandise like pillows and plushes, probably from when his exhibit was at the Geffen. But the selection of t-shirts is very nice indeed. You can also get DVDs, toys, and a lot of other little trinkets. Like you would expect from a museum gift shop, it is pricey and sometimes random. But this is a great museum gift shop. You can easily just come here without even visiting the museum itself. And the clerk even offered me to take those noisy kids in there with me. read more

So after having our museum visit cut short. We decided to peruse the gift store, but this time I asked if I could bring Lola in. Yeah it wasn't a problem. What a relief. So We found the book that talked about the exhibit downstairs and listed and detailed it with photos and text. Perfect we can finish the tour at home with this book. Pretty reasonable at $50 bucks. As I am paying I notice that the sales girl is putting it in a regular paper bag. The book is pretty sizable and heavy so I asked if I could have it in a shopping bag with handles. OMFG You would think I was asking for her first born and all the money in the resister. She huffed and puffed and was bitching about how they didn't have too many bags left and on and on..... like it was my problem. Bitch Please! I am spending $50 bucks on this book and another $15+ on another - you can spare the damn 5 cent shopping bag and not make it the customers' problem! read more

If you need a gift for the friend who's got everything, this is a great store for those artsy fartsy types. All sorts of tchotchkes ranging from purposes of merely eye candy to clever and useful. Eclectic, modern, and quirky products - there's gotta be something here for everyone. The parking situation here sucks because the museum parking is $9 with museum validation. There is metered street parking in front but it is very limited, so it's only realistic to shop at the Moca store if you're also visiting the museum. It flatters the recipient of your gift. 2. It makes YOU look far smarter and erudite than the "last-minute- can not- figure-out what- to get- this person" shopper that you really are! This has to be one of my favorite places to buy presents for house-warmings and co-workers that I know well enough to know that they love design, but not well enough to truly know who their favorite author or artist is. Totally flippin awesome. You must check out this store. Bigger than the Geffen's, it's got everything from art books to kid's stuff to stuffed animals, to books on depressed apathetic artist teens to stick drawings on why the world sucks to little organizer bags you can store your weed in to ceramic eggs you crack open and little plants like basil, strawberry, and lavender come out. It's a total "OMFG KEWL" moment. read more

The store at MOCA is one of the most well-curated museum shops I've seen in my day (and I've seen many). The balance of books and gift items is perfect. The books on offer include plenty of mainstream contemporary art titles as well as rare and foreign selections. As far as gift items go, the selections are interesting and true to MOCA's mission, from an Ed Ruscha-designed towel to unique jewelry and interesting cards. I didn't encounter any of the customer service problems that others have mentioned here, and I did notice a sign near the entrance stating that photography was not allowed. As someone who works in the publishing industry, I sort of understand this rule, as it would otherwise be easy for a customer to photograph a book and then purchase it elsewhere (cough, Amazon). Support the arts by supporting this store -- and remember, as with many of the best museum stores in the country, members get a discount on their purchases. This is yet another reason to patronize one of the most interesting cultural institutions in Los Angeles. read more

This store has everything to satisfy one's artsy fartsy needs and tendencies. After a trip through the Moca I always come to the Moca store to check out what goodies they have. For any shows they will have postcards, books, posters, so if one of your favorite artists is up then you'll be able to score some neat stuff. Last time during the Rauschenbug show they had limited edition posters available to purchase. Currently there are Skin and Bones exhibit tote bags and postcards with illustrations by the famous fashion illustrator Ruben Toledo. They also have tons of beautiful, smart stuff to decorate your home, accesories, toys, books, magazines. It's a lot of fun to look through, even if you don't walk out with anything. I used to be a fan of the enamel rings that they keep at the cashier counter. Sometimes there are book signings here. The featured book displays change depending on the current museum exhibition. The Hammer has a better children's section but the MOCA store carries my art magazines and red Moleskines. This is a good source for postcards or unusual gifts. read more

As museum gift shops go, this one is fairly inspired. Fun stuff at all price levels, with merchandise you don't see at every other boutique. As an aside, I also like the little Cafe at MOCA -- reasonable selection of sandwiches, sweets, sodas, wine, beer. Despite what some reviewers have experienced, we found the MOCA folks to be extremely helpful and friendly, perhaps because we're from Denver and enter with our Mod/Co card, which piques their interest. Do you ever need a present that says "I love you and I know where to buy the best stuff in LA" or "I am more cultured than you, let me show you the way" or maybe "this is so cool, I have no idea what it means", this is that gift shop. I recently stopped in even before hitting the museum to peruse the supplies and found a $300 sweatshirt I totally wanted and a pencil I needed. I ended up walking away with only three posters but thats the magic of this shop. Everything is adorable and every screams art & LA, there are no better presents than these. read more

Giving 5 stars for amazing customer service. Was unable to attend a book signing event, so I called the MOCA store to see what my chances would be of them having a copy signed for me. Spoke with Bennett the day of the event, and explained my situation. She was very kind and accommodating over the phone. Took my personal contact info, and called me the following morning to confirm that she had the book on hold for me to come pick up. Haven't received kind attention to detail service like this in Los Angeles in quite some time. Very impressed, and I look forward to returning on my next visit to the museum. my review is based solely on customer service and not on the merchandise.. my bf and i had a pleasant visit yesterday at the museum then we decided to stop by the store to check it out. upon entering, we didn't feel wanted at all. the employees could afford to wipe the scowls from their faces. we went to the books section at the left corner in the front of the store and a book behind us fell down. I was polite enough to bend down and pick it up and as i was trying to figure out where it came from the female associate came over and yanked the book out of my and and said very rudely, "I'LL TAKE CARE OF IT." ok so she must've thought I dropped it but even if i did is it not her job to ensure everything's placed correctly? anyway we browsed around some more, the male associate had his eyes on us all the while and made me very uncomfortable. i attempted to take a picture of my bf with an Obey hat and the same lady coldly chastised me and said they don't allow photography in their store. really? i could have sworn i missed the sign. but anyway, we ended up not buying anything and maybe we would have if we felt welcomed. if they're so unhappy working there then just fucking quit! seriously don't go in the store unless you're white or old. i would have said something but there were seniors and children in the store so i didnt want to make a scene. read more
