A bugbear of mine, and this establishment covered it, sign on the door 'shirts to be worn and shoes inside'. Brilliant. Immediately I was pleased that the staff seemed to be very happy and smiling. Service, throughout the few hours we were there, was perfect, quick, professional but very friendly. We ordered the seafood platter and were not disappointed. Wonderful fresh seafood, fab dressed crab and my favourite, oysters. This is where I gain, my partner hates oysters. All went down too well with a pint, or two. So well that I ordered a further three oysters. They were so good and fresh. A wonderful few hours and thank you guys and gals, you are brilliant. OK, one tiny question. Whitstable is up the road so why Maldon oysters? Not complaining but we live 8 miles from Maldon.

Great choice - nicely presented food…read more We were looking for a nice place for lunch. Most pubs don't serve food and the ones who did, didn't allow our dog. Then we walked past this place. Looked good, tables outside with views, interesting menu. Looked very nice inside too. But having our dog we took a seat outside....nice and sunny anyway. Service was very nice and helpful, offered some water for our doggy. There are several good items on the menu. Some british classic with a twist. We ordered some Scotch Eggs and Pork Pie w/ chutney and also some roasted pork cracklings. Beer, Cider and others drinks with that. We were positively surprised by the very stylish presentation of the food, especially given the very fair prices. And it didn't only looked good, it tasted good as well. Scotch Eggs were done perfectly, cooked outside and still semi-cooked egg-yolk. Good slices of Pork Pie and perfectly crunchy Pork Crackling (a steal for 1.95£). A really good lunch with nice views. So good, we came back for dinner. Then we had the salmon with potatoes and sides and Bangers & Mash. Fish was fresh and good sized. Bangers were of really good quality, not the regular store-bought bangers. Good mash too. Some Cider and beer with. We really had a good time here and two very good meals. Of all the dining options this one is a really good choice with an interesting menu. Would come back.

Philip and I chose the venison dish but, as he doesn't like mushrooms, they were happy to change them for fennel instead. The meat was succulent and the sauce absolutely delicious no danger of calling it 'gravy'! Judi chose a smoked haddock dish which she pronounced to be superb. The wine list was a bit confusing as their affordable bottles are found on the 'by the glass' page. We chose a splendid Malbec from Argentina whilst Judi had a zingy white which she clearly enjoyed as she finished the whole bottle by herself. I can't remember what it was, however :-( Then came the crowning glory(s). We each chose a different pudding and we each declared our choice to be the best pudding we had ever had! I had the clementine parfait, Judi the roasted black figs and Philip the clafouti. The Maury Grenat Grenache Noir topped it off perfectly. They were very busy (as they should be!) and if the service was fairly slow the food was not 'fast' and that's fine by me!

Absolutely appalling behaviour - RACISM and ASSAULT by a member of staff…read more I had a shocking experience at The Cuban in Canterbury that I feel needs to be shared. My friend and I were standing near the windowsill inside with our handbags next to us when a tall African bouncer approached us aggressively. He began waving his finger in our faces and acted confrontational without any clear explanation--apparently just because our bags were resting on the windowsill. What made this worse was that he targeted my friend, who is Black Caribbean, with clear and disturbing racial bias. It was painfully obvious that this man--despite being Black himself--was prejudiced and aggressive toward us, especially her. I spoke to the head bouncer who confirmed there was no issue as long as we were standing next to our bags. We returned to where we were, but the same bouncer came back, told us to get out with no explanation, and when I asked why, he refused to answer. I began recording for my own protection, and he snatched my phone, was physically aggressive, and later threw my drink all over me and broke my phone strap. This was a clear assault, and I have reported the incident to the police. Another bouncer just said, "we don't need to give you a reason--he's worked here for seven years," which is absolutely unacceptable. This was not just poor treatment--it was racially motivated, physically aggressive, and deeply unprofessional. The Cuban seriously needs to review who they employ and how they deal with incidents like this. I will never return and strongly advise others--especially people of colour--to be cautious before going there.
