We wanted seafood, well we were by the sea. Coming across this 'pub' and its menu outside, we decided a visit was on the cards. A bugbear of mine, and this establishment covered it, sign on the door 'shirts to be worn and shoes inside'. Brilliant. Immediately I was pleased that the staff seemed to be very happy and smiling. Service, throughout the few hours we were there, was perfect, quick, professional but very friendly. We ordered the seafood platter and were not disappointed. Wonderful fresh seafood, fab dressed crab and my favourite, oysters. This is where I gain, my partner hates oysters. All went down too well with a pint, or two. So well that I ordered a further three oysters. They were so good and fresh. A wonderful few hours and thank you guys and gals, you are brilliant. OK, one tiny question. Whitstable is up the road so why Maldon oysters? Not complaining but we live 8 miles from Maldon. read more

Great choice - nicely presented food We were looking for a nice place for lunch. Most pubs don't serve food and the ones who did, didn't allow our dog. Then we walked past this place. Looked good, tables outside with views, interesting menu. Looked very nice inside too. But having our dog we took a seat outside....nice and sunny anyway. Service was very nice and helpful, offered some water for our doggy. There are several good items on the menu. Some british classic with a twist. We ordered some Scotch Eggs and Pork Pie w/ chutney and also some roasted pork cracklings. Beer, Cider and others drinks with that. We were positively surprised by the very stylish presentation of the food, especially given the very fair prices. And it didn't only looked good, it tasted good as well. Scotch Eggs were done perfectly, cooked outside and still semi-cooked egg-yolk. Good slices of Pork Pie and perfectly crunchy Pork Crackling (a steal for 1.95£). A really good lunch with nice views. So good, we came back for dinner. Then we had the salmon with potatoes and sides and Bangers & Mash. Fish was fresh and good sized. Bangers were of really good quality, not the regular store-bought bangers. Good mash too. Some Cider and beer with. We really had a good time here and two very good meals. Of all the dining options this one is a really good choice with an interesting menu. Would come back. read more

Not as cool as I thought it would be. It had no character and was larger than your typical pub. Britney Spears 'Womanizer' was blasting and kids were running around the place shouting. If I didn't know any better I would have thought I was in Applebee's. In a town where Dickens lived and wrote some of his famous works, you'd think a pub named after him may have SOMETHING pertaining to the man...a bit of history of some sort...but nope, it doesn't. The menu was pretty extensive for a pub and there were a lot of vegetarian options and pretty good specials. Drinks were a little on the pricey side. But, if you're just looking to relax and watch the people on the beach, this is a nice place to be. read more

The Charles Dickens has been recently refurbished under new ownership and the final product is excellent. A long bar and divided seating area gives a spacious impression whilst allowing for some privacy. There is a good variety of drink and the music is pleasant and non obtrusive. Seemed to appeal to a younger crowd but all ages were evident and welcome on a Sunday night. Food quality unknown but menu seemed slightly pricy. read more

A wonderful place to eat, with great sea views, especially if you dine upstairs. The food is always of a high standard, and exceptional value for money. Children are welcome in the pub until early evening. There is a games room with a pool table and some basic toys for children. read more

Went last Monday for lunch with my daughter and my mother for her 83rd birthday. We were going to sit upstairs in the window, fantastic view. Unfortunately the place is absolutely filthy. The window cills look like they have never been wiped, thick mucky dust, the paper table cloth was covered in stains and marks and the chair upholstery on all four chairs at the table were covered in food stains. If that is the state of the public area what on earth is it like in the kitchen? There are also springs and ripped upholstery on the bench seating too. We didn't stay to eat, truly appalling and very disappointing. Won't be going back and I would not recommend it. Also on the way back downstairs the bannister rail is all sticky, shudder!!! We were here, last Sunday 6th of Feb. We sat upstairs, there was a lovely ambience. I had the slow cooked roast of belly of pork it was delicious. The roast potatoes were nice & crispy. served with red cabbage & another 3 more veg. The only very slight problem I had, was the apple sauce Though it was nice, a little too sweet for me, it needed a slight sharpness to it. The sweetness, I don't like a personal choice, as I do a little sugar . I give it 9 3/4 out of 10. I did mention it to the member of staff. My husband had the ham egg & chips which he enjoyed. The food in this family friendly pub is traditional pub food of a very high standard and the sea views are amazing. The staff are very friendly too! In my opinion this pub is in a fab location and one of the best around this area. read more
