We mainly went to watch the otters (Mac & Tuck) and stayed for their feeding time at noon. The staff did a short talk while they ate fish and played. There were some beautiful carved decoys - many with "best in the world" blue ribbons. They had a scavenger hunt with a sticker reward for finding all the things on the clipboard. Some beautiful murals, lots of old photos of the area and boats; and a gift shop with great books, toys, jewelry, and gifts. I got my Mom a hand carved humming bird by a local artist.

We tried opening one door to a random building, but it was locked and we don't even know if that was a building that we were supposed to go to. We stood outside, taking photos as we did not want to interrupt any businesses or homes nearby. Great history. There is a volunteer on each of the 2 floors and a short video about the 1980's retrieval of a shipwreck from the late 18th century not far off the coast. Donations and comments are appreciated. Come check it out, and also visit the lovely park behind the Museum.

I will say that there is a vertigo tunnel, but if I remember correctly there *should* be an alternative walkthrough into the next section for those with light sensitivity, epilepsy, vertigo, etc. Definitely address your concerns with the staff if need be. Overall, this is absolutely something fun to do with your group (or even by yourself) at any age, and is even quite informative!

It was absolutely one of my favorite things about my trip to Chincoteague. This museum did all the things I think a great museum should do - invoke an emotional connection, educate and spark a curiosity to learn more. I was looking forward to visiting Misty in all of her taxidermy glory but she was just one of many heart-warming exhibits. Other than Misty, some of my favorite artifacts were the oyster plates, the toll calculator machine, a model of the steamer Chincoteague and the old mail sorting desk. I enjoyed the stories about the Chincoteague citizens too like Kirk Mariner, a local minister, historian and writer and Miles Hancock, a master decoy carver. Something that brought a smile to my face was the video or the citizens giving their first hand account of the 1962 Ash Wednesday storm. I'm so glad someone took the time to record those stories about the devastating storm. The people feature in the video are very endearing. There is much to learn at this museum like how chicken farming got its start and how seafood has played a major part in the economy. I didn't know much about the legacy of Misty so it was sweet to read more about the goals that followed her lineage. At $4 for an adult, I felt like this was a terrific way to spend and hour or so.

There were a lot of flies when we visited, and they were definitely noticeable while walking the trails. Overall, a clean, peaceful stop with helpful staff and a great way to learn more about Assateague Island before exploring.

This Visitor Center was a delight! They have aquariums with live sea life like shrimp, fish, and…read morecrabs, and they even have a touch tank with animals you can touch during certain programs. There's a junior ranger program your kiddos can participate in to earn a badge. And you can find out the programs being offered that day, which are quite plentiful. The day I visited, the programs included crabbing, clamming, searching for sea life, touch tank, and even kayaking (for a fee). I've been to my share of national parks but this was unique in the breadth of awesome programs they offer. (My kids had a blast at the FREE crabbing program - the rangers put chicken neck on a line and then you use it to lure the crabs up.)
