Beachside open air option at the lovely Buccaneer. Had one dinner here and our last lunch before ending our vacation. Tile floors and plastic chairs probably better suited to lunch than an expensive dinner. Lots of nice options on menus. Jerk chicken wings were awesome. During our recent stay at The Buccaneer Hotel (resort), we dined here twice. The first time was the first evening after we checked in and the second was 2 nights later. On both nights, the ambience and food were good. The first night, I had the hamburger ("Build Your Own "Prime" Burger") cooked medium rare with parmesan fries and the second night I opted for the beef tenderloin with a risotto and asparagus. Serving size was more than adequate and everything tasted good. The parmesan fries could have had more "pow" to it from the seasoning, but it was cooked well and generously portioned. My son and wife also had good things to say about their food. Since the weather was nice the entire time we were here, the open feel of the restaurant and the fresh air that wafts through is really nice. The décor is not fancy, but it is neat, airy, and attractive. Seating is nicely spaced out, especially during these times when additional caution is exercised during COVID. The staff were friendly on both nights but if there was one complaint it's that service/food took forever on the first night. It took us more than an hour to get our food and there was no explanation offered as to why. At the end of the meal, after settling our bill, I nicely asked our server if that was typical, but she said that evening was an exception, and she wasn't sure why. I have to say that the second night, it was noticeably faster. On Mondays ("Grill Night"), they had fire dancers performing just outside the restaurant so those who were seated on the beach side got a great view of the entertainment. During Grill Night, the menu is prix fixe. The Mermaid is also open for lunch, but we never stopped by since we were usually out and about on the island. We opted to walk over from our ocean front room but there is adjacent parking available should you opt to drive over. All in all, we were pleased with The Mermaid, especially since it was on premises and easy to get to after a long day out or at the beach/pool - which we always were. Notes: 1. Like many places in St. Croix, dinner reservations are STRONGLY recommended if not necessary. Otherwise, you may be left feeling disappointed (and hungry). I do believe they say that dinner reservations are required here though. You can also order food to go, if needed/desired. 2. The Mermaid was the only restaurant on premises to be open for dinner now, so reservations are that much more important until they reopen other dining options. read more

For a resort restaurant I was very disappointed in the food here. Service was borderline acceptable. I had the roast chicken which was overcooked and dry. There were four pieces of asparagus on my plate, two were overcooked and two were undercooked. My mashed potatoes were dry. My wife had a Caesar salad with a grilled piece of mahi over the top. The mahi was unseasoned, no salt or pepper, and was very bland. There was also barely any Caesar dressing on the salad. The three other people in our party ordered mahi as well, and all three of their pieces were overcooked from what they ordered. It's a decent fine dining restaurant inside the buccaneer hotel resort. During our stay, we had dinner here twice and ordered room service from here. Most of the dishes are executed at the typical fine dining standard with nice presentation. We tended to order seafood dishes sourced local and their local fish/shrimps/clams were fresh. The only disappointment was that they didn't use local lobsters for their lobster entree on their seafood night (in my opinion). The lobster served to us looked the same as cold water lobsters from Maine, not the larger tropical lobster we had in a nearby fine dining restaurant. COVID measures are followed as of summer 2021 but service and kitchen is quite slow possibly due to COVID impact. Pricing is a bit high but not too bad. Convenient choice for those who stay in the hotel. However, you can find better fine dinning places nearby at the same price range. Pro tips: Reservation strongly recommended (the same for any fine dining restaurants on the island). Skip lobster dishes if you want large tropical lobsters (at least during COVID). read more

What a PHENOMENAL day at the beach. The Mermaid is the place to be to enjoy the sun, beach, drinks, and food. Don't be intimidated. Go to the Buccaneer Golf Resort and enter through the guard shack. Tell them your name and your there for the Mermaid and they will guide you right in. Get your food on. Get your drink on. And get your beach on! Thank you for the great service and food! View is beautiful! Restaurant is clean and decorated nicely. Our waitress was nice but seemed confused when we ordered . I originally ordered the chicken sandwich and fruit but returned it bc the chicken was very thin and small and it had no taste. A nice spot on the water and part of The Buccaneer Resort. Great cocktails, with a much wider choice of blended tropical drinks than the other bars on the property. It was a bit understaffed while I was there, so there was a considerable wait for service yet it was courteous and friendly. Lots of biting insects, so I recommend taking their advice and giving yourself a good coating of Off! or other repellent. read more

We stayed at the Buccaneer which was nice overall but we got there earlier in the day, made reservations figuring we would just stay on the resort for dinner after a long day of travel. Boy did we regret it. We waited over an hour for food to show up while watching several other tables who arrived after us get their food. Food finally arrived and the jerk chicken I got was the worst meal I've ever had. Completely dry and zero flavor. To the point of what little meat was on them stabbed my cheeks. About six tiny little wings that were horrible. The fries were ok but I was far too hungry and tired and didn't want to wait another hour of if I sent them back. My families meals were just mediocre. Now I understand there is an island life speed to some things but this was not that. It was also the single most expensive meal we had there and bar far the worst. The Burger Shack down the rapid is a far better choice. Breakfast at the Buccaneer terrace was fantastic though. read more

Pretentious doesn't mean tasty. It's a beautiful space and the fire show was a nice touch. However, I go to a restaurant for the food, and for the $40+/person price point, this is forgettable at best. We both got Mahi Mahi with varied sides. The fish was very much over cooked, the mushy risotto was cold, even after a redo, and the baked potato was clearly "baked" by Chef Mic(rowave). Even the burre blanc sauce was cold! There are so many better places for much less money. The two stars are for the show and the very kind and hospitable wait staff. Hard pass! read more

Beautiful spot with a picture perfect beach. Hotel guests have nice amenities from paddle boarding to corn hole to volleyball. Food was good. We got the Cuban sliders. Great flavors. This restaurant was good with very fresh ingredients. We shared the vegetarian flatbread which had tomatoes, asparagus, cheese, and pesto on top. We also ordered the Caribbean chicken salad which had shaved coconut on top and a refreshing tropical vinaigrette. Plus, the location is ideal being on the beach at the Buccaneer Hotel. The mermaid, small restaurant right off the best beach at the Buccaneer Hotel and serves everything from salads to large dinner main courses. You can only access the Mermaid by entering through the security gate for the Resort so once you reach the guard just let them know your going to have lunch at the Mermaid. It is convenient because of its proximity to the awesome beach but pricey for lunch. Service is hit or miss most times. Best thing I have had there is the coconut crusted chicken salad. Slow if your in a rush during lunch. If anything I recommend getting some drinks then hitting that beach. read more
