Hey, Yelpers, less of a review, more of a preview. However, I have eaten at The Melville Inn, so…read moreI've put my mouth where my money is. Yes, you'll find the landlord, or manager as they're called these days - Derek - out on the floor, serving customers, just like the rest of his staff. Don't take my word for it though, Carolyn, one of the top team, won the Scotland round of the in-house servers competition, and was silver medalist in the whole UK in 2012 - against 200 other Vintage Inn pubs. What's got me excited though is the October Tarot Evening. It's a first for the venue and, given the low-lighting, log-fire intimate surroundings, it should be a hoot. I'm minded to notch up five stars, because the Melville delivers what you expect, and delivers it well - good, family friendly food; plenty of atmosphere; and just the occasional surprise too. Rate me, rate my rating when you go.

We walked in and once we finally got noticed it was sooo friendly. I picked the lamb koftas to start and the beef and merlot pie. Great service and fast, my koftas came and they were not bad, just a little more dense and just a little more spice for me though. My beef and merlot pie was the exact dish I'd had in the Balloch House a couple of weeks ago, but it seemed to me it was just slightly more lacking in meat, but still with the oversize bits of mushroom, still tasty though and certainly a nice Sunday lunch.

Since we are from California ee got special treatment in song. California Dreaming and one gentleman ad libbed a funny Trump song. Mostly the music was country and blues. Strange to go to Scotland to listen to that. :) The food was great also.

For years, the meals were very ordinary, but the standard has been improving steadily and consistently over several years to the point where we now go there for the food as much as for the company. The menu is based around traditional Scottish ideas - steak and ale pie, haggis-neeps-and-tatties, and the like, but these dishes are well executed and nicely presented. Of late, menus have become a bit more adventurous, and the quality of materials and cooking continues to rise. Given that this pub is part of a chain, I can't see it ever aiming for a Michelin star or even "fine dining" status, but it is way above the typically dire standard of pub food in Scotland and on the very short list of places we are willing to go to for a meal out in south Edinburgh. Cheerful and friendly waiting staff only add to the positive experience. Recommended for a hearty meal.
